The story of Christmas in Cape Coral
How Cape Coral celebrates
The Holiday Boat-A-Long began in 1976, when Archie and Edwina Hahn organized Cape Coral's first boat parade. Boat owners decorate their vessels with lights and line up in Bimini Basin before cruising the canals of South Cape Coral, while families along the water host Christmas parties to watch. The other big tradition is the Holiday Festival of Lights on Cape Coral Parkway, a tree lighting run by the Chamber of Commerce that marked its 40th celebration in 2019. Santa arrived on a Cape Coral Fire Department truck that year.
Christmas last year in Cape Coral
On Saturday, December 6, 2025, the Holiday Festival of Lights filled about three-quarters of a mile of Cape Coral Parkway from 4 to 10 p.m. The tree lit at 6:30 p.m. at Big John Plaza, and the night brought a 15-ton snow drift, four stages of live entertainment, a Tiny Tots Train Ride and a free Candy Cane Park. About 20,000 people come each year, and guests were asked to bring food or cash for the Cape Coral Caring Center. Two weeks later, on December 20, the Boat-A-Long returned to Four Freedoms Park, with the parade passing the beach around 7:30 p.m.
Fun facts about Christmas in Cape Coral
The Boat-A-Long can bring out up to 100 boats a year, and 120 boats signed up ahead of time one year in the early 2010s. In 2013 Santa arrived by boat, and Cape Coral Police boats helped manage the canals. The city also holds a tree and menorah lighting at City Hall, where one year's tree stood 50 feet tall. In 2019 a local family handed down the job of decorating the Festival of Lights tree to the next generation, and the mayor said the decorations had spread onto 47th Terrace.
Little trains at Cape Coral Christmas
We did not find a railroad museum in Cape Coral, but small trains are part of its Christmas story. The Holiday Festival of Lights has featured a Tiny Tots Train Ride for young riders, listed in both 2019 and 2025. The city's Holiday Nights on the Lawn at City Hall also lists a trackless train among its attractions for the 2026 season. For little ones who love trains, these short rides are a gentle first taste of the holidays on the rails.

Up to 100 boats take part each year, according to the city's special events coordinator in 2024. In the early 2010s a record 120 boats signed up ahead of time. The parade has long been a draw for boat owners across the city's canals.

Does it snow in Cape Coral at Christmas?
No, real snow does not fall in Cape Coral, but the Holiday Festival of Lights brings it in. The festival has a 15-ton snow drift, so kids who have never seen snow can slide and play in it, along with a free Candy Cane Park nearby.
How can I explain a snow drift in Florida to my kids?
Tell them that Cape Coral is too warm for snow, so the city makes some for one special night. At the Festival of Lights, workers pile up a 15-ton snow drift on Cape Coral Parkway. It is a fun way to talk about how Christmas looks different in warm places.
How does Santa arrive in Cape Coral?
It depends on the event. At the 2019 Festival of Lights, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived on a Cape Coral Fire Department truck. At the Boat-A-Long in 2013, Santa arrived by boat at 6 p.m. before the parade. At City Hall celebrations, kids can take photos with Santa.

Is there a Christmas tree lighting at Cape Coral City Hall?
Yes. Cape Coral holds a tree and menorah lighting at City Hall, where the mayor and City Council flip the switch. One year's tree stood 50 feet tall, with carols by local students, food trucks, kids' crafts and photos with Santa. See our Cape Coral Christmas events guide on this page for this season's details.
What is Holiday Nights on the Lawn?
Holiday Nights on the Lawn is a two-night celebration at Cape Coral City Hall. The 2026 version runs November 27 and 28 and lists a tree and menorah lighting, ice skating, a trackless train, inflatables, vendors and Santa. Each night ends with a holiday movie on a giant inflatable screen.
Why do Cape Coral families watch the boat parade from their yards?
Many Cape Coral homes sit on the city's canals, so the parade passes right behind them. Residents along the route often host Christmas parties to watch the boats go by, waving and taking photos as the lit-up vessels float past. It makes the whole neighborhood part of the show.
How can I explain the boat parade to my toddler?
Tell your toddler that in Cape Coral the boats wear Christmas lights, just like houses do. Families decorate their boats and drift through the canals in a parade on the water. Kids can count boats and spot their favorite lights from the shore at Four Freedoms Park.

Are there little train rides at Cape Coral Christmas celebrations?
Yes. The Holiday Festival of Lights has featured a Tiny Tots Train Ride, listed in both 2019 and 2025, and Holiday Nights on the Lawn lists a trackless train for 2026. We did not find a railroad museum in Cape Coral, so these short rides are the train story for little fans.
Why is Christmas in Cape Coral different from other cities?
Cape Coral celebrates on the water and in the warm air. Its oldest tradition is a boat parade through canals, its biggest festival brings in a 15-ton snow drift, and neighbors watch from their backyards. It is a Florida Christmas with lights reflecting on the canals instead of frost on the grass.
