The story of Christmas in Ogden, UT

Ogden's Christmas Village began in 1962 with a disappointing parade, a dad and a big idea. It started with six little cottages and now has 62, plus a 70-foot tree story that starts with a missile.

How Ogden celebrates

Ogden's Christmas Village began in 1962, when Jerry Green came up with the idea after a disappointing Christmas parade he attended with his son Tom. He found funding and planned the village himself. The park held a large missile, a tribute to a local rocket maker, that did not fit a holiday scene, so it was covered with a 70-foot Christmas tree. Just before the first opening, a test of the lights shorted out the system. It was fixed by opening day, and when Santa switched on the lights, the crowd was amazed. It has grown into a long Ogden tradition.

Christmas last year in Ogden

The 2025 season opened on Saturday, November 29, with a Santa Run at 4:30 p.m., a Holiday Electric Light Parade on Washington Boulevard at 5:30 and lighting and fireworks around 6:30, followed by a drone light show. About 30,000 people came on opening night. The village had 62 cottages and nearly 500,000 lights, and it stayed open through January 1 with free admission. That December, it finished second in USA Today's 10Best contest for best public holiday lights display, up from third place in 2024.
