Te Manaaki, Auckland's giant Christmas tree, returns to Te Komititanga at the bottom of Queen Street. Celebrations start on Saturday 21 November with the tree lighting and a special live musical performance, and the tree stays up until 4 January.
On Saturday 28 November a candlelight gospel choir performs under the tree, and on Sunday 13 December traditional Japanese drummers bring a thunderous rhythm to the city. From Thursday to Saturday, cheerful Christmas music plays for three minutes at the top of each hour between 6pm and 9pm. It is free and makes an easy stop on a city outing, especially combined with the Queen Street lights. The tree is supported by Auckland Council Events and presented by Heart of the City, Precinct Properties and Auckland Live, so it is very much the city centre's shared Christmas tree.
Parent tip: Visit on a Thursday to Saturday evening between 6pm and 9pm to catch the hourly Christmas music.

It is a gentle first orchestra experience for toddlers and preschoolers, and the short format suits small attention spans. The concerts are proudly part of the Auckland Council whānau of events, and tickets are sold through Auckland Live.
Parent tip: Check which venue your chosen session is at when booking, as performances are split between the Auckland Town Hall and the Bruce Mason Centre, 1 The Promenade, Takapuna.

Now in its 93rd year, the Farmers Santa Parade is the traditional start of Christmas in Auckland. Santa is the star, joined by colourful floats, much-loved characters and a few new arrivals making their Queen Street debut. The route starts at the corner of Mayoral Drive and Cook Street, heads down Mayoral Drive into Queen Street, then along Customs Street East to finish at Britomart Place.
Pre-parade entertainment begins at 12pm and the parade itself starts at 1pm. Straight afterwards, Santa's Party in Aotea Square kicks off at 2.30pm with a special Paddington Bear stage show and more entertainment, so it is easy to make an afternoon of it. The event is free, and if the weather forces a postponement the back-up date is Sunday 6 December 2026.
Parent tip: Get there early to claim a good viewing spot along the route, and pack sunhats, sunscreen and water. The back-up date is Sunday 6 December.

Through December, Auckland Live turns Aotea Square into a free festive hub for tamariki, whānau and visitors. The centrepiece is Swinging Bells, a playful installation where giant bells come alive with light and sound as you swing. Other highlights include hands-on Christmas craft activities, a free outdoor screening of The Nightmare Before Christmas, the community meal Everybody Eats at Christmas, and Battle Chorus Xmas, a mass singalong in the heart of the city.
The square is part of the wider Christmas in the City programme, so you can also wander down Queen Street to see festive installations and Christmas lights. Everything in the square is free to attend and all are welcome, which makes it an easy add-on to a city outing with the kids.
Parent tip: Te Waihorotiu Station is about a two-minute walk away and The Civic Car Park sits directly beneath the square.

For 12 nights in December, MOTAT's museum grounds and heritage buildings are lit up with thousands of sparkling lights, festive music and the big Christmas tree, te rākau kirihimete nui. The event runs on selected Fridays to Mondays from 4 to 21 December, starting at 8pm.
Alongside the lights there are carol singers, outdoor games, a visit with Santa and food to buy, plus lit photo spots designed with event partner La Lumiere. Heritage tram rides also run on the night. Tickets cost $5 to $10, and public sales open on Wednesday 4 November, so it is worth booking early for the weekend dates. The museum describes it as an all-weather venue, which is reassuring if the forecast is mixed, and MOTAT sits about 6 km from central Auckland, close to public transport.
Parent tip: Best parking is at the MOTAT Aviation Display Hall, 200 Meola Road. Evenings start at 8pm, so plan around little ones' bedtimes.

For one weekend in December, Mrs Claus herself joins the crew of Ted Ashby, the Maritime Museum's heritage sailing vessel, for a series of tamariki-friendly sailings on the Waitematā Harbour. Expect lively songs, magical storytelling and plenty of Christmas cheer, and every young passenger receives a special treat.
Sailings leave at 10.30am, 11.30am and 1.30pm on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December, with tickets from $20 per person, booked through the museum. Children under 14 must wear the life jackets supplied by the museum and need to fit the smallest size. For babies under 10 kg, the crew will check whether a safe fit is possible, and boarding may not be allowed if not. The museum is a short walk from the city centre and Waitematā station, and it opens daily from 10am to 5pm.
Parent tip: Contact the museum before booking if you are unsure whether your baby will fit a life jacket. Parking buildings are nearby on Pakenham Street East and Market Lane.

Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park returns to the Auckland Domain for its 32nd year. It is a free evening of live music and entertainment featuring well-known Aotearoa performers alongside emerging talent, and it wraps up with a fireworks finale. You do not need a ticket to get in.
Bring a picnic rug and dinner, or buy something from the Coca-Cola Food Fest vendors on site. The Auckland Domain event is alcohol free, which suits families. The programme starts at 7.30pm, so younger children may enjoy settling in early with a picnic before the show. Organisers suggest leaving dogs at home because of the crowds, loud music and fireworks, although certified assistance dogs are welcome. Programme details, a site map and transport tips are posted on the organiser's Auckland page, and several bus routes, ferries and trains connect with the Domain for an easier trip home.
Parent tip: Public transport is encouraged; paid parking is available in the park and InnerLink and OuterLink buses stop nearby. Leave the dog at home because of the fireworks.

As part of Auckland Live Christmas in Aotea Square, crochet artists Lissy and Rudi Robinson-Cole are running a relaxed craft session where Christmas decorations are the inspiration. Their practice blends toi Māori, bright colour and storytelling, and the workshop welcomes crafters of all ages and skill levels, so little ones can join in alongside older siblings and grown-ups.
The session starts at 11am on Sunday 20 December and is free. It is a nice way to make a homemade ornament for the tree in the last week before Christmas, and you can pair it with the Swinging Bells installation and other festive activities running in the square through December. No booking is mentioned, so simply head to Aotea Square on the morning. The square sits right on Queen Street, with Te Waihorotiu Station about two minutes away and The Civic Car Park directly underneath, which helps with prams and craft supplies.
Parent tip: Part of the free Christmas in Aotea Square programme, so check the other activities on the same day.
