The Gentex Grand Rapids Santa Parade rolls through downtown on Saturday, November 21, starting at 5 pm. More than 50 festive entries take part, and Santa himself makes the trip from the North Pole, arriving at Rosa Parks Circle around 6:30 pm.
Santa then joins the City of Grand Rapids for the annual tree lighting ceremony at 6:45 pm. The free evening also includes a children's letter writing station with free USPS delivery to the North Pole, plus family activities after the tree lighting. Organizers encourage families to bundle up, since everything happens outdoors in late November. It is one of the biggest free family nights of the season in West Michigan, so plan extra time for parking and for finding a good viewing spot along the route.
Parent tip: Dress warmly, and bring a letter for Santa or write one at the free letter writing station. The parade route is posted on the official site.

Grand Rapids Public Library celebrates the new year early at the Main Library on Thursday, December 31, from 11 am to noon. Children enjoy crafts and snacks, and when the clock strikes noon the room turns into a dance party.
The program is designed for ages 0 to 11, so even babies and toddlers can join the countdown without staying up late. Fancy dress or pajamas are encouraged but not required. The event description is posted in both English and Spanish, and the program is free. Several other GRPL branches hold their own Happy Noon Year parties at the same hour. GRPL holds the same Happy Noon Year party at its Seymour, Van Belkum, Ottawa Hills, West Leonard and Yankee Clipper branches at 11 am, so families can choose the closest one.
Parent tip: Pajamas or party clothes are welcome. Other GRPL branches, including Seymour, Van Belkum and Ottawa Hills, host the same party if one is closer.

Kent District Library's Krause Memorial Branch in Rockford hosts live reindeer on Wednesday, December 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The visitors come from Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farms, described by the library as traveling from the North Pole.
The two hour window makes it easier to stop by after school or dinner. The program takes place outdoors, so warm layers are a must. Families can bring quarters to buy treats to feed the reindeer, and the library encourages bringing a camera. The event is free, open to all ages, and no registration is listed. Rockford families can also check the branch calendar for other December programs, including the Uke-Tide Carols evening and Winter Wonder Stories for little ones later in the month.
Parent tip: It will be dark and cold in the evening, so dress warmly, and bring quarters for treats.

Kent District Library's Krause Memorial Branch hosts Uke-Tide Carols on Wednesday, December 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The library's Rock the Uke players perform songs celebrating the season, and families can come and go during the two hour evening.
Along with the music, there is a fun craft for visitors and refreshments to enjoy. The event is held in collaboration with the City of Rockford Chamber of Commerce winter events and is sponsored by the Friends of the Krause Memorial Branch. It is listed for all ages, it is free, and no registration is shown. Families can drop in for a few songs and the craft rather than staying the whole time, which makes it an easy add on to an evening walk through downtown Rockford.
Parent tip: The two hour window lets you drop in whenever it fits your evening.

Kent District Library's Krause Memorial Branch in Rockford offers Winter Wonder Stories twice right before Christmas: Tuesday, December 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and Wednesday, December 23, from 10 to 11 am. Children get cozy while listening to seasonal stories read aloud.
After the stories, kids create fun winter themed crafts to bring home. The program is aimed at young children ages 0 to 5, which makes it a gentle option for toddlers and preschoolers during the busy week before the holiday. It is free, and no registration is listed, so families can choose whichever session fits their schedule. Stories and crafts are a calm way to fill a winter break morning or evening, and the small group setting suits children who are still getting used to library programs.
Parent tip: Pick the evening session for a pajama friendly bedtime outing, or the morning session if your little one naps in the afternoon.

Kent District Library's Wyoming Branch invites families to stroll down Gingerbread Lane on Thursday, December 10, from 4 to 5 pm. Each child gets to make and decorate a simple gingerbread house to take home.
The library notes that the gingerbread house materials are not meant to be eaten, so this is a craft rather than a snack. Space is limited and seats are first come, first served, with doors opening 15 minutes before the program starts. The event is aimed at families with children and is free. Plan to stay for the full hour so your child has time to finish decorating. Because space is limited, families with more than one child may want to arrive as soon as doors open.
Parent tip: Arrive when doors open 15 minutes early, since space is first come, first served. The materials are not for eating.

The program is listed for all ages, so it works well for siblings of different ages, and the after school time slot is convenient for families. It is free, and the library calendar shows no registration requirement. Kids who loved the reindeer visits at other branches may enjoy meeting these animal friends too. Kent District Library hosts a variety of December programs across its branches, so families who enjoy this visit can look for reindeer visits and holiday crafts at nearby locations as well.

Kent District Library brings live reindeer to the Kentwood Branch on Saturday morning, December 19, from 10 to 11 am. The animals come from Rooftop Landing Reindeer Farms, and the library describes them as traveling all the way from the North Pole for the visit.
The program is held outdoors, so children can see the reindeer up close in the library grounds. Families may bring quarters to buy treats for feeding the reindeer if they wish, and the library suggests bringing a camera for photos. It is listed for all ages and is free to attend, with no registration noted on the calendar. This visit falls on the first Saturday of winter break, so it can be a relaxed morning outing. Since the reindeer are live animals, younger children may want to watch for a minute before stepping closer.
Parent tip: Dress warmly for an outdoor program and bring quarters if your kids want to buy reindeer treats.
