Halloween Train Rides in North Carolina (2026)

Tweetsie Railroad runs North Carolina's only coal-fired steam train on Halloween nights, an open-air ride out of Blowing Rock at roughly 3,500 feet, where late-October evenings can drop into the 30s. It is also the one haunted ride in the state this year. Of the five rides with dates left after Oct 14, the other four are gentle: two at the New Hope Valley Railway near Raleigh, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, and a vintage trolley outside Asheville. For other states, start with our guide to Halloween train rides across the country.

The state splits neatly into mountains and Piedmont. The two mountain rides land during leaf season, so expect weekend traffic on US 321 and around Asheville. The Triangle has a full hour of costumed characters in the woods at New Hill and a short museum train tied to a pumpkin patch in Durham. Charlotte families have no Halloween train inside the metro this year; the closest are about two hours away.

One date to know right away: the New Hope Valley Railway's sensory-friendly fall ride, with no actors and warnings before the horn, runs only on Wednesday, Oct 14.

The short version

  • Pumpkin and costume rides: Raleigh families are 30 to 35 minutes from Track or Treat at New Hill; choose a daylight slot (2:15 to 5:15 PM on Saturdays) for toddlers or the 7:45 PM train for kids who want the spookiest version.
  • If today works and your child is sound-sensitive, the Sensory-Friendly Fall Ride runs only on Oct 14 at 10:30 AM and noon.
  • Durham and Greensboro families can do the Pumpkin Patch Express at the Museum of Life and Science as a morning, but book a slot soon, because some times are already gone.
  • From Asheville or Charlotte (about 2 hours), the Hayride on the Rails trolley is the mountain option with no scares; several slots were nearly full on Oct 13.
  • Haunted rides: The Tweetsie Ghost Train is about 2 hours from Charlotte or Greensboro and 3 hr 15 min from Raleigh, with six nights left; the haunted parts are recommended for 8 and up.

Charlotte is the awkward spot: nothing runs in the metro, and the closest options are Tweetsie and the Craggy Mountain Line, each about two hours away.

Look inside the book

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a North Carolina pumpkin train.

Ghosts, a Headless Brakeman and a Very Small Rider: What to Expect

Tweetsie is the only ride here that aims to scare, and the park is clear that the Ghost Train, Haunted House and Freaky Forest are for 8 and up. Reviewers say most of the frights are along the path beside the train rather than on it, and that the first departure of the night can be lighter because it is not fully dark yet. If you bring a younger sibling, Main Street trick-or-treating, the dance party and the blacklight Spooktacular show give them their own fun while an older child rides.

Track or Treat at New Hill sits in the middle. The characters are Count Dracula, witches and pumpkin people, and kids are told to look for the Headless Brakeman, which can be thrilling or too much depending on the child. The daylight trains are the gentlest; the 7:45 PM run is the one the railway calls fully spooky. For a 4-year-old, try telling the Headless Brakeman story at home first as a silly one, so it is a game of spotting him rather than a surprise. The Durham museum train and the Asheville trolley have no scares at all.

From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

Our book has a page where the train rolls into a tunnel and everything goes black. Rally is scared and can't see a thing, until a big bright light shows up and his big ears pick up happy cheers. On Tweetsie's Ghost Train the dark part is the open-air run through the woods, and if an older brother or sister is riding, Rally's tunnel is a nice thing to talk through ahead of time: the dark part ends, and Mom and Dad stay right beside you. Color that tunnel page together from our free Rally printables, and if you want to know who dreamed him up, here is my mom's story.

Blowing Rock: Ghost Train at Tweetsie Railroad

Best for: Ages 8 and upFrom $45About 22 minutesDates left: Oct 16 to Oct 31

Tweetsie's Ghost Train is a whole after-dark theme park night with a steam train at the center. Your ticket is tied to one reserved departure on the open-air, coal-fired steam train, and around it you get the Haunted House, the Freaky Forest, trick-or-treating on Main Street, a dance party, the blacklight Tweetsie Palace Spooktacular show and a set of amusement rides.

Tweetsie recommends the Ghost Train ride, Haunted House and Freaky Forest for ages 8 and older. A 2024 Attractions Magazine review says most of the scares are along the path rather than on the train, and that the first departure of the night can feel lighter because it is not fully dark yet. Trick-or-treating, the dance party and the show are the easier parts for little siblings. Mountain nights get cold and the cars are open-air, rain or shine.

