Taking the kids to Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway? Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Corinth.

A family brings Durant's 1864 line back to life

The tracks out of Corinth have a long history. The Adirondack Company, led by Dr. Thomas Durant, built this line in 1864 to run from Saratoga Springs north to North Creek, and the route later became known as the Adirondack Branch. The Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway now runs excursion trains over a portion of that former branch, in the upper Hudson River region of the Adirondacks.

The railway started as a family owned and operated line. With help from friends and relatives, the family rehabilitated the track and equipment and began offering rides in 2022. In the years since, they have grown the fleet of vintage railcars and locomotives and expanded the schedule to scenic trips, holiday trains, dinner rides, special events and even weddings. Visitor reviews often mention the owner, who also serves as conductor, and a crew that clearly enjoys sharing the train.

Preservation is part of the work too. In 2025 the Delaware & Hudson Railway Historical Society saved D&H RS3 No. 4085 after years of neglect, and the locomotive was moved to Corinth to begin a new life. It is set for an extensive overhaul and a repaint into the classic D&H Lightning Stripe scheme, with the railway hoping to have it running by late 2026.

Riding south from Corinth Station

Trains leave from Corinth Station at 9 Railroad Place and head south through marshes and deep forest in the Southern Adirondacks before returning to Corinth. The railway's pages give the trip as about 7 miles south, or 6 to 12 miles depending on the ride, and most excursions last 1 to 1.5 hours. You can choose your car: standard commuter coaches like the Polar Palace, the Deluxe Coach McCoy Hicks with big lounge seats, the Spier Falls lounge car, First Class table seating, a private caboose, or a single VIP seat in the locomotive cab.

Up front, every train is pulled by an Alco. The roster includes Alco 5, a 660 horsepower S-1 built in Schenectady in 1947 and kept completely original, plus D&H 3021, a 1943 Alco S2 built for the US Army, SC&H 3501, a 1951 Alco RS1 that served Dupont and the Department of Energy, and three Delaware & Hudson RS3s from 1952, Nos. 4085, 4103 and 4118. The railway cycles these engines through its trains during the year.

  2. D&H RS3 No. 4085Rescued in 2025 by the Delaware & Hudson Railway Historical Society and now in Corinth for an overhaul and a return to Lightning Stripe paint.
  3. The Delaware & Hudson RS3 trioNos. 4085, 4103 and 4118, all built in 1952, put a matched set of Delaware & Hudson diesels back to work in the Adirondacks.
  4. Locomotive cab rideOne VIP seat per trip lets a single passenger ride in the cab with the crew.
  5. The private cabooseGroups of up to 15 can reserve the whole caboose for their own party.

Pumpkins, Santa and a seat by the engine

The rides are listed for all ages and are short enough for small children, at about 1 to 1.5 hours. On the Pumpkin Picker, each child gets to pick a pumpkin at the patch and decorate it. The Candy Cane Express is the railway's most popular trip: a one hour Christmas ride with candy canes, cookies and hot chocolate on the way to see Santa, with elves and twinkling lights in heated coaches.

Lap children ages 1 to 3 have their own fare, and infants under 1 ride free on an adult's lap. For a train-obsessed older child, the single locomotive cab seat is a memorable splurge.

Plan your visit: tips for Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway

  • Book online and search by date; each ride has its own schedule and fares.
  • Pick your car when booking, from standard coach to First Class tables and the private caboose.
  • Only one locomotive cab seat is sold per trip, so book early if you want it.
  • Infants under 1 ride free on a lap; lap children 1 to 3 have a reduced fare.

Holiday season is the railway's busiest time. The Candy Cane Express takes families on an hour long Christmas ride through the Southern Adirondacks with candy canes, cookies, hot chocolate and a visit with Santa, and it is the most popular trip on the calendar. In fall, the Pumpkin Picker heads to a pumpkin patch where every child chooses a pumpkin to decorate. Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

Watercolor of Rally the corgi dreaming about his toy turtle, green bone and yellow ball
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

With a pumpkin patch in fall and Santa in winter, a family might pack very different bags for this little railroad depending on the month. In our book, Rally packs his turtle toy, his green bone and his yellow ball before the trip. I can picture a small traveler here adding mittens and a candy cane to the pile. Our coloring pages have Rally ready to go.
