Service dogs on COASTER

  • Service animals individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities ride all NCTD vehicles.
  • They stay leashed or harnessed (unless that interferes with their task), in a down or sit position, out of the aisle and off the seats.
  • If a service animal is removed, the owner can appeal in writing to NCTD's Civil Rights Officer.

Emotional support dogs: NCTD's policy only exempts service animals that are trained to perform tasks, so other animals follow the small-pet carrier rule. Our service dog guide explains the difference.

Tips for riding COASTER with kids and a dog

  • Sit on the ocean side (the right side heading south) between Oceanside and Del Mar.
  • A soft carrier that fits on your lap is easiest on crowded weekend trains.
  • The same NCTD rule covers the SPRINTER and BREEZE buses, so a carrier works for the whole North County trip.

A page from Rally's ride

In the book, Rally's favorite moment is the window: the train starts, the ocean slides by, and a white bird keeps pace with the car. A dog who rides COASTER gets a version of that, as long as the rules above are met. The free coloring and activity pack has a coloring page of that window, if your kids want to draw their own dog in the seat.
