Service dogs on Caltrain

  • A service animal is any guide dog, signal dog or other animal individually trained to work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.
  • It stays under your constant supervision and control, sits, stands or lies on the floor, and can't block the aisle. It may ride on your lap if needed to do its job.
  • Misbehavior such as attacking or unprovoked growling gets the animal removed; repeat problems can end riding privileges.
  • Volunteer 4-H puppy raisers for Guide Dogs for the Blind can board with puppies in training by showing the puppy's ID card.

Emotional support dogs: Emotional support animals are not service animals, so they can't ride Caltrain. Our service dog guide explains the difference.

Tips for riding Caltrain with kids and a dog

  • BART, Muni, VTA and SMART all take small pets in carriers, so you can often route around Caltrain.
  • We recheck Caltrain's rule after the October 19, 2026 code of conduct takes effect and update this page if pets are added.
