North of the River Recreation and Park District is collecting letters to Santa again this season. From November 16 through December 9, children can drop letters into Santa's red mailbox near the entrance of RiverLakes Community Center any day, or hand them in on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm at the Greenacres, Riverview and Rasmussen community centers.
Kids can write their own letter or use the district's printable template from its website. Every letter that includes a full name and return address and arrives by December 9 will get a personal reply from Santa, and no postage stamp is needed. It is free and open to all ages, which makes it an easy add-on to a park visit or another NOR event.
Parent tip: Include your child's full name and mailing address so Santa can write back. The cutoff for a reply is December 9.

During HolidayLights, Santa has a cozy spot in the Pines area of CALM Zoo from Nov 28 through Dec 24. He is there Sunday through Thursday from 5:45 to 8:45 pm and Friday and Saturday from 5:45 to 9:45 pm. The visit is a photo moment, so bring your own camera or plan for the photo station on site.
Right outside the Pines Marketplace gift store is the Creation Station, a simple make-and-take activity that is also included with admission. A visit to Santa fits easily into the full lights walk, which runs from 5:30 pm. Admission is $19 for adults, $16 for youth ages 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and under. Buy tickets online through VBO. Friday and Saturday tickets use timed arrival windows.

North of the River Recreation and Park District sends Santa to the doorsteps of district residents on three sets of weekday evenings in December. Each visit lasts about five to ten minutes, so it works well for toddlers and young children who enjoy a short, personal moment with Santa without leaving the house.
Priority goes to children ages 8 and under. Visits run Wednesday through Friday from 5:30 to 9 pm on Dec 2 to 4, Dec 9 to 11 and Dec 16 to 18. Reservations open on Nov 18, and families can call Riverview Community Center at 661.392.2020 to book a slot. The service is free, and it is meant for residents of the district, so check the district boundaries on norfun.org before you call.
Parent tip: Reserve early because evening slots fill quickly. Ask about your address when you call, since visits are for district residents.

Santa sets up his studio at The Marketplace on Ming Avenue for three weekends in December: Friday through Sunday on December 4 to 6, 11 to 13 and 18 to 20, from noon to 4 pm each day. Visiting is free, and tickets are not required, although the center appreciates an RSVP through its Eventbrite link.
Families who bring Marketplace receipts dated December 4 to 20 totaling $35 or more before tax can receive one free 5x7 photo sheet with Santa, up to a $20 value and limited to one per household. The offer is only good at the Santa Studio during the posted hours. Note that an Eventbrite ticket does not hold a place in line, so plan for a short wait on busy weekend afternoons.
Parent tip: Bring receipts from Marketplace shops dated Dec 4 to 20 to claim the free photo. RSVPs are appreciated but do not reserve a spot in line.

The Kern County Museum lights up its historic village for one night of Holiday Lamplight Tours on Saturday, December 5, from 5:30 to 9 pm. The museum's 2026 flyer lists a holiday hayride, guided tours of the decorated historic houses, holiday music and carolers, sweets and food, a coffee and hot chocolate bar, and pictures with Santa.
Admission is $10 for everyone ages 3 and up, which makes this one of the more affordable Santa outings in town. Much of the evening is spent outdoors moving between buildings on the museum grounds on Chester Avenue, so dress for a cool December night. Food vendors are expected on site. It is a one-night event, so mark the date and plan to arrive close to the 5:30 pm opening to enjoy the hayride before the evening gets busy.
Parent tip: Dress warmly, since the tours and hayride are outdoors after dark. Children under 3 are not included in the paid admission.

North of the River Recreation and Park District hosts its Santa Breakfast on Saturday, December 5, from 8:30 to 10 am at the Rasmussen Center on East Roberts Lane. The district describes it as a festive morning of good food and Christmas spirit with Santa, open to all ages.
Tickets are $10, and children 2 and under eat free. Presale tickets are sold online or at any NOR community center from October 19 to December 3, and any remaining tickets are sold at the door based on availability. Since door sales depend on what is left, families with a set plan should buy ahead. The same weekend pairs well with the district's Christmas parade the following Saturday.
Parent tip: Buy presale tickets by December 3 online or at a NOR community center, since door tickets depend on availability.

Civic Dance Center's production of The Nutcracker returns for its 49th year from December 11 to 13. Performances are Friday, December 11 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, December 12 at 1 pm and 7:30 pm, and Sunday, December 13 at 1 pm, with tickets sold through AXS.
The studio points out that its Nutcracker is one of the few productions in the country still performed with a live orchestra, and the cast brings together local dancers and musicians from the community. The two weekend matinees are the easiest fit for younger children. The studio also runs shorter Young People's Concerts for school groups at the Dignity Health Convention Center Theater earlier that week. Each performance features the studio's dancers alongside local musicians, so the production feels like a true community event as well as a holiday show.
Parent tip: Choose a 1 pm matinee for younger kids. Tickets are sold through the AXS links on the Civic Dance Center page.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
