Electric Glow is a lights only night at the Overland Park Arboretum designed for guests who prefer a quieter, more relaxed holiday light experience. It runs from 5 to 8 pm on December 16, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 26 with limited capacity. The page describes smaller crowds, a low sensory atmosphere and a stroll to see the illuminated displays at your own pace.
Unlike the traditional Luminary Walk, these evenings have no Santa visit, no live holiday music, no candlelit woods and no holiday trains. Tickets are $12 per person, and children 5 and under are free but still need a ticket to hold their spot. It is a good fit for families with young children who find crowds hard.
Parent tip: Buy tickets online ahead of time. Choose this over the Luminary Walk if crowds or noise bother your child.

On Saturday, December 19, the Ernie Miller Nature Center holds its Winter Solstice Celebration, a calm change of pace from the hectic holiday season. Families wander through the woods beside Little Cedar Creek on paths glowing with luminaries, warm up at the fire, hear tales about the year's longest night, meet live owls and roast marshmallows over a campfire.
The route is roughly one mile of paved trail with a few steep slopes, and it is outside, so wear clothes that suit the weather. Every guest, grown-ups included, needs a paid spot. Advance prices are $13 for residents and $14 for nonresidents, and spots on site cost $15 if any remain. During the event, the park and building are shut to anyone who has no ticket.
Parent tip: Purchase tickets early, because the park is off limits to people without one. Wear weather-appropriate clothing.
