Saint Barbara's Day is a deep-rooted December tradition in the south of Luxembourg, honouring the miners who worked underground. The Kulturfabrik and the CNCI team up again for an evening night market where children and adults can join creative workshops, catch musical interludes and follow a lively brass band.

The programme includes a parade by the miners' harmonie, a makers' market, workshops, a food truck, a small shop, a sound installation, a performance and a blacksmith at work, plus more surprises. Things begin at 5 pm on Saturday, December 5, at the old slaughterhouse site that now houses the Kulturfabrik. It is a good way to show children a piece of local Minett heritage alongside the start of the Christmas season.

Parent tip: Dress warmly, as the market and parade are partly outdoors in the evening.

This Christmas show from the Esch Conservatoire tells the story of Emma and Georges, two children who have been so naughty this year that they fear Saint Nicholas will leave them empty-handed. They hatch a wild plan to win back their place among the good children in Saint Nicholas's golden book.

The performance brings together the flute, clarinet and cello classes with the German and French diction classes, so expect live music woven through the storytelling. There are two separate showings on the same afternoon, the first in Luxembourgish at 3 pm and the second in French at 4:30 pm, each lasting about an hour. Tickets start at 3 euros and can be booked online through the listing. It is a gentle, home-grown way to get into the Kleeschen spirit the day before Saint Nicholas Day.

Parent tip: Pick the showing in the language your child follows best; the two performances are separate tickets.

The EltereCafé, run by the Eltereschoul of Kannerschlass, is a relaxed meeting point for parents to talk about raising children, meet other families, swap tips and simply enjoy a laugh together. For this December session the children are told stories all about winter.

The afternoon is led by two graduate educators, Siri Peiffer and Françoise Erpelding, and is held in Luxembourgish and German. It is billed as a workshop for parents and children, with limited places, so registration through the Kannerschlass Eltereschoul agenda is needed. It runs from 3 to 5 pm on Tuesday, December 8, in Esch-sur-Alzette, and is a calm, cosy option for families with young children during the busy run-up to Christmas.

Parent tip: Stories are told in Luxembourgish and German. Book early as places are limited.

The Conservatoire's Brass Band puts on a festive evening mixing competition pieces, film music, well-loved Christmas melodies and a few surprises. The organisers describe it as a moment to share with family or friends as the holidays arrive, so it suits children who enjoy a big, bright brass sound.

The concert starts at 7:30 pm. Around 8:30 pm, at the end of the music, the Conservatoire and the Friends of the Brass Band invite the audience to a friendly Christmas reception with drinks and sweet treats. As the holidays approach, the pupils of the Differdange regional music school invite families to a warm, friendly Christmas concert. The programme mixes Christmas traditions with discoveries and gives young, promising musicians a chance to shine.

The concert is held in the Saint-Étienne church in Oberkorn, part of the commune of Differdange, at 6:30 pm on Thursday, December 17. The organisers describe it as a musical pause to share with family or friends to get into the Christmas spirit. It is a concert, not a church service. In this Youth Corner Film workshop at the CNA in Dudelange, cardboard meets cinema. Children aged 6 to 12 explore special-effects techniques to reinvent the Christmas story their own way, making the sets and costumes themselves and imagining or reimagining the characters before bringing them to life on camera.

The workshop is led by the CinéKrafté collective and runs over three Saturday mornings, November 14, 21 and 28, from 10 am to 12:30 pm. Attending all three sessions is compulsory. At the end, each child leaves with a finished film to share with family over the holidays. It is a great fit for crafty children who like making things and telling stories.