New Hill: Track or Treat Halloween Express on the New Hope Valley Railway

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $18.61Dates left: Oct 17 to Oct 24

The all-volunteer New Hope Valley Railway runs a one-hour, 4-mile round trip from Bonsal to New Hill and back, and for Track or Treat the woods along the line fill with Count Dracula, witches, bubbling cauldrons and pumpkin characters. Kids are told to watch for a ghost train and for the railway's own legend, the Headless Brakeman.

The railway calls it slightly spooky, and the time you pick sets the mood. The 2:15 to 5:15 PM rides are in daylight, the 6:30 PM train heads out at sunset and comes back after dark, and the 7:45 PM train is what the railway calls the full spooky experience. We list it as a costume ride because the characters are friendly and every age is welcome, but book the earliest slot for a hesitant preschooler.

New Hill: Sensory-Friendly Fall Ride on the New Hope Valley Railway

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeDates left: Oct 14

This is the quiet version of Track or Treat, and it runs only on Wednesday, Oct 14, at 10:30 AM and noon. The railyard and the line are still decorated for Halloween, but there is no spooky music and nobody in costume waiting in the woods.

The railway built it around kids who are sensitive to noise. Brakemen give a warning before every horn blast, six child-size ear protectors can be borrowed free (first come, first served), and the operator suggests sitting in the middle cars, boarded from Platforms 2 and 3, to stay farthest from the horn. Prices for this ride are not posted, so check the operator site.

Durham: Pumpkin Patch Express at the Museum of Life and Science

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeFrom $13.50Dates left: Oct 17 to Oct 25

Here the train is the ride home. Families enter the museum's pumpkin patch at a timed slot, pick and decorate one pumpkin per ticketed person, work through a Hay Maze, a scavenger hunt, mini pumpkin putt-putt, duck races and bowling, eat fresh popcorn, then ride the museum's own Ellerbe Creek Railway back to the station. It is a short museum railway, not a long excursion line, and the museum does not state the ride's length.

Budget carefully: every person, adults included, needs both an event ticket and museum admission. Sold-out time slots simply disappear from the booking page, and on Oct 13 the 10:30 AM slot on Sat Oct 17 was down to a single ticket.

Asheville: Hayride on the Rails on the Craggy Mountain Line

Best for: All ages, toddlers welcomeAbout 2 hoursDates left: Oct 17 to Oct 31

Despite the hayride name, this is a vintage open-air trolley running on rails, now in its 10th year. It runs over the last 3.45 miles of Asheville's historic Craggy Mountain line along the French Broad River to Woodfin's Silverline Park, where a third-party listing says there is pumpkin picking from an onsite patch and cider. The railroad has not confirmed that a pumpkin comes with the ticket, so ask.

Slots are booked as two hours, and the 6:00 PM departures finish around dark. Seating is first come, first served. Several slots were close to full on Oct 13, and dollar prices could not be verified, so check the booking page before you plan the day around it.

Mountain Cold Versus Piedmont Mild in a North Carolina October

Elevation changes everything. In the High Country around Blowing Rock, typical nights fall into the 30s and 40s by mid to late October, frost is possible, and wind on an open-air train makes it feel colder. Asheville-area evenings usually sit in the 40s. Down in the Piedmont, Durham and New Hill tend to see afternoons in the 60s to low 70s and evenings in the 40s and 50s. These are typical climate figures, not a forecast.

Sunset is around 6:30 to 6:45 PM in mid October and about 6:20 PM by Oct 31, since Daylight Saving Time ends Nov 1. So the 4:45 PM and earlier New Hill trains are fully in daylight, the 6:30 PM trains cross into dusk, and everything at Tweetsie from 7:00 PM on is in the dark. Every train in this guide runs open-air or with open sides except the Durham museum railway, whose cars are not described. For Tweetsie, pack the winter coat, a hat and gloves that fit with the costume, and a blanket for the car ride home.

