Zoo Lights fills 80 acres of Denver Zoo with three million lights on select nights from November 23 through January 3. For the 35th season the zoo is bringing back historic light displays from the Wild Lights years, adding new theme nights and returning the Zoo Lights Market. Dickens Nights, December 14 to 16, invite guests to come in their holiday pajamas.
Hours are 4:30 to 9 pm Sunday through Thursday and 4:30 to 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Youth tickets run $18.95 to $22.95 depending on the night, adults $25.95 to $29.95, and kids 2 and under are free. A Zoo Lights Bundle adds hot cocoa in a souvenir cup and ride vouchers, and a few nights are labeled adult only themes, so check the calendar before you pick a date.
Parent tip: Value nights cost less. Some theme nights, such as Gothmas and Adult Nights, are not aimed at kids, so choose dates carefully.

Denver Public Library's Woodbury branch invites the whole family to a Create Together session focused on gingerbread houses. Instead of a kit, families explore open-ended art and craft supplies and upcycled materials to design their own gingerbread house, teaming up and solving building challenges together with friends, family members and neighbors.
The session runs from 4 to 5 pm on Tuesday, December 8, in the branch's basement community room, an easy after-school stop. The library describes it as a space to express yourself, hang out and be creative. Families needing ASL, CART or other disability-related accommodations can contact programs@denverlibrary.org or 720-865-1111 at least five business days ahead. Woodbury is at 3265 Federal Boulevard, and the listing does not mention registration.
Parent tip: Since the houses are made from craft and upcycled materials, they are for display rather than eating. Request accommodations at least five business days ahead.

Four Mile Historic Park hosts a Victorian-style holiday brunch with Father Christmas on Saturday, December 12. Seated brunch tickets include a welcome hot drink, a buffet with breakfast breads, a cereal bar, egg bites, smashed potatoes, sausage meatballs, bacon and berries, time with Father Christmas, and a roving photo booth that sends pictures to your phone. There are two seatings, at 8:30 am and 11:30 am.
Every ticket also includes tractor rides, a sugar plum donut station, Victorian Christmas crafts, a yule log hunt, house tours and the holiday marketplace. Families who want the activities without the meal can buy a general admission ticket for a fraction of the cost, though it does not include brunch or a photo with Father Christmas. This suits families looking for a festive morning with a historic setting and plenty for kids to do.
Parent tip: Choose a seating time when you buy tickets. General admission is the budget option but skips the meal and the Father Christmas photo.

Columbine Library offers a different Winter Break Fun activity every day of the school holiday, and the December 29 theme is Grinch Slime. Kids can stop by during the two hour afternoon window to make their own batch of slime inspired by everyone's favorite holiday grump.
The library lists the program for preschoolers, school age kids and tweens, and no registration is shown, so it is an easy plan for the slow days between Christmas and New Year's. Slime can get messy, so dress kids in clothes that can handle a little goo. Families who enjoy it can check the library calendar for the other daily winter break themes. It is a free, indoor way to fill an afternoon when kids are restless after the holiday rush.
Parent tip: Dress for mess. The library runs a different winter break activity each day, so check the calendar for more options that week.

Lakewood Library runs a weekly after school Kids Club on Tuesdays, rotating between STEAM activities, crafts, nature exploration and LEGO building. The December 8 session is a craft day focused on making wood peg elves, a simple and charming holiday decoration kids can take home.
The club is designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, and families can drop in whenever they like between 3:30 and 5 pm. There is no registration, but the library notes that space is limited, so arriving early on a busy week is a good idea. The finished elves make a sweet handmade ornament or a small gift for grandparents. Kids Club is free, and families can check the library calendar for the other December Tuesday themes.
Parent tip: Drop in any time during the session, but space is limited, so earlier is better.

Lakewood Library is hosting its 4th Annual Festival of Trees as a Friday evening holiday open house. Visitors can stroll through a festive forest of trees decorated by members of the Lakewood community while enjoying cocoa, cookies and lively music from the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra.
The library calendar lists the event for every age from babies to adults, and it runs from 6 to 8 pm, so it makes a pleasant early evening outing after dinner. Families who want to take part can also submit a tree to be part of the community forest by asking library staff for details. It is free and no registration is listed. Walking among the decorated trees with a warm drink is a calm, low cost holiday tradition that young children can enjoy at their own pace.

Santa visits the Aurora History Museum so children can tell him what they want for Christmas. Families can take a photo with Santa inside Historic Trolley Trailer #610, a restored streetcar on display at the museum. The trolley stays put, so this is a photo visit rather than a ride.
The visit runs from noon to 2 pm on Saturday, December 5. The cost is $5 per family, and the museum asks families to register in advance through Eventbrite using the link on the event page. The museum suggests bringing the whole family and a camera, so plan to take your own photos. The museum is at 15051 East Alameda Parkway. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
