Halloween Train Rides in Maine (2026)

In Kennebunkport, a museum that calls itself the first and largest electric railway museum in the world is running its 28th annual Pumpkin Patch Trolley through October 18, then switching to trick-or-treat trolley days the next weekend. Six Maine Halloween rail events still have dates on or after October 14: five gentle pumpkin and costume outings and one haunted night ride, the Ghost Train in Phillips, which runs non-scary Little Ghost Train trips first for small kids. Our map of Halloween train rides across the country covers the rest of the region.

The rides spread from the southern coast to the western mountains. Southern Maine families have the two Seashore Trolley Museum events in Kennebunkport, about 35 minutes from Portland, plus the narrow gauge pumpkin train in Alna and a Halloween Day SPOOKtacular in Boothbay. Down East, the Downeast Scenic Railroad's Pumpkin Train boards at Washington Junction in Hancock, about 35 minutes from Bangor.

The short version

  • Pumpkin and costume rides: From Portland, the Pumpkin Patch Trolley in Kennebunkport is about 35 minutes away for its final days, Oct 16 to 18, and every guest picks a pumpkin.
  • The same museum's Happy Trolleyween follows on Oct 23 to 25, with unlimited trolley rides and trick-or-treat stations for $15 a person.
  • From Bangor and Down East, the Downeast Scenic Pumpkin Train boards in Hancock, about 35 minutes away, on Oct 17 and 18 at 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM.
  • For a steam train and a hayride, the Pumpkin Pickin' Train in Alna runs Oct 17 and 24, about 55 minutes from Portland, but plan for a 2 hour 40 minute outing or longer.
  • On Halloween itself, the Railway SPOOKtacular in Boothbay runs 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, $10 at the gate.
  • Haunted rides: The Ghost Train in Phillips runs one night, Oct 17, about 2 hours from Portland; choose the 5:00 to 6:00 PM Little Ghost Train trips for young kids and the later runs for kids who want actors and scares.

Most Maine dates fall on Oct 17, 18 and 24, so pick your weekend first and the ride second.

A dark tunnel, a brave corgi. Bring Rally along.

In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi rides into a dark tunnel, gets a little scared, and comes out to a big bright light and happy cheers. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to a Maine pumpkin train.

This one is a trolley, not a steam train: kids ride a vintage electric streetcar for 30 minutes out to a pumpkin patch, run by the Seashore Trolley Museum, which describes itself as the first and largest electric railway museum in the world. This is the museum's 28th year doing it, and every guest, grown-ups included, picks a pumpkin at the patch.

Friday Oct 16, Saturday Oct 17 and Sunday Oct 18 are the final days, with eight departures from the Visitors Center between 9:45 AM and 3:00 PM. Back at the Visitors Center there is pumpkin painting and crafts, plus food trucks on the weekend. Adults are $17, kids 3 to 5 are $9, and under 3 ride free, before Eventbrite fees.

Happy Trolleyween is the Seashore Trolley Museum's season finale, and it is less a single ride than a trick-or-treat day on rails. Your timed ticket buys unlimited heritage trolley rides during your visit, with trick-or-treat stations spread across the campus (the museum says adults can trick-or-treat too), a photo scavenger hunt and a costume contest run on social media.

Kids can also hunt for a hidden lollipop ghost, which enters the family in a raffle for a 2027 museum membership. It runs Friday through Sunday, Oct 23 to 25, with entry from 9:30 AM and the last trolley at 3:45 PM. Tickets are $15 a person and children 2 and under are free.

Phillips: Ghost Train and Little Ghost Train on the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad

Next: Sat Oct 17Best for: Older kids who like spookyFrom $10Dates left: Oct 17

Maine's one haunted ride runs for a single night on a two-foot narrow gauge line in the western mountains. On Saturday, Oct 17, the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad sends trains through woods lit with jack-o-lanterns, and on the main Ghost Train, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, costumed actors try to scare riders.

Families with small children have a better fit: three Little Ghost Train runs between 5:00 and 6:00 PM skip the actors and are meant for very young kids. Tickets are $10, timed and online only, with limited capacity. Park at the Phillips Area Community Center and take the shuttle bus to the station. We could not check ticket status, so look at the operator site before you drive.

