The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library hosts a special storytime with Ballet Midwest. Young children meet some of the characters and dancers from this year's Nutcracker production, watch short dance performances, dance along with the performers, and listen to a reading of The Nutcracker.
The storytime runs from 10 to 10:30 am on Saturday, December 5, and is aimed at early learners from birth through pre-K. At half an hour, it is a gentle introduction to ballet for little ones who might not sit through a full performance, and a fun way to start a Saturday in downtown Topeka during the holidays. The program is in person at the main library at 1515 SW 10th Avenue, and the listing does not mention registration.
Parent tip: It is a short 30 minute program for babies through preschoolers, so arrive a few minutes early to settle in.

Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy presents Elf The Musical JR. in December 2026. The story follows Buddy, an orphan who crawls into Santa's bag and ends up at the North Pole, where he is raised as an elf until his size and poor toy making make him face the truth. He then sets off for New York City to find his birth father and win over a family that has stopped believing in Santa.
Visit Topeka lists two sets of performance dates, December 11 to 19 and December 13 to 20, so the run covers those days. The musical features songs by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin. It was last produced by the theatre in 2017. Showtimes and ticket prices were not posted on the tourism pages, so contact the theatre.

The Lawrence Old Fashioned Christmas Parade site announces the next parade for December 5, 2026, on Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence. The parade is built around authentic horse-drawn carriages and wagons dressed in garland and bells.
The site notes the parade skipped 2025, so this is the return of a tradition that has run for more than 30 years. A downtown parking map is posted on the site. The page does not give a start time, so check the site or the organizer's phone line before heading out. Kids who like horses will probably enjoy this one more than a float-heavy parade.
Parent tip: Bring blankets and a warm drink, and look at the parking map in advance since downtown streets close for the parade.
