Heartland Flyer With Kids: A Trip Plan for Every Stop
Four hours, two states, one river, and a double-decker train with the seats upstairs. The Heartland Flyer is the right size for a first real train trip: long enough to feel like going somewhere, short enough that nobody has to sleep on it. It leaves Oklahoma City at 8:25am, crosses the Arbuckle Mountains and the Red River, and pulls into Fort Worth at lunchtime, with a steam engine and a toy museum in the middle if you want to break it up. My son was two the first time we rode it, and he spent the Arbuckles standing on his seat with both hands on the glass. Below is every stop, what is at each one, and which to ride through.
By Kelsey Lizee Cecil. Times are approximate from the fall 2026 timetable; checked against Amtrak and each attraction in October 2026. Hours change; read the "know before you go" notes. If you only have one day
- With a toddler: Oklahoma City to Norman.Twenty-two minutes on the upstairs level, a depot to look at, ice cream on Main Street, and a car or bus home. Jump to Norman.
- Ages 4 to 8: Oklahoma City to Pauls Valley. An hour on the train, a 1911 steam engine beside the depot, the Toy and Action Figure Museum, a park, and the evening train home. Jump to Pauls Valley.
- The big one: the whole thing to Fort Worth. The Arbuckles, the Red River, lunch in Sundance Square and the 4pm cattle drive in the Stockyards. Sleep there and ride back at 5:25pm the next day. Jump to Fort Worth.

Three things to know. First, there is one train each way a day, so every stop is a full-day commitment: off the southbound in the morning, back on the northbound in the evening, or a hotel. Second, seats are not assigned and the train is only two or three coaches, so be at the station 30 minutes early for upstairs seats together. Third, there is no checked baggage and only a small cafe, so pack breakfast, lunch and the stroller you can carry. Alerts are on the Heartland Flyer page on Amtrak (opens in a new tab).
Tickets, the Superliner stairs with a toddler, bathrooms, strollers and what to pack are all in our Heartland Flyer parent guide. This page is the fun part: where to get off and what to do when you do.
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, Trains 821 and 822 are cancelled for planned track work and buses 3821 and 3822 run the same trips between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth. Amtrak had not posted bus times when we checked; look in the Amtrak app. If the train ride is the point, move it to Saturday or Monday. The train itself is funded through 2027, so this is a one-day change, not a sign of anything.
Stop 1 of 7OKCTrain 821 leaves about 8:25am; Train 822 arrives about 9:25pm
Oklahoma City Santa Fe Depot

The Heartland Flyer leaves Oklahoma City at 8:25am from a 1934 Art Deco depot with a metal and glass sculpture over the west door made of wheels, pistons and cow catchers, which is a good five minutes of looking while you wait. Bricktown, with its canal boats and the ballpark, is across the tracks, and the streetcar stops at the station. The northbound gets in at 9:25pm, so this is a start-in-the-morning station: breakfast in a bag, the platform early for the pick of the upstairs seats.
Find the wheels and the pistons in the sculpture over the door, then the upstairs window seats as soon as the doors open.

Fly or drive in the day before: Science Museum Oklahoma, Bricktown's water taxi, dinner on the canal, a downtown hotel, and the 8:25am train south.
Snack stop: Bricktown's bakeries and candy shops, five minutes away; nothing opens before the train, so bring breakfast.
Out the window: Leaving southbound the train passes the ballpark and the Bricktown canal, then the river, then the suburbs thinning out to Norman in 20 minutes.
No checked baggage anywhere on this route; carry-on only. Seats are not assigned, so be at the station by 8am for seats together upstairs. The Thruway bus from Wichita and Newton arrives about an hour before the train.
Stop 2 of 7NORSouthbound about 8:45am; northbound about 8:50pm
Norman
The university town, 22 minutes from Oklahoma City, and the shortest first train ride in this part of the country. The 1909 brick and limestone depot is downtown, with Main Street's shops a block away and a park with a playground ten minutes on foot. The thing to see is the Sam Noble Museum on campus, three miles out by car or bus, with the largest Apatosaurus on display anywhere and a children's Discovery Room. The catch is the ride home: the northbound does not come through until 8:50pm, so a train there and a car or bus back is how most families do it.
The dinosaur hall at Sam Noble: an Apatosaurus so long you cannot see both ends from one spot, and a Pentaceratops skull taller than a grown-up.
Right off the platform
- at stopThe 1909 depot: a waiting room with restrooms, open around the trains; no ticket office.
- 2 minMain Street Norman: a bookstore, a toy store, ice cream and coffee.

