Halloween Train Rides Near Wyoming (2026)
Wyoming's Halloween train answer for 2026 is short: we found none in the state. The good news for Cheyenne and Laramie is that the border is close, and the Colorado Front Range rides are roughly an hour and a half south. Our Halloween train finder for all 50 states has the full picture; this page is the Wyoming shortcut.
The two best fits for Wyoming kids are both gentle daytime costume rides: the Colorado Railroad Museum's Harvest Haunt Express in Golden, pulled by a coal-burning steam locomotive, and the Georgetown Loop Railroad's Trick or Treat Train, which climbs the Georgetown Loop high bridge. Families in the southwest corner of the state who are headed toward Salt Lake can look at Utah's Heber Valley Railroad, where the evening Halloween Express still has seats but the daytime Pumpkin Train is full. Further down, you will also find Halloween events for kids in Cheyenne, Laramie and Casper that need no drive to Colorado and no train.

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the long drive from Wyoming to a pumpkin train.

Skip the Drive: Halloween Events for Kids in Cheyenne, Laramie and Casper
These three Wyoming Halloween events are free or close to it, and we checked each date on the organizer's own page. None of them is a train ride; they are trunk-or-treat and candy trail afternoons close to home.
Laramie: UW Fall Fest & Safe Treat
University of Wyoming · Festival
The university opens its campus to Laramie families for an afternoon of fall games on Prexy's Pasture, with a pumpkin catapult, carriage rides and s'mores, then moves indoors for Safe Treat, where student organizations hand out candy inside the Wyoming Union. It is free and open to the public. It is a Thursday, so after school pickup is the natural time to go.
Cheyenne: Wild West Trunk or Treat
Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum · Trunk or treat
The Old West Museum in Cheyenne invites families to trick or treat Western style, going car to car past creatively decorated trunks hosted by local nonprofits. It is a short two-hour window with no early entry, so arrive close to 1:00 PM. The page does not say whether museum admission applies, though kids 11 and under get in free either way.
Casper: Trick-or-Treat Trail 2026
The Science Zone · Trick or treat
Casper's hands-on science museum runs a candy trail on Halloween afternoon, with members and local businesses handing out treats at booths and prizes for the best costumes. A calmer trail time from 1:00 to 1:45 PM comes before the open crowd, which helps kids who find busy, loud rooms hard. The 2026 page posts no price, so check before you go.
The closest Halloween trains to Wyoming
Golden, Colorado: Harvest Haunt Express
Pumpkin and costume ride Colorado Railroad Museum
This weekend only, and the easiest Halloween train for Cheyenne families, though the museum's ticket page flagged Saturday as low availability on Oct 14. Timed entries run from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, with trick-or-treating, the museum's Silly Graveyard, a hay bale maze and railcars the museum itself calls not-so-spooky.
Georgetown, Colorado: Trick or Treat Train
Pumpkin and costume ride Georgetown Loop Railroad
The pick for Halloween weekend, and all ten departures were still bookable as of Oct 14. It is billed for all ages, the ride is about 1 hour 15 minutes, costumes are encouraged, each ticketed child gets candy at the end, and there is face painting at Devil's Gate Depot plus a 2026 Halloween Faro Chip keepsake per reservation.
Heber City, Utah: The Halloween Express
Pumpkin and costume ride Heber Valley Railroad
For southwest Wyoming families already headed toward Salt Lake. It is a 90 minute evening round trip to a haunted village the railroad calls Grim Hollow, and the railroad says it is fun and not scary. Heber's daytime Pumpkin Train is sold out for Oct 17 and Oct 24.
Rally’s Spooky Train Ride: Halloween shirts
The tunnel page from the book, Rally on his red seat in the dark, is printed on black shirts in sizes for the whole family, from baby to 5XL. Skip the costume hassle: no masks to fog up, no capes caught in the train door, just a shirt that already says Halloween and layers under a coat on a cold platform. A matching set makes for easy pumpkin train photos. See everything in the Rally shop.

Wind, Altitude and a Costume Over Long Johns
Late October in Wyoming is cold and windy, with highs in the 40s and 50s F, so the walk from the car to the depot is the coldest part of many families' day. Dress kids for the wind first and the costume second.
Colorado's research is blunt about elevation. Golden is usually milder, often sunny in the 60s F by day, but Georgetown sits around 8,500 feet off I-70, where late-October days run colder and snow or icy roads can arrive any week. Pack hats and gloves even for the daytime Trick or Treat Train.
How Spooky Are the Colorado Rides for Wyoming Kids
Neither Colorado pick is a scare ride. Golden's Harvest Haunt Express has railcars the museum labels not-so-spooky and a Silly Graveyard, which tells you the tone, and the whole event runs in daylight. Georgetown's Trick or Treat Train is billed for all ages and ends with candy.
If your child is uneasy about masks or decorations, walk the Golden grounds together before you board, and let them choose whether to step into the haunted railcars. Heber's Halloween Express in Utah runs after dark to a haunted village, but the railroad stresses that it is fun and not scary; the late hour is the bigger hurdle for a preschooler.