How Long the Drive Is From Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro

Small Things That Trip Up North Carolina Halloween Train Days

  • Tweetsie's Ghost Train ticket is separate from daytime park admission, and group rates, discounts and coupons are not honored on Ghost Train nights. Season pass holders get $20 off one ticket.
  • Tweetsie has no assigned seats on the train, so a family or group that wants to sit together should line up early. A 2024 review suggests Car 3 for the best views.
  • New Hope Valley trains leave on time and cannot wait for late arrivals; the railway asks you to arrive 30 minutes early. There are no restrooms on the train, only in the rail yard.
  • Durham's Pumpkin Patch Express needs an event ticket and museum admission for every person, adults included. Date or time changes need 48 hours' notice and cost $5 each, and there are no refunds unless the museum cancels.
  • The Craggy Mountain Line asks you to check in 10 minutes before your slot and will call if you have not checked in 30 minutes before departure. A third-party listing says cancellations made 48 hours ahead get a full refund.
  • The N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer has run a Halloween Train in past years, but it had no 2026 dates posted as of Oct 14. Its Legends by Lantern tours on Oct 30 and 31 are a walking tour, not a train ride, and some times are already sold out.

Pumpkin Trains Just Over the South Carolina and Tennessee Lines

For Charlotte families, the closest pumpkin train is actually in South Carolina: the South Carolina Railroad Museum in Winnsboro, about 1 hr 15 min away, lists a Pumpkin Patch Express on Oct 24 and Oct 31 on its homepage, so check the operator site before you go. In the other direction, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, about 3.5 hours from Asheville, runs a haunted ride called Haints and Haunts on Oct 30, recommended for ages 13 and older; check the operator site for tickets.

If you are traveling farther north this month, our Pennsylvania pumpkin train guide covers a state with a dozen gentle rides and one haunted show.

Halloween Train Questions From North Carolina Parents

What Halloween events are there for kids in Blowing Rock, North Carolina?

One family Halloween event in Blowing Rock is Tweetsie Railroad's Ghost Train, a haunted night event built around an open-air, coal-fired steam train ride. Nights left are Oct 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31, from 7:00 to 10:30 PM. Tickets are $65 for ages 13 and up, $45 for ages 3 to 12, and free for 2 and under. The ride, Haunted House and Freaky Forest are recommended for 8 and older, while trick-or-treating and a blacklight show suit younger kids.

Are there any Halloween events in New Hill, North Carolina this October?

New Hill's Halloween train is Track or Treat on the New Hope Valley Railway, a one-hour costume ride past friendly characters like Count Dracula and witches, with a lookout for the Headless Brakeman. It runs Saturdays Oct 17 and 24 from 2:15 PM and Friday, Oct 23 from 5:15 PM, at about $18.61 a ticket per local listings. The railway's quieter Sensory-Friendly Fall Ride, with no actors and horn warnings, runs only on Wednesday, Oct 14.

What is there to do for Halloween in Durham, North Carolina with kids?

One family Halloween event in Durham is the Pumpkin Patch Express at the Museum of Life and Science, a gentle daytime pumpkin outing on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25. Families enter the patch at a timed slot, pick and decorate a pumpkin, try the Hay Maze and mini pumpkin putt-putt, then ride the museum's train back. Event tickets are $16, or $13.50 after 2:30 PM, on top of museum admission. Some slots were nearly gone as of October 14.

What Halloween events are there for families in Asheville, North Carolina?

One family Halloween event in Asheville is Hayride on the Rails on the Craggy Mountain Line, a gentle open-air vintage trolley ride along the French Broad River to Woodfin's Silverline Park. It runs Oct 17, 22, 24, 29, 30 and 31 at 4:00 or 6:00 PM and takes about two hours. A third-party listing mentions pumpkin picking and cider at the park, which the railroad has not confirmed, and prices could not be verified, so check the operator site.

Is there a pumpkin patch train in Durham, North Carolina?

Yes, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham ties its pumpkin patch to its own Ellerbe Creek Railway. Every ticketed person picks a pumpkin to decorate, and the visit ends with a short train ride from the patch back to the station. Timed entry runs from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25. The museum has not posted how long the ride lasts, so check the operator site.

What are Halloween events for kids near Charlotte, North Carolina?

We found no Halloween train inside the Charlotte metro this year, but two run about two hours away. Tweetsie's haunted Ghost Train in Blowing Rock, about 2 hours from Charlotte, has nights from Oct 16 to Oct 31, with its scariest parts recommended for 8 and up. The gentle Hayride on the Rails trolley in Asheville, also about 2 hours away, runs Oct 17 to 31. Durham's pumpkin patch train is about 2 hr 30 min away.