Half a day between trains
- Southbound: off at 8:45am, Main Street for coffee and a bakery, the park, and a ride home by car or bus.

A Norman day: Sam Noble in the morning by cab, lunch on Campus Corner, Andrews Park, and the northbound home at 8:50pm, or a car.
Snack stop: Main Street's bakeries and ice cream, two minutes from the platform.
Out the window: Flat farmland south of town, then the Canadian River's sandy bed, wide and mostly dry, just before Purcell.
Norman has no ticket office; buy tickets online. On football Saturdays the town is full and the train is popular; book ahead.

Purcell
Where two Santa Fe lines met in 1887 and the town calls itself the Heart of Oklahoma. The train crosses the South Canadian River just north of the stop, which is the thing to watch for. A small platform near downtown, and no reason to get off on a day with only one train each way.
The river bridge: a wide bed of sand with a thin ribbon of water in it, unless it has rained.

- 10 minPurcell's Main Street and a small park.
Half a day between trains
- Stay aboard.

Snack stop: None at the station.
Out the window: Pecan groves and pasture, then the first low hills.
Stop 4 of 7PVLSouthbound about 9:25am; northbound about 8:05pm
Pauls Valley

The best stop in Oklahoma for a kid. The 1905 wooden Santa Fe depot is a free history museum, and next to it sits steam engine No. 1951, built in 1911, with a red caboose behind it. Two blocks away is the Toy and Action Figure Museum, which is exactly what it sounds like: thousands of figures, a hands-on play area and a bedroom with action figures on every surface. The southbound arrives at 9:25am and the northbound leaves at 8:05pm, so this is a long day in a small town, but a four-year-old will not complain.
The Collector's Bedroom at the Toy and Action Figure Museum, then climbing on the step of the steam engine outside the depot.

- 15 minWacker Park, with a playground, a pool in summer and shade.
- at stopField's Pies, the pecan pie bakery, by car on the edge of town.
Half a day between trains
- Southbound: off at 9:25am, the depot museum, the steam engine, the toy museum when it opens, lunch downtown.

A Pauls Valley day: the engine and the depot, the toy museum, lunch, Wacker Park's playground, a pie, and the northbound at 8:05pm with everyone asleep by Norman.
Snack stop: A cafe and a drugstore soda counter on the main street, five minutes from the platform.
Out the window: The Washita River and then the land starting to rise toward the Arbuckles over the next hour.
The toy museum keeps weekend-only public hours from September through February, with weekday tours by appointment; check before you promise it. The 50 minutes from here to Ardmore is the longest gap between stops, so do bathrooms first.
Stop 5 of 7ADMSouthbound about 10:15am; northbound about 7:10pm
Ardmore
The stop after the Arbuckle Mountains, which the train crosses in the hour before Ardmore southbound: real hills, rock cuts and creeks after an hour of flat. The 1917 depot is downtown with Depot Park beside it, where locomotive No. 1108 is parked, the engine that helped bring a relief train from Texas after a 1915 explosion in town. Main Street is a block away. Lake Murray, with a beach and a stone tower, is ten miles south by car.
The Arbuckles from the upstairs windows before the stop, then a climb on the engine in Depot Park.

Snack stop: Main Street has a cafe and a candy shop, five minutes from the platform.
Out the window: Southbound: the hills flatten, then in about 30 minutes the Red River, the state line, on a long bridge.
Ardmore has no ticket office; tickets online. Turner Falls, the big swimming hole in the Arbuckles, is 25 miles north by car and crowded on summer weekends.
Stop 6 of 7GLESouthbound about 11:05am; northbound about 6:30pm
Gainesville
The first Texas stop, five miles south of the Red River, at a 1902 brick depot with a museum on the ground floor and a rebuilt Harvey House guest room upstairs. The Frank Buck Zoo is a 20-minute walk in Leonard Park, with giraffes, a playground and a small train ride, and it was started by circus performers who wintered here. Fort Worth to Gainesville and back is the easy overnight from the Texas end: the northbound arrives at 6:30pm, and the southbound returns you to Fort Worth by 12:30pm the next day.
The Red River crossing southbound, a cheer for Texas, then the giraffes at Frank Buck.

