The Nutcracker Tea Party is the Anchorage Classical Ballet Academy's annual holiday fundraiser, held at The Nave on Spenard Road. Families sit down to teas, hot cocoa, finger sandwiches and holiday sweets while dancers perform short scenes from The Nutcracker up close, including the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince.
Children can make holiday crafts, pose at a themed photo booth and listen to a story-time reading of the classic Nutcracker tale. There is also a boutique of Nutcracker-themed gifts and a raffle. Two seatings are offered on the day, from 11:30 am to 1 pm and from 2 to 3:30 pm. Tickets cost $40 to $50 and support the academy's dance programs.
Parent tip: Buy tickets ahead for your preferred seating. It is a nice warm-up for kids who will see the full ballet in December.

Dimond Center in south Anchorage offers free photos with Santa from November 27 through December 24. The mall lists afternoon and evening hours starting at noon, running until 8 pm on Wednesdays through Saturdays and until 7 pm on Sundays, so check the events page for the day you plan to go.
On Friday, November 27 and Saturday, November 28, Santa's reindeer are also at the mall from noon to 4 pm for pictures. Santa asks families to bring non-perishable food donations for the Food Bank of Alaska. Because it is indoors, this is an easy option on a cold or dark December day. Santa's spot is part of the mall's holiday season, which also includes the Holiday Gift Show from mid-November through December 20.
Parent tip: Bring a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank of Alaska. Come on November 27 or 28 between noon and 4 pm to see the reindeer too.

For 36 years the Anchorage Concert Association has presented The Nutcracker as a Thanksgiving weekend tradition. Eugene Ballet performs with young Alaska dancers coordinated by Alaska Dance Theatre, and the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra plays the score live in the Atwood Concert Hall.
Kids follow Clara to the Winter Land and the Land of Sweets and cheer on the Nutcracker Prince as he battles the Mouse King and the Pirate Mice. There are six performances from Friday to Sunday, including afternoon matinees at 2 pm Friday and Saturday and 1 pm Sunday, which work well for younger children. Youth tickets start at $35 at the box office. Audiences of all ages are welcome, and the concert association describes it as a festive family outing.
Parent tip: Choose a matinee for younger kids. Tickets are sold through the Anchorage Concert Association and CenterTix.

Zoo Lights turns the wooded trails of the Alaska Zoo into an evening walk through custom animated light displays, trailside lights and overhead canopies. There is a polar bear bench set up for photos, which makes it an easy spot for a holiday picture with the kids.
The season opens Thanksgiving weekend and runs on Friday to Sunday weekends in early December, then every night from December 18 through January 3, except Christmas Day when the zoo is closed. Hours are 5 to 8 pm. Tickets are $25 for ages 16 and up and $15 for ages 15 and under, with children 2 and under free. Zoo members ages 3 and up get 30 percent off. Brighter Winter Nights turns the Alaska Botanical Garden into an evening winter wonderland with botanical themed light displays, ice luminarias, cozy firepits, a kicksled trail and a model train. Most families spend 45 minutes to an hour on the path. Tea, hot chocolate and cider are sold in the Greenhouse, and you are asked to bring your own mug since no disposable cups are provided.
In early December the garden is open Thursday through Sunday from 5 to 8 pm at $12 per non-member. From December 18 through January 3 it is open every evening except Christmas and New Year's Day, 4:30 to 8:30 pm, at $16. Members and kids 6 and under are free but must still be registered. All tickets must be bought in advance, and last entry is 30 minutes before close. The event is almost entirely outdoors.
Parent tip: Register kids 6 and under even though they are free, and bring a mug for hot drinks. Dress warmly, since nearly everything is outside.

There are also gift vendors, games, photo booths and a food truck area. Admission is $10 at the door for adults, and kids 12 and under get in free, with nothing to buy in advance. The Solstice Tree Tour is an Anchorage winter tradition run by the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage. Local businesses decorate trees along the 2.5 kilometer Mize Loop at Kincaid Park, and for one evening the ski-only loop opens to walkers and snowshoers as well as skiers. Families get free hot chocolate and s'mores, warming barrels and live music.
At the end of the loop, visitors vote for their favorite tree by QR code and get a sticker. Food trucks sell dinner. There is no parking inside Kincaid Park, so free shuttles run from 3:30 to 8:30 pm from the Kulis Drive lot, Dimond High School and Kincaid Elementary, with the last ride into the park at 7:15 pm. Dogs are not allowed.
Parent tip: Wear traction devices on boots since the trail can be slippery, and plan around the shuttle times. Leave the dog at home.

Christmas for the Animals is a family tradition at the Alaska Zoo that dates back to the 1970s. Families bring food donations and stuff the large stockings hung at each animal habitat, and you are welcome to bring a sled, cart or bag to haul gifts to your favorite animals. The zoo posts a list of suitable items, such as frozen fish, unsalted nuts, peanut butter, pet treats and canned pumpkin.
The day also includes storytime and Santa photos in the Discovery Center, caroling by local groups at the bonfire near the old admissions area, the petting zoo and an Artisans Bazaar in Gateway Hall from noon to 6 pm. Stockings come down at 6 pm, and Zoo Lights runs from 5 to 8 pm. Non-members pay regular admission until 5 pm and Zoo Lights rates after that. Members get free Zoo Lights entry this evening.
Parent tip: Check the zoo's list of accepted food donations before you shop, and bring a sled or bag to carry them. Stockings are taken down at 6 pm.

Anchorage Ballet stages its own production of The Nutcracker, set to Tchaikovsky's music, at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts downtown. The ballet company describes daring toy soldiers, sparkling snow and the Sugar Plum Fairy's kingdom as Clara and her Nutcracker Prince travel through dreams to the Land of the Sweets.
There are three performances: Friday, December 18 at 6 pm and Saturday, December 19 at 1 pm and 6 pm. The Saturday matinee is the easiest fit for young children. Tickets start at $40.50 and are sold through the Buy Tickets link on the ballet's page. This is a separate production from the Thanksgiving weekend Nutcracker presented by the Anchorage Concert Association.

The Glenn Massay Theater at Mat-Su College in Palmer opens the holiday season early with the stage musical of Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The story follows the Grinch, whose heart is two sizes too small, as he plots to stop Christmas in Who-ville and ends up learning what the season is really about.
The theater bills it as a heartwarming, fun adventure for the whole family. There are three performances on the first weekend of November: Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 pm and a Sunday matinee at 2 pm. The theater is on the Mat-Su College campus, so the matinee also works as a day trip into the valley.
Parent tip: The Sunday 2 pm matinee is the best fit for young kids. Check the theater website for tickets.
