The East Helena Branch of the Lewis & Clark Library turns its community room into a holiday shop just for kids on Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 10 am to 1 pm. Children ages 5 to 15 can browse and pick out holiday gifts for family members and friends on their own.

Every item is priced at $1.00 or less, and only cash is accepted, so send your child with a few small bills or coins. The library created the market so children who want to give gifts, but struggle to find them at a reasonable price, have another place to shop. Items come from community donations, which the branch accepts December 7 to 10 while the library is open, so families can also help stock the tables ahead of time.

Parent tip: Bring small bills and coins, since the market is cash only and items are $1 or less. Donations are accepted December 7 to 10.

The Lewis & Clark Library takes over its Helena Main Branch on Thursday, December 31, 2026, to ring in the new year at noon instead of midnight. The Noon Year's Eve Party runs from 11 am to 12:30 pm in the library's large community rooms and is free and open to everyone.

The highlight is a balloon drop at noon in the middle of the library, and the party also includes snacks, music and crafts. The library pitches it for families with young children who need to be asleep long before midnight, as well as anyone who would rather not stay up late or drive at night. It makes a relaxed way to end the holiday break with little ones, with no tickets to buy and a downtown location on Last Chance Gulch.

Parent tip: Arrive before noon so children are in place for the balloon drop.

Christmas Under the Big Sky is the 41st edition of the annual downtown Billings holiday parade, held on Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after Thanksgiving. The parade steps off at 6:30 pm and features more than 60 festive floats, making it one of the city's biggest holiday kickoff traditions for families.

Santa rides at the very end as the parade finale, so stay until the last float passes if your children are hoping to wave to him. Downtown Billings lists the starting point near 2nd Avenue North and North 32nd Street by Granite Tower, and in recent years the route has looped along 2nd Avenue North, North Broadway and 3rd Avenue North. Late November evenings in Billings are cold, so plan on warm layers, hats and blankets, and arrive early to find a good curbside spot along the route.

Parent tip: Santa is the final entry, so plan to stay to the end. Parade staging and line-up details are posted by Downtown Billings in November.

The 46th Annual Christmas Stroll fills Historic Downtown Bozeman on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. The Downtown Bozeman Association describes it as an evening of festive activities, great food and fun, and it opens with a lighting ceremony for the downtown holiday decorations.

Families can have their pictures taken with Santa Claus, take a horse-drawn wagon ride, join in carol singing and vote on entries in the Gingerbread House Contest display. Local nonprofits host winter activities along the way, and food vendors set up for the evening. In past years, Santa photos and wagon rides required a small stroll button purchase, so check the Downtown Bozeman website closer to the date for this year's details, the Santa location and any button price. Dress warmly, since most of the stroll happens outdoors on Main Street.

Parent tip: Check downtownbozeman.org closer to the date for the Santa photo location and whether a stroll button is needed for photos and wagon rides.

Holidays on Higgins fills North Higgins Avenue in downtown Missoula with a full day of seasonal fun on Saturday, December 5, 2026. More than 30 local businesses and organizations host family-friendly arts and crafts and other daytime activities, and the evening festivities run from 3 to 7 pm with live caroling, Irish dancing, music, a hay bale and fire area, and a s'mores bar.

Santa arrives at the Missoula Public Library by carriage and meets families on the second floor from 11 am to 3 pm. Photos with him are free, but there is no professional photographer, so bring your own camera or phone. Free carriage rides run from noon to 3 pm and line up on East Pine Street. At 6 pm Santa and the mayor ride a fire truck ladder up to light the tree in front of the North Higgins train station.

Parent tip: Get in the Santa line at the library by 2:15 pm, since Santa leaves at 3 pm to check on his reindeer. Bring your own camera for photos.

A story for the drive home

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