Snack stop: A soda fountain and a bakery on the square, five minutes from the platform.
Out the window: Southbound: rolling ranch country, then the suburbs of Denton County, then the Fort Worth skyline.
The depot museum keeps limited hours; check before you plan around it. Gainesville has no ticket office.
Stop 7 of 7FTWTrain 821 arrives about 12:30pm; Train 822 leaves about 5:25pm
Fort Worth Central Station

The end of the line, at a downtown station with a 70-foot clock tower and a restored trolley car on display. The Water Gardens, a concrete canyon of fountains and steps, are five minutes away, Sundance Square ten, and the Texas Eagle to Chicago or Los Angeles leaves from the same platform in the early afternoon. The Stockyards, with a cattle drive down the street twice a day, are a TEXRail ride north. The southbound gets in at 12:30pm, so a Fort Worth afternoon is built in.
The 4pm cattle drive in the Stockyards: longhorns walking down Exchange Avenue with cowboys on horseback, free, every day.
Right off the platform
- at stopCentral Station: a waiting room, restrooms, a staffed counter; the Texas Eagle, TEXRail and the TRE to Dallas share it. Checked baggage for the Eagle only.
- 5 minThe Fort Worth Water Gardens: the quiet pool, the aerating pool and the big active pool (hold hands on the steps).
- 10 minSundance Square's plaza with fountains kids run through, and a candy shop.
- at stopThe Stockyards by TEXRail to North Side station and a 15-minute walk: the cattle drive at 11:30am and 4pm, a petting zoo and a maze (drive free; attractions admission).

Half a day between trains
- Arrive 12:30pm, lunch in Sundance Square, the Water Gardens, TEXRail to the Stockyards for the 4pm cattle drive.
Make it a full day
Two nights in Fort Worth: the Stockyards and the cattle drive the first day, the zoo or the science museum the second, and the northbound at 5:25pm, or the Texas Eagle on.
Snack stop: Sundance Square's candy shop and cafes, ten minutes away; the Stockyards have everything.
Out the window: Arriving southbound the skyline appears on the right, then the yards and the station.
The southbound Flyer is scheduled to arrive about 90 minutes before the Texas Eagle leaves; a late Flyer can miss it, so book the connection on one ticket and watch the app. TEXRail runs from Central Station to the Stockyards' North Side station every 30 minutes or so.
A river is a good ending

My mom grew up thinking of the Red River as the edge of the world, the line where Oklahoma stopped and Texas began, and she would have liked that her grandchildren crossed it on a train with their faces on the glass. We counted down from Ardmore. My daughter called it at the bridge. There is nothing on the far side but more ranch land, and it did not matter; they had crossed a river into another state, and that was the trip.
Next in this series: the Texas Eagle, which shares the Fort Worth platform and runs on to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and, three days a week, Los Angeles. Every route is on the Train Trips With Your Kids page.
Heartland Flyer trips with kids: questions parents ask
How long is the Heartland Flyer from Oklahoma City to Fort Worth?
About four hours. Train 821 leaves Oklahoma City at 8:25am and arrives in Fort Worth at about 12:30pm; Train 822 leaves Fort Worth at 5:25pm and arrives in Oklahoma City at about 9:25pm. One train each way, every day.
What is the best part of the Heartland Flyer for kids?
The hour before Ardmore southbound, when the train crosses the Arbuckle Mountains, and the Red River bridge about 30 minutes after it, where Oklahoma becomes Texas. Sit upstairs; most seats are on the upper level.
Which Heartland Flyer stop is best for a day with kids?
Pauls Valley. A 1911 steam engine and a caboose sit beside the 1905 depot, which is a free museum, and the Toy and Action Figure Museum is two blocks away. The southbound arrives at 9:25am and the northbound leaves at 8:05pm.
Can we ride just part of the Heartland Flyer with a toddler?
Yes. Oklahoma City to Norman is 22 minutes and Oklahoma City to Pauls Valley is an hour. The catch is the return: the northbound does not come back until the evening, so plan a car home or a long day.
Does the Heartland Flyer connect to the Texas Eagle?
Yes, at Fort Worth Central Station. The southbound Flyer arrives at about 12:30pm and the Texas Eagle leaves for both directions in the early afternoon, about 90 minutes later. Book it on one ticket so Amtrak protects the connection if the Flyer is late.
Which Heartland Flyer stops should we skip with kids?
Purcell, a platform with a river bridge just before it. Every other stop has a depot and something to do, but with one train a day each, pick one: Norman for a short hop, Pauls Valley for the engine, Gainesville for the zoo, Fort Worth for the cattle drive.
