How Albany saved its depot district
Thronateeska is a Muskogee Creek word, often translated as "flint picking up place," and it names the land around present-day Albany and the Flint River. The organization that carries the name grew from two earlier groups: the Albany Junior Museum, started in 1959 by the Junior League of Albany, and the Southwest Georgia Historical Society, organized in 1969. In 1974, community-minded citizens took up the cause of reviving the historic downtown railroad depot area, and the two groups merged into the Thronateeska Heritage Foundation.
Railroads made Albany. Seven rail lines radiated from the city and met at Union Depot, built in 1913 and used by five different railroads. Through Thronateeska's work, that station was saved, turned into the History Museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The Tift Warehouse, built in 1857 as Albany's original passenger and freight depot, the REA building and the brick street out front are also on the Register as Albany's Railroad Depot Historic District.
The campus kept growing. In 2008 the new Science Museum and Wetherbee Planetarium opened, with a facade that borrows architectural features from the original 1926 Central of Georgia roundhouse. In 2014 the South Georgia Archives were added to the historic Fryer-Merritt House, which holds the administrative offices. Today the whole campus, called Heritage Plaza, sits on Albany's only remaining brick street, laid in 1913.
Union Station, a rail car and a dome full of stars
Start at the History Museum inside the 1913 Union Station, where two galleries hold changing exhibits and the train exhibit tells how five railroads and seven rail lines made Albany a rail hub. The campus also has a rail car display, and the Georgia Museum of Surveying and Mapping shows more than 100 surveying instruments and tools going back to the 1700s.
Across Heritage Plaza, the Science Museum's interactive exhibits include a half-scale model of the Wright Flyer, a cast of the 36-million-year-old whale Zygorhiza found with a shark in its belly, and stories of local inventions like the Bobs Candy Company's candy cane twisting machine. The Wetherbee Planetarium's 40-foot HD fulldome screen shows a rotating schedule of programs, and one show comes with every admission.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

A planetarium next to an old train station is such a sweet pairing. The lights go down, everything is dark for a moment, and then the dome bursts into stars. That is close to the tunnel in our book, where the train goes dark before a big bright light and happy cheers. My kids are learning to read, and they always shout the cheer part. You can find the tunnel page on our coloring pages.
