The story of Christmas in Cairns
Cairns lit a Christmas tree in 2023 that stood about 10 metres tall and was hung with 100 reef-inspired decorations. The city turns 150 in 2026, and its waterfront gets a new light trail.
A 10-metre tree and 100 reef decorations on the Esplanade
The Christmas season in Cairns starts at Lagoon Plaza on the Esplanade, where Council lights a big tree each year. In 2023 it stood about 10 metres tall with 13,000 LED lights and 100 reef-inspired decorations, some a metre long, made by local artists Hayley Gillespie and India Collins.
The second tradition is Carols in the Park at Munro Martin Parklands, Council's big December carols night. Families bring blankets and chairs, local choirs, soloists and dancers perform, and the show is livestreamed free to the Cairns Performing Arts Centre.
Dusty the Christmas Beetle and a snow night in 2025
On Sunday 30 November 2025 the tree went on at 7pm. Dusty the Christmas Beetle and Friends played stage shows at Lagoon Plaza from 4.45pm, and Twilight Christmas Markets ran at Shields Street Plaza from 5pm to 8pm. Snow flurries fell on the Esplanade that night.
Carols in the Park followed on Sunday 14 December, with gates open at 4pm, roaming elves from 4.30pm, more than 20 live performances, Santa and food trucks. In November 2025 fifty local children rode Santa's open-top Tropical Express bus to Smithfield. In 2026 Council's waterfront event is Christmas Light Lane, on 12 evenings from 29 November to 24 December.
Fish garlands, a cassowary cut-out and a 150th birthday
One year the Esplanade decorations were made by local art students on the theme of a tropical Christmas. They included fish garlands, illuminated jellyfish, pelicans nesting on light poles and a cassowary cut-out for photos. A Beach Shack mailbox took letters to Santa, and that tree used 8,000 LED lights.
Cairns was founded in 1876, so 2026 is its 150th year, with a year-long Council program. Out in Gordonvale, the 2023 community carols at Norman Park had a Men's Shed merry-go-round, a nativity photo booth and free face painting, with Santa and Mrs Claus.
Traditions today
- Christmas Tree Light Up: Council switches on the Lagoon Plaza tree on the Esplanade, with free shows before the lights go on.
- Carols in the Park: A Sunday evening in December at Munro Martin Parklands, with choirs, dancers, Santa and food trucks.
- Christmas Light Lane: A waterfront light trail from Lagoon Plaza to the Eastern Events Lawn, on 12 evenings in 2026.
- Indoor carols at CPAC: The park show is livestreamed free to the Cairns Performing Arts Centre, with a Quiet Place and an Auslan interpreter.
- Santa at the shopping centre: Santa arrived at Smithfield Shopping Centre by open-top bus in 2025 and opened a North Queensland photo grotto.
- Gordonvale community carols: A volunteer-run night at Norman Park with Santa, Mrs Claus and free face painting.
A fact for kids
In 2023 Cairns lit a Christmas tree about 10 metres tall, with 13,000 LED lights and 100 reef-inspired decorations.