When Rally's family gets ready for their trip in our book, Rally is up before the sun, sitting by the suitcase and packing his turtle toy, his green bone and his yellow ball. A Wyoming morning on the way to Georgetown calls for the same kind of packing, plus mittens.
Rally was my mom's idea long before he was a book, and this is her story. For the drive south, grab a stack of Rally pages to color.
Notes for the Drive From Cheyenne and Laramie
- Golden's Harvest Haunt Express is Oct 17 and 18 only, and Saturday showed low availability on Oct 14. Buying online saves $5 per ticket, and the museum says capacity is limited and recommends buying ahead.
- Arrive 30 minutes early in Golden for parking and check-in, as the museum advises.
- Georgetown does not mail or email tickets. Pick up printed tickets at the depot 30 minutes before departure or you cannot board, and the railroad warns that I-70 is very busy this time of year.
- There are no restrooms on the Georgetown train, only at the stations, so plan a stop before boarding.
- As of Oct 14, all ten Georgetown departures (10:00 AM, 11:25 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:25 PM and 3:50 PM on both days) were bookable, with the Oct 31 10:00 AM train the fullest, but Halloween weekend can change quickly.

Not a train, but Laramie has a free Halloween event: the University of Wyoming's Fall Fest and Safe Treat on Thu Oct 22, with a pumpkin catapult and carriage rides from 2:00 PM and trick-or-treating inside the Wyoming Union from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The closest Halloween trains are on the Colorado Front Range, such as Golden's Harvest Haunt Express on Oct 17 and 18.
Where can Rock Springs, Wyoming kids find a Halloween train?
Rock Springs has no Halloween train this year, and Utah's Heber Valley Pumpkin Train is sold out for its last two Saturdays. The southwest Wyoming option with seats is Heber's evening Halloween Express, a 90 minute ride at 7:00 PM that the railroad calls fun and not scary, from $35. Our research lists no drive time from Rock Springs, so compare it with Colorado on a map.
Are there Halloween train rides near Gillette, Wyoming?
Gillette has no Halloween train this year, and our research has no drive time from Gillette to any ride. The nearest trains for most of Wyoming are on the Colorado Front Range: Golden's Harvest Haunt Express on Oct 17 and 18 and Georgetown's Trick or Treat Train on Oct 30 and 31. Both are daytime costume rides that suit young kids.
Is Golden's Harvest Haunt Express worth the drive from Cheyenne?
Yes, for families with young kids. It is about 1 hour 30 minutes to the Front Range for a full morning: a steam train ride, trick-or-treating, a Silly Graveyard, a hay bale maze and not-so-spooky railcars. Timed entries run 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM on Oct 17 and 18, and Saturday was low on tickets as of Oct 14. Online tickets save $5 each.
Is the Georgetown Loop Trick or Treat Train worth it from Wyoming?
If you can make Oct 30 or 31, it is a memorable Halloween outing. The train climbs the Georgetown Loop high bridge, each ticketed child gets candy, and there is face painting at Devil's Gate Depot. Is Heber Valley's Halloween Express a good idea from southwest Wyoming?
It can be if Salt Lake is already on your route. The railroad calls the 7:00 PM ride fun and not scary, and it runs 90 minutes round trip to a haunted village at Grim Hollow. General admission is $35, lap toddlers $5. October 16 is sold out, and Heber's daytime Pumpkin Train is full, so check the operator site first.
Can Wyoming kids wear costumes on the Colorado Halloween trains?
Yes. The Colorado Railroad Museum encourages costumes for trick-or-treating at the Harvest Haunt Express, and the Georgetown Loop Railroad says costumes are encouraged on its Trick or Treat Train. Put the costume over warm layers, because Wyoming wind and Georgetown's 8,500-foot elevation make late October mornings cold, and snow is possible in the mountains.
Which Colorado Halloween train is best for a Wyoming toddler?
Golden's Harvest Haunt Express is the easiest. It is the shortest drive from Cheyenne, runs in daylight, and kids under 2 ride free. The Georgetown train is also gentle, but there are no restrooms on board, and the mountain drive adds time. Neither railroad has posted a stroller policy in our research, so check the operator site.
