Christmas in Cork begins with the annual Christmas Parade, filling the city streets with light, music, Christmas characters and entertainment. The highlight for children is a very special visit from Santa Claus himself, who switches on Cork's Christmas lights to officially start the celebrations.
The parade takes place on Sunday 15 November from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and is free. Cork City Council says more details, including the route, will be shared in the coming weeks, so check the Christmas in Cork pages or social media before heading in. The wider Christmas in Cork programme then runs in the city centre until 31 December. It is the official start of Christmas in Cork, and the city centre markets open a few days later.
Parent tip: Check the council's Christmas in Cork page for the route closer to the day; it is an evening event, so wrap up warmly.

Fota House on Fota Island becomes Santa's home from 21 November to 22 December. Santa and Mrs Claus are preparing for the most magical night of the year, and the busy elves need children's help to get everything ready so they can earn the honour of joining Santa on his Christmas Eve journey. Each decorated room in the historic house has its own festive storyline to follow.
The visit ends with a special family visit with Santa himself, who invites children into his North Pole library to choose two age-appropriate books as their gift, which makes this one of the best Santa visits around for little readers. It is a traditional, indoor experience in a lovely setting just outside Cork city near Carrigtwohill. Book online through Fota House.
Parent tip: Book early through the Fota House booking site; the gift is two books chosen by your child, so it is perfect for book lovers.