On Halloween morning, the Railway Village Museum in Boothbay turns its recreated village into a trick-or-treat route. Kids come in costume with a bag, collect treats at community tables, play carnival games and ride the museum's narrow gauge train, all included with admission. The museum bills it as Halloween for the kids, with nothing scary on the program.

It runs Saturday, Oct 31, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Admission is $10 for ages 4 and up, $5 for members and free for 3 and under, sold at the gate only, so there is nothing to book ahead. The event page does not list a street address or parking details, so check the operator site before you go.

Rally’s Spooky Train Ride: Halloween shirts

The tunnel page from the book, Rally on his red seat in the dark, is printed on black shirts in sizes for the whole family, from baby to 5XL. Skip the costume hassle: no masks to fog up, no capes caught in the train door, just a shirt that already says Halloween and layers under a coat on a cold platform. A matching set makes for easy pumpkin train photos. See everything in the Rally shop.

Mid October in Maine: Frosty Mornings and a Chilly Open Trolley

Maine in mid to late October usually means afternoon highs in the 50s and mornings down in the 30s. Most of the remaining rides run in daylight, but a morning trolley out to the pumpkin patch can feel close to winter, and open trolley cars let the wind straight through. Plan on hats, mittens and a real jacket for small kids even if the afternoon turns pleasant.

Where you ride changes things too. Coastal Kennebunkport and Boothbay tend to be milder than inland Maine, while Down East around Hancock runs colder and can see frost on these weekend mornings. The Phillips Ghost Train is the cold one: it runs after the roughly 5:50 PM sunset in the western mountains, so dress kids for a winter evening.

Little Ghost Train or Pumpkin Trolley: Maine Options for a Nervous Three-Year-Old

If your child is nervous about Halloween in general, most of Maine's rides are easy picks. The Seashore Trolley Museum's pumpkin trolley and Trolleyween days, the Downeast Scenic Pumpkin Train, the WW&F steam train to SeaLyon Farm and the Boothbay SPOOKtacular all run in daylight, with no actors or dark stretches mentioned by the operators.

The one exception is Phillips. On the main Ghost Train after 6:00 PM, costumed actors try to scare riders in the dark woods, which is too much for most preschoolers. The railroad's answer is the Little Ghost Train, three runs between 5:00 and 6:00 PM with the jack-o-lanterns and no actors. If you go, tell your child ahead of time that the woods will be dark but full of glowing pumpkins, and hold hands for the shuttle ride.

Watercolor of Rally the corgi dreaming about his toy turtle, green bone and yellow ball
From Rally Takes the Train, watercolor by Leslie Dunn.

In our book, Rally wakes up before everyone, sees the suitcase, and packs his turtle toy, his green bone and his yellow ball. I think of that page for a Maine pumpkin morning, when it can be in the 30s and the trolley is open to the wind. Pack the mittens the night before, the way Rally would, and slip in our Rally coloring sheets for the drive up the coast.

My mom dreamed up Rally and his grand-paw-rents, and why I finally wrote her story down is something I still think about on every train.

What Maine Parents Should Know Before Booking a Halloween Ride

  • The Pumpkin Patch Trolley's final days are Oct 16, 17 and 18, and every guest picks a pumpkin. The next weekend, Oct 23 to 25, the same museum switches to Happy Trolleyween at $15 a person.
  • The Downeast Scenic Pumpkin Train boards at Washington Junction in Hancock, not in downtown Ellsworth. Pick up prepaid tickets at the booth, and note that kids 16 and under must ride with an adult 18 or older.
  • The WW&F Pumpkin Pickin' Train takes 2 hours 40 minutes or more, pumpkins cost extra, pets are not allowed at SeaLyon Farm, and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated for this event.
  • For the Phillips Ghost Train, park at the Phillips Area Community Center and take the shuttle. Tickets are online only with limited capacity, and choose a 5:00 to 6:00 PM Little Ghost Train time for small kids.
  • The Boothbay SPOOKtacular on Oct 31 sells admission at the gate only, $10 for ages 4 and up, so bring cash or a card and a trick-or-treat bag.
  • Open trolleys are chilly and Down East mornings can bring frost. Pack hats, mittens and a blanket even for a daytime ride.
  • If none of these dates work, Conway Scenic's Halloween Express in North Conway, New Hampshire runs Oct 24 and 25, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Portland.