Is there a Halloween train near Raleigh, North Carolina that won't scare a toddler?

Yes. Track or Treat at the New Hope Valley Railway in New Hill is about 30 to 35 minutes from Raleigh, and its 2:15 to 5:15 PM Saturday trains on Oct 17 and 24 run in daylight with friendly characters like witches and pumpkins. The Museum of Life and Science Pumpkin Patch Express in Durham, about 30 minutes away, is gentler still, with a short train ride back from the patch on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25.

Are there Halloween events for kids near Greensboro, North Carolina?

From Greensboro, the closest Halloween train is the Pumpkin Patch Express at Durham's Museum of Life and Science, about 1 hour away, a gentle pumpkin outing on Oct 17, 18, 24 and 25. Track or Treat in New Hill, about 1 hr 30 min away, is a one-hour costume ride on Oct 17, 23 and 24. For older kids, Tweetsie's haunted Ghost Train in Blowing Rock is about 2 hours away, with nights through Oct 31.

Can kids dress up for Track or Treat at New Hope Valley Railway?

Yes, the New Hope Valley Railway encourages passengers of all ages to come in costume for Track or Treat. Its dress code still applies: shirts and shoes are required, and closed-toe shoes are recommended because you walk through a working rail yard. The excursion cars are open-sided with roofs, so a costume that layers over a jacket works best for the 6:30 and 7:45 PM trains.

Is the Tweetsie Ghost Train too much for a 3 year old?

For most 3-year-olds, yes. Tweetsie recommends the Ghost Train ride, Haunted House and Freaky Forest for ages 8 and older, and the ride runs in the dark on an open-air train. Kids 2 and under get in free, and the park has gentler parts like trick-or-treating, a dance party and the Spooktacular show. A daylight Track or Treat train near Raleigh is a calmer first Halloween train.

Can I still get a Halloween train ride in North Carolina this weekend?

Likely yes, as of October 14, but move fast. Tweetsie showed no sold-out dates for Oct 16 and 17, Track or Treat had no sold-out notice for Oct 17, and the Craggy Mountain Line had seats on Oct 17 at 4 and 6 PM, though the 6 PM was nearly full. Durham's Oct 17 morning slots were close to gone. Check each booking page for live availability.

Do we have to pay museum admission on top of the Durham Pumpkin Patch Express ticket?

Yes, museum admission is required in addition to the event ticket, and members get in free. General admission is $24, children $19, and seniors 65 and up $22. The Pumpkin Patch Express ticket is $16 per person ages 3 and up, or $13.50 for the 2:30 to 3:30 PM slots. Every attendee, adults included, needs an event ticket, while children 2 and under are free.

What should my kids wear on an open-air train at night in the NC mountains?

Dress them for winter, not fall. Nights in the High Country around Blowing Rock usually drop into the 30s and 40s by late October, and wind on an open-air train makes it feel colder. Tweetsie runs rain or shine. Put warm layers, a hat and gloves under or over the costume, and bring a rain shell if showers are forecast.

Is there a Halloween train running on Oct 31 in North Carolina?

Yes, as of October 14 two North Carolina rides list Saturday, Oct 31. Tweetsie's Ghost Train in Blowing Rock runs that night from 7:00 to 10:30 PM, with its haunted parts recommended for 8 and up. For a gentler option, the Craggy Mountain Line's Hayride on the Rails trolley in Asheville has 4:00 and 6:00 PM departures that day, though the 6:00 PM slot was nearly full when last checked.

Is there a restroom on the New Hope Valley Railway train in New Hill?

No, the New Hope Valley Railway has no restrooms on its trains, but there are restrooms in the rail yard at Bonsal station. Plan a stop before boarding, since the ride lasts about an hour. The railway also asks families to arrive 30 minutes early because trains leave on time and cannot wait for late arrivals. Six child-size ear protectors can be borrowed free from the gift shop for the horn.

Do babies need a ticket for North Carolina Halloween trains like Tweetsie?

Usually not. Tweetsie admits kids 2 and under to the Ghost Train free, and the New Hope Valley Railway lets children under 2 ride free with a ticketed adult, on a lap if the train is full. At Durham's Museum of Life and Science, kids 2 and under are free and ride on an adult's lap. The Craggy Mountain Line says children 3 and under ride its trolleys free, but confirm on its booking page.
