Taking the kids to Flagler Museum? Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Palm Beach.

Henry Flagler's palace by the lake, and the railcar beside it

Whitehall was built for Henry Flagler, a co-founder of Standard Oil, and completed in 1902 as a wedding gift for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan. The New York Herald greeted the 75-room house by calling it more wonderful than any palace in Europe, and it still stands as one of the most complete surviving examples of America's Gilded Age, the era the museum dates from 1865 to 1929.

Today Whitehall is a National Historic Landmark, open to the public as the Flagler Museum. Its staff, led by Director and CEO Amanda H. Skier, care for the house, its grounds and its collection, mount a changing program of exhibitions on Gilded Age artists and subjects each year, and run education programs and family days for local children.

For train lovers, the reason to come is on the grounds. The Flagler Kenan Pavilion shelters Flagler's own private Railcar No. 91, and the museum includes it in every general admission visit along with both floors of the mansion. Seeing the railcar beside the house helps visitors picture how a man of Flagler's wealth traveled in his day: in a private car of his own, rolling into Florida rather than arriving by road.

Behind the visitor experience is a staff that includes a chief curator, an education director and a team of docents who lead daily tours through the first floor, so the house is explained by people who know it well rather than left to speak only through its rooms.

Two floors of Whitehall and the pavilion on the lawn

General admission covers the first and second floors of Whitehall, its grounds, and the Flagler Kenan Pavilion with Railcar No. 91. Docent-led tours of the first floor are free with admission, running Tuesday through Saturday at 11 am, 12:30 pm and 2 pm and Sundays at 12:30 pm and 2 pm, each capped at 35 people.

If you prefer to explore on your own, pick up an audio tour wand (English, Spanish, French, German or Portuguese), download the free Flagler Museum app and use your own earbuds, open the free Bloomberg Connects digital guide, or follow a printed self-guide brochure. The museum shop on Whitehall's first floor carries books on the Gilded Age and Florida history, with a children's corner, and the cafe offers a seasonal Gilded Age-style tea and a casual Picnic in the Cocoanut Grove.

  3. Whitehall's first floor docent tourA free guided walk through the grand first-floor rooms, offered several times a day.
  4. Gilded Age-style Tea ServiceA seasonal tea in the museum cafe, served from the day after Thanksgiving through Easter Sunday.
  5. Changing exhibitionsEach year the museum mounts new exhibitions on artists and topics of the Gilded Age, 1865 to 1929.

Visiting Whitehall with children

The museum hands out a printed Tour and Activity Guide for Kids, and Railcar No. 91 gives young train fans a clear goal for the visit. Children 5 and under get in free, and the shop has a children's book corner. Family Days on the grounds, such as Autumn at Whitehall, add music, art activities, games and outdoor fun.

Plan for a quieter, look-don't-touch house museum. Strollers and car-seat baby carriers are not allowed inside, but there is a stroller parking area outside the museum shop. Backpacks of any size and large bags are not permitted, and there is no storage, so leave extras in the car. Visitors under 18 must be with an adult.

  • Use the stroller parking area outside the museum shop.
  • The museum is closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

The staff and members behind Whitehall

The Flagler Museum is run by a professional staff under Director and CEO Amanda H. Skier, with a chief curator, education and events teams, and docents who lead tours every open day. Members get free admission, and the museum shop and cafe help support its work. Group and private tours are another way to visit while backing the museum.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

Watercolor of Rally the corgi dreaming about his toy turtle, green bone and yellow ball
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

Henry Flagler had a whole private railcar to travel in. Rally has one small bag, and he takes packing very seriously: his turtle toy, his green bone and his yellow ball, nothing more. I love imagining Railcar No. 91 next to that little suitcase. Fancy or simple, every trip starts with deciding what matters enough to bring along. If your kids like trains, our train books for toddlers list is a good place to start.
