Christmas Train Rides in Maine (2026)
Maine does holiday trains the small, hands-on way. Portland’s licensed Polar Express runs on a two-foot narrow-gauge line along the waterfront, the Boothbay Railway Village builds its North Pole inside a museum village, Kennebunkport has Santa driving a trolley, and in Alna a tiny steam train carries families to a Christmas market by a bonfire. Most of these sell out, some within weeks. Our national Polar Express and Christmas train guide lists the rest of New England.

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum runs Maine’s licensed Polar Express on its two-foot gauge line along Portland’s Eastern Promenade, and it is the museum’s biggest fundraiser of the year, staffed by volunteers. The show starts inside the Ocean Gateway Marine Terminal, where actors set the scene, then families board nine historic coaches decked out for the holidays. The conductor hands out golden tickets, chefs serve hot chocolate and a cookie, and Santa boards at the North Pole with the first gift of Christmas.
The season is long, from the weekend before Thanksgiving to December 28, with daily trains in the days around Christmas. Be on board at least 20 minutes before departure; the train leaves exactly on time and cannot wait. First Class adds a limited-edition ceramic mug.

The Boothbay Railway Village is a whole small town of old buildings and narrow-gauge track, and its North Pole Express uses all of it. Kids start in the 1912 Freeport Station, writing a letter to Santa by the wood stove, then ride through the village in a classic coach or in the open-air Little Red Caboose No. 551, built in 1904. At Thorndike Station, the North Pole, Santa jumps aboard and every child gets a keepsake.
Back at the station there is a hot cocoa bar, crafts and treats in the Town Hall, a s’mores kit by the fire pit and a scavenger hunt. Tickets are sold online only and every train sells out. Arrive 15 minutes early, since a missed train means standby. Car seats and strollers are not allowed on board, and wheelchairs fit only in the open car, with advance notice.

The Seashore Trolley MuseumThe Seashore Trolley Museum is the oldest and largest electric railway museum in the world, and its holiday trickrsquo;s holiday trick is putting Santa at the controls. After story time, a decorated trolley rolls up with Santa driving, and families board for a heated 30-minute ride on the museum’s own line, sipping hot chocolate and ringing jingle bells. Afterward there are s’mores by the fire pit, weather permitting, and the Maine Central model railroad.
It runs only three days, seats are limited and pajamas are encouraged. The museum warns that a past year sold out in October, so buy now if you want it.

During Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude festival, the museum dresses its trolleys in live holiday greens and runs 25-minute rides through its wooded campus. Admission includes hot chocolate, marshmallows to roast at the outdoor fire pit, the exhibits and the model railroad building, and Santa is on campus for photos on certain afternoons.
The museum points out that these are real trolleys on a real railroad about three miles from downtown, not the trolley-styled buses that run in town. It is a calmer, cheaper option than Santa's Magical Trolley Ride, and a Mobilift helps riders with mobility needs board.

The WW&F Railway Museum runs two-foot gauge steam trains in the Sheepscot Valley, and its Victorian Christmas is pure Maine. From Sheepscot station, a 15-minute ride through pine woods and farmland reaches Alna Center, where Santa visits every child, kids make an ornament, there is a bonfire and hot chocolate, and the SeaLyon Christmas Market fills a big pavilion. After 40 minutes the train takes you back.
The museum alternates steam and diesel trains, and families who ride out behind the diesel come home behind steam, so everyone gets a steam ride. Last year adults paid $20.25 and youth $9.75. Boarding takes two or three steps and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated. The event runs rain or snow.
