Europa Expérience Luxembourg, the European Parliament's interactive visitor centre in Kirchberg, runs a Christmas treasure hunt for all ages through the holiday season. Visitors look for symbols from a special advent calendar hidden throughout the centre. Each symbol reveals a multiple choice question about the culture, traditions and institutions of the European Union.

Once all the answers are found, players decode a secret word and win a prize. The centre presents it as a playful way to celebrate Christmas while learning about Europe. The hunt runs Monday to Saturday from Friday November 20 to Wednesday December 23, 2026, from 10 am to 6 pm, with no Sunday dates listed.

Parent tip: Plan your visit for a weekday or Saturday, as no Sunday dates are listed. Younger children will need help with the questions, so treat it as a team game.

Each winter the heart of Luxembourg City is turned into a fairy tale setting of lights for Winterlights, run by the Ville de Luxembourg with the Luxembourg City Tourist Office. Christmas markets are spread over several sites in the city, alongside concerts, exhibitions, shows and activities. The city says children, young people and adults are all welcome to spend magical moments in a family, festive atmosphere, and the tourist office notes that the markets offer entertainment and concerts for young and old.

The 2026 edition runs from Friday November 20, 2026 to Sunday January 3, 2027. The markets open daily from 11 am, closing at 9 pm from Sunday to Thursday and at 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Many of the family events in this guide, from museum programmes to children's films, are part of the wider Winterlights season.

Parent tip: Arrive in the late afternoon to see the lights come on. Bus stops Hamilius Quai 1 and 2 are close to the central markets.

Over the holiday season the Lëtzebuerg City Museum runs a winter edition of its Museum Break programme. The museum describes it as a magical pause between creativity and conviviality, held while the lights of its Christmas tree shine through the large windows of the building in the old town. The activities are planned so that all generations, from children to grandparents, find something to enjoy.

Museum Break, Winter edition runs from Thursday December 3, 2026 to Sunday January 3, 2027 and is free. It is a good way to warm up between visits to the nearby Christmas markets. One of the highlights in the series is a family Christmas concert by Kammerata Luxembourg on Sunday December 20, listed separately.

Parent tip: Check the City Museum agenda for the exact activities on the day you plan to visit; the museum is a short walk from the Place d'Armes markets.

The museum says everyone is welcome, whether you come as a family, with friends or on your own. Junior Einsteins Science Club runs three 50 minute Christmas workshops on the afternoon of Saturday December 5, each explained in both French and English. At 2:30 pm, Christmas Crystals and Snowballs shows how crystals such as snowflakes form; each child grows a salt crystal decoration on a pipe cleaner shape in a jar and makes a snowball from instant snow, taking both home. The crystals keep growing for a few days and can then be hung on the tree.

At 3:30 pm, Light Up Christmas has children make a lemon light bulb and a potato battery. At 4:30 pm, Snowball Catapults has them build and test a catapult for snowballs. The workshops are for ages 5 to 11 and cost 30 euros per child each, paid when booking. The leader handles the hot water in the crystal session.

Parent tip: Each workshop is booked and paid separately at 30 euros. Contact Luxembourg@junioreinsteinsscienceclub.com to reserve.

On the morning before Kleeschen day, the Tuffi team from the Lëtzebuerg City Bibliothèque invites children to listen to stories about Saint Nicholas. The questions are the ones children ask every year: what do they need to do so the good man comes down the chimney at night with presents, and what happens if a house has no chimney at all. The stories should help find some answers.

After the stories the children make something nice by hand, with the idea that it could be given to someone who does not receive a present. The session lasts one hour, is held in Luxembourgish and takes place at Villa Vauban, the city's art museum. It is for children aged 4 to 10. Places must be booked through citybiblio.lu, with registration open from November 3.

Parent tip: Book a place on citybiblio.lu; registration opened on November 3 and is compulsory. The session is in Luxembourgish.

At 4:15 pm, Monsieur Bout-de-Bois (Stick Man) is shown with two short wordless films.

Both screenings are at the Auditorium Cité in Cercle Cité, in the city centre. Tickets cost 3.70 euros, 2.40 euros reduced and 1.50 euros with the Kulturpass.

This 45 minute musical story at the Philharmonie is made for children aged 2 to 4. Alva the little elf has one big Christmas wish: to become a Christmas elf, and more precisely an elf who looks after animals. She has prepared well, but the task turns out to be harder than expected, so her best friend Finn steps in, and the young audience is asked to help too.

