Whippany runs one of the longest Polar Express seasons in the country, starting November 1 and running almost every day until December 30. The Morristown & Erie Railway and Rail Events Productions stage the full show: car hosts punch golden tickets, dancing chefs serve hot chocolate and Walker’s Shortbread, everyone reads along with the book, and Santa boards with the silver bell. There is no outdoor North Pole set here; Santa comes to you.

Coach seats in restored commuter coaches face the center of the car; First Class rides in 1940s coaches and comes with a ceramic mug. Arrive about an hour before showtime, since the box office closes at showtime and late guests cannot board. A per-car parking pass is added at checkout. Every child gets a souvenir golden ticket and a handcrafted sleigh bell, and Santa and Mrs. Claus are on board. At Ringoes Station there is a layover with a cookie and hot cocoa for everyone, operating model trains, a small railroad museum, a photo booth family picture with Santa delivered digitally, and a mailbox for letters to Santa. The railroad is clear that it is not the Polar Express.

There are no restrooms at Flemington Station, and the ones at Ringoes are down a staircase, so plan ahead. Strollers and car seats are not recommended. The train is heated but the stations are open to the weather.

Once a year the Tri-State Railway Historical Society, a volunteer group, charters an NJ Transit train for Ride With Santa!, its biggest fundraiser. The hour-long trip runs from the Wayne/Route 23 Transit Center along the Montclair-Boonton Line to Denville and back, with musicians singing carols, costumed characters, Mrs. Claus and Santa, who gives every child a small gift, a candy cane and an activity book.

Because it uses modern NJ Transit cars, it is the most accessible Santa train in the state, with a high-level platform reached by a ramp. Your ticket assigns a car but not a seat. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early; the train cannot be held. It runs only on December 5.

The New Jersey Museum of Transportation runs the Pine Creek Railroad, a small narrow-gauge line in Allaire State Park, and its December Santa trains are a Monmouth County tradition. Santa rides along and talks to every child on a short trip through the woods, and last year the trains ran on Thanksgiving weekend and December Saturdays, with day and night trains.

No 2026 dates were up on the museum's site in mid-October. It is the shortest and least expensive Santa ride at the Shore, which makes it a good fit for toddlers. Check the special events page in November.