When Maine's Rides Are Done: Pumpkin Trains in New Hampshire and Massachusetts

The closest later October ride for Portland families is in New Hampshire. Conway Scenic Railroad's Halloween Express in North Conway is a family pumpkin style ride on Oct 24 and 25, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Portland, which makes it an easy late October add-on for families who missed the Maine dates. Our New Hampshire Halloween train guide also covers a Pumpkin Festival Express in Laconia.

Massachusetts is a bigger trip from Maine, but the Hoosac Valley Train Ride in Adams runs gentle pumpkin patch rides through Oct 25, and it is about 2 hours 50 minutes even from Boston, so it suits a family already headed that way. Details are on our page of Massachusetts pumpkin trains.

A train book for the ride

Maine kids who just want a big train and no costumes can ride down to Boston and pick up the Northeast Regional with little ones for a very different kind of day on the rails.

Maine Parents' Questions About Pumpkin Trolleys and Halloween Trains

What Halloween events are there for kids in Kennebunkport, Maine?

Kennebunkport has two family Halloween events at the Seashore Trolley Museum. The 28th annual Pumpkin Patch Trolley makes its last runs Oct 16, 17 and 18, a 30-minute trolley ride to a patch where every guest picks a pumpkin, with adults at $17 and kids 3 to 5 at $9. Then Happy Trolleyween runs Oct 23 to 25, with unlimited trolley rides and trick-or-treat stations for $15 a person.

What Halloween events for kids are there in Hancock, Maine?

One family Halloween event in Hancock is the Downeast Scenic Railroad's Pumpkin Train, which boards at Washington Junction on Saturday Oct 17 and Sunday Oct 18. The gentle ride lasts about an hour, stops at the pumpkin patch so children can pick a pumpkin, and hands out stickers and snacks. Departures are 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM; adults pay $27 and kids $15.

Is there anything to do for Halloween in Ellsworth, Maine with young kids?

Ellsworth's Halloween train is the Downeast Scenic Railroad's Pumpkin Train, which rides out to Ellsworth Falls and back on Saturday Oct 17 and Sunday Oct 18. Note that it boards just outside town at Washington Junction in Hancock. The hour-long trip stops at a pumpkin patch so kids can pick a pumpkin, with departures at 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Children 12 and under are $15.

Are there Halloween events for families in Alna, Maine this October?

One is the WW&F Railway Museum's Pumpkin Pickin' Train, a two-foot narrow gauge steam train from Sheepscot station to SeaLyon Farm, where a hayride takes you to the pumpkin patch. It runs Saturday, Oct 17 and Saturday, Oct 24, with trains from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Adults are $29.75 and kids 4 to 15 are $19.75, with pumpkins sold separately. Plan on at least 2 hours 40 minutes.

What is there to do for Halloween in Phillips, Maine with little kids?

Phillips has the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad's Ghost Train on Saturday, Oct 17. For little kids, the Little Ghost Train runs between 5:00 and 6:00 PM ride through jack-o-lantern woods without the actors, while the main Ghost Train from 6:00 to 8:30 PM is meant to scare. Tickets are $10, online only, and riders park at the community center for a shuttle.

Is there a Halloween event for kids in Boothbay, Maine on October 31?

Yes. The Railway Village Museum in Boothbay holds its Railway SPOOKtacular on Saturday, Oct 31, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Kids wear costumes, trick-or-treat at community tables, play carnival games and ride the museum's narrow gauge train. Admission is $10 for ages 4 and up and free for 3 and under, paid at the gate. The street address is not on the event page, so check the operator site.

Does the Seashore Trolley Museum's pumpkin ride actually stop at a pumpkin patch?

Yes, the Pumpkin Patch Trolley in Kennebunkport carries families on a 30-minute vintage electric trolley ride out to a pumpkin patch, and every guest, adults included, picks a pumpkin there. Back at the Visitors Center there is pumpkin painting and crafts, and food trucks on the weekend. As of October 14, the final rides are Oct 16, 17 and 18, from 9:45 AM to 3:00 PM.

What are Halloween things to do with kids near Portland, Maine this month?

The closest Halloween rides to Portland are at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, about 35 minutes south: the Pumpkin Patch Trolley through Oct 18 and Happy Trolleyween on Oct 23 to 25. About 55 minutes away, the WW&F steam train in Alna runs to a pumpkin patch on Oct 17 and 24, and Boothbay's Railway SPOOKtacular, about 1 hour 10 minutes away, fills Halloween morning.