The show runs in Luxembourgish as D'Krëschtwichtelchen Alva from Thursday December 10 to Saturday December 12, and in French as Alva, l'elfe de Noël on Sunday December 13, with three performances that day. It takes place in the Espace Découverte, the Philharmonie's small hall for the youngest listeners, with costumes and sets. Tickets are 14 euros for children and 20 euros for adults, with free seating.

Parent tip: Several sessions already show a waiting list on the Philharmonie site, so book early or join the list. Pick the Sunday shows if your child understands French better than Luxembourgish.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis returns to the Philharmonie in December, and alongside their evening concert they are giving a Christmas programme designed for children. Marsalis presents the concert himself, joined by singers Georgia Heers and Catherine Russell, so young listeners hear a full big band up close with festive songs.

The concert lasts 60 minutes with no interval and is presented in English. The Philharmonie recommends it for ages 9 to 12, and it belongs to the Miouzik series of musical stories for young audiences. Full price tickets range from 26 to 68 euros depending on the seat category, and anyone under 18 gets a 60 percent reduction. Kulturpass holders are welcome.

Parent tip: Book the under 18 rate for children to save 60 percent. The concert is in English, so it suits older children comfortable with the language.

For one Saturday morning, ErwuesseBildung turns its rooms into a cinema. The morning starts with a shared breakfast of croissants, hot chocolate, coffee and everything else that makes a good breakfast. Once everyone has eaten, the children's film Wunder einer Weihnachtsnacht is shown. It tells the story of Nikolas, an orphan boy in a Lapland village who carves small wooden toys as Christmas Eve gifts for the families who take turns caring for him, until a grumpy carpenter threatens the tradition.

After the film there is a short discussion and a small craft. The morning is aimed at children aged 5 to 8 together with their parents or grandparents, and runs in German. The breakfast costs 6 euros for adults and 3 euros for children, paid in advance by bank transfer to EwB with the reference Kinozauber.

Parent tip: Register by email at info@ewb.lu and pay the breakfast in advance by transfer, reference Kinozauber. The entrance is G in the Centre Convict, ground floor.

For this Tuffi session from the city library, Claudine Furlano of Zoom Editions reads a winter story about animals on the move during the cold season. She tells it in a theatrical way using a kamishibai, the Japanese paper theatre where pictures slide through a wooden frame as the story unfolds.

Because Claudine loves books, the session ends with a craft: each child goes home with a small handmade booklet ready to illustrate. The reading is in Luxembourgish with German sign language interpretation by Véronique Steinmetz of the Centre de Logopédie. It takes place at the Lëtzebuerg City Museum and lasts one hour. It is for children aged 6 to 10, and places must be booked through citybiblio.lu, with registration open from November 3.

Parent tip: Registration on citybiblio.lu is compulsory. Sign language interpretation is provided, which makes this a good choice for deaf or hard of hearing children who use German sign language.

The Philharmonie shows the classic Christmas film Home Alone with the music performed live, presented as a film to see again as a family over the holidays. In the story, a boy accidentally left behind when his family flies off on holiday defends the house against two clumsy burglars, a plot the Philharmonie describes as every parent's nightmare and every child's dream.

There are two evenings. On Friday December 18 the film is shown in English with German subtitles, and on Saturday December 19 it is shown in French with English subtitles under the title Maman, j'ai raté l'avion. Both start at 7:30 pm. The Philharmonie states the film is suitable for ages 6 and up. Tickets range from 26 to 58 euros depending on the seat category.

Parent tip: Choose the evening by language: Friday is in English, Saturday in French. It is an evening show, so plan for a late bedtime with younger children.

A few days before Christmas, the chamber ensemble Kammerata Luxembourg invites young and old to a musical journey into the magic of the season at the Lëtzebuerg City Museum. The programme mixes lively baroque pieces with pastoral music inspired by Christmas, played on strings, flute, bassoon and harp, and moves between joyful, festive moments and quieter, calmer ones.

The programme includes Telemann, Stenhammar, a trio from Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ, Jolivet's Pastorale de Noël and Corelli's Christmas Concerto. The museum presents it as a concert open to everyone, a chance to slow down and enjoy the music as a family or with friends. It starts at 11 am on Sunday December 20 and is part of the museum's Museum Break winter programme.

Parent tip: Contact citymuseum@2musees.vdl.lu to check whether booking is needed. A late morning start makes it easy to combine with lunch and the Christmas markets.
