Taking the kids to Frisco Depot Museum? Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Hugo.

Hugo's big Frisco station, saved by the county historical society

The Frisco railroad built this depot in Hugo in 1914, and it served trains until the 1960s. It was a substantial station for the line: Choctaw County's tourism office describes it as the third largest depot on the Frisco in Oklahoma. Inside, it held a Harvey House lunchroom for people passing through on the trains, and the room survives today.

Once the railroad no longer needed it, the Choctaw County Historical Society took on the building and restored it, room by room. The society now runs it as a museum about Choctaw County, the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway that gave the depot its name, and the circus heritage that gave Hugo its nickname, Circus City USA. The volunteers' work turned a station that had outlived its railroad use into a home for the whole county's memories.

A lunchroom, a little circus and a model railroad under one roof

Visitors describe a building packed with local history. The former Harvey House restaurant and its boarding room are on view, along with railroad photos and equipment, a model railroad, vintage schoolroom displays, period businesses and farm and home life. Hugo's circus heritage gets its own space, including a miniature five-ring circus and circus memorabilia, and the oddities include a section of a Southwestern Bell switching center and an antique whiskey still. The museum does not post an exhibit list online, so ask the volunteers what is new.

Don’t miss

  1. The Harvey House lunchroomThe restored lunchroom and boarding room show where travelers once ate and stayed, right inside the station.
  2. Miniature five-ring circusA tiny circus that tells Hugo's Circus City USA story in a way kids can take in.
  3. The model railroadA small-scale railroad inside a real Frisco station, which makes the connection easy for kids to see.

Small circus, small trains, big old building

The model railroad and the miniature circus are the two things most likely to hold a young child's attention, and the old schoolroom displays give older kids a look at how children learned a century ago. The museum does not list stroller or accessibility details online, so call ahead if you need them.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

Watercolor of Rally the corgi looking out an arched train window at the ocean and a white bird
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

I like to imagine families in the Harvey House lunchroom at this depot, watching through the glass for their train. In our book, Rally presses his nose to an arched train window, sees the ocean, and says hello to a white bird. Kids find wonder in what is just outside the glass. My mom dreamed up that moment for her grandkids, and you can read how it became a book on our story page.
