- On STM paratransit, service dogs must be on a leash, and you must mention the dog when you book.

Emotional support dogs: The STM does not mention emotional support animals; they follow the pet dog rules (métro off-peak with leash and muzzle, enclosed carrier on buses). Our service dog guide explains the difference.
Tips for riding STM Montreal métro with kids and a dog
- Bring a muzzle the dog is already used to; it must stay on from the time you enter the station until you leave.
- Use elevators or stairs instead of escalators and skip the front car, which the STM reserves for school groups, daycares, riders with disabilities and cyclists.
- The REM, exo trains and STM buses each have different dog rules, so check the rule for every leg; for example exo trains require a closed carrier.
A page from Rally's ride
The scariest page in Rally's book is the tunnel: dark, loud, nothing to see, until a bright light and happy cheers on the other side. Underground stretches can rattle a nervous dog the same way. Talking through Rally's tunnel with kids first helps everyone. The tunnel page is in our free coloring and activity pack.
Questions about dogs on STM Montreal métro
Can I bring my dog on the Montreal métro?
Yes, at set times. One leashed, muzzled dog per rider is allowed on weekdays before 7 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and after 6 p.m., all day on weekends and holidays, and all day every day from May 17 to Aug 15, 2027. The leash can be no longer than 125 cm and the dog must stay off the seats.
Does my dog need a muzzle on the STM métro?
Yes. The STM requires pet dogs to wear a muzzle at all times in the métro. Other pets that are not in an enclosed cage or bag must also wear a muzzle. A dog fully inside an enclosed carrier is treated like other pets in a closed bag or cage.
Can big dogs ride the Montreal métro?
Yes, the STM sets no size or weight limit for leashed dogs in the métro. Any dog must be muzzled, on a leash of 125 cm or less, on the floor rather than a seat, and limited to one per customer. Large dogs are not allowed on STM buses unless they fit in a bag or enclosed cage.
Can I take my dog on an STM bus?
Only in a bag or enclosed cage. The STM's leashed-dog rules apply to the métro only. On buses, dogs and other animals must be in a bag or an enclosed cage. Montreal's city council voted in 2025 to pilot dogs on buses, but the STM page does not list any bus pilot yet.
Are emotional support dogs allowed on the STM?