Is there a pumpkin train near Bangor, Maine?

Yes, the Downeast Scenic Railroad's Pumpkin Train boards at Washington Junction in Hancock, about 35 minutes from Bangor, on Saturday Oct 17 and Sunday Oct 18. It is a gentle hour-long ride with a stop at the pumpkin patch so kids can pick one, at 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Adults are $27 and children 12 and under are $15. All six departures were on sale as of October 14.

Can kids wear Halloween costumes on the Seashore Trolley Museum's Pumpkin Patch Trolley?

The museum has not posted a costume rule for the Pumpkin Patch Trolley, so check the operator site. For Happy Trolleyween on Oct 23 to 25, costumes are clearly welcome, since the day includes trick-or-treat stations and a costume contest on social media. Either way, plan the costume to fit over a warm coat, because Kennebunkport mornings this time of year can be in the 30s.

Is the Downeast Scenic Railroad Pumpkin Train too scary for a two-year-old?

No scare elements are listed, so it should be fine for most two-year-olds. The railroad describes it as a family ride in daylight, with a pumpkin patch stop, stickers and free snacks on board. The bigger risks for a toddler are the noise of a real train and a cold Down East morning, so bring ear covers if your child is sound sensitive and dress in layers.

Can we still get Maine pumpkin train tickets for this weekend?

Yes, for most rides. As of October 14, the Pumpkin Patch Trolley in Kennebunkport was on sale for Oct 16, 17 and 18, all six Downeast Scenic departures on Oct 17 and 18 were open, and the WW&F Pumpkin Pickin' Train listed Oct 17 on sale. Ticket status for the Phillips Ghost Train on Oct 17 could not be checked, so look at the operator's booking page first.

When does the Pumpkin Patch Trolley in Kennebunkport end this year?

The Pumpkin Patch Trolley ends Sunday, October 18. Its final weekend covers Friday Oct 16, Saturday Oct 17 and Sunday Oct 18, with eight departures a day from 9:45 AM to 3:00 PM. The museum is not done with Halloween, though: Happy Trolleyween follows on Oct 23, 24 and 25, with unlimited trolley rides and trick-or-treat stations for $15 a person.

What should kids wear on an open trolley in Maine in October?

Dress small kids as if it were early winter. Mid October mornings in Maine often start in the 30s and highs reach only the 50s, and an open trolley moving through the woods feels colder still. A hat, mittens, a fleece under a jacket and a blanket for the lap are sensible. Down East around Ellsworth can see frost, while coastal Kennebunkport is usually a little milder.

Did we miss the Great Pumpkin Train in Portland, Maine?

Probably. Our research found the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad's Great Pumpkin Train ran on October 10 and 11, and the railroad's ticket listing shows only regular rides after that, so check the operator site. Portland families still have the Pumpkin Patch Trolley in Kennebunkport, about 35 minutes away, through Oct 18, and Happy Trolleyween at the same museum on Oct 23 to 25.

Are there any Maine Halloween trains left after October 18?

Yes. The Seashore Trolley Museum's Happy Trolleyween runs Oct 23 to 25 in Kennebunkport, the WW&F Pumpkin Pickin' Train in Alna has one more date on Oct 24, and the Railway SPOOKtacular in Boothbay runs on Halloween morning, Oct 31. All three are gentle family events. Across the line, Conway Scenic's Halloween Express in North Conway, New Hampshire runs Oct 24 and 25.

Is there a scary or haunted Halloween train for older kids in Maine?

Yes, for one night. The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad's Ghost Train in Phillips runs on Oct 17 from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, with costumed actors trying to scare riders in woods lit by jack-o-lanterns. Tickets are $10, timed and online only. Younger siblings can ride the non-scary Little Ghost Train runs between 5:00 and 6:00 PM the same evening.

Can we bring a stroller to the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport?

The museum has not posted a stroller policy, so check the operator site before you go. Vintage trolleys usually mean steps to board, so a baby carrier is the safer plan for infants. If you do bring a stroller for the museum grounds, ask staff where to leave it before you board the pumpkin patch trolley, and keep a blanket handy for the chilly ride.
