Empire Service With Kids: A Trip Plan for Every Stop

16 stops · New York to Niagara Falls · About 24 min read · Jump to your stop

If you live in New York City and have never put your kids on a train, this is the one. Nine trains a day up the Hudson, the river on the left for two and a half hours, and stops along it where you can walk across an old railroad bridge, ride a free carousel in a museum, or sit on a fire truck. Two of those trains keep going across the whole state, past the best children's museum I have ever been in, to Niagara Falls. The Empire Service is also the train I took north the week after my mom died, alone, to sit by a window and watch water. It is good for that too. Below is every stop and what to do when you get off.

By Kelsey Lizee Cecil. Times are approximate from the fall 2026 timetable; checked against Amtrak and each attraction in October 2026. Hours change; read the "know before you go" notes.

If you only have one day

  • With a toddler: Albany to Hudson and back.Train 238 at 12:10pm, 22 minutes with the river on the right, a riverfront playground, Warren Street for ice cream, and Train 235 home about 5:30pm. Jump to Hudson.
  • Ages 4 to 8: a Poughkeepsie day from the city.Train 233 at 11:20am, the Mid-Hudson Children's Museum on the waterfront, the elevator up to the Walkway Over the Hudson, and Train 244 home at 5:30pm. Jump to Poughkeepsie.
  • The big one: across the state to the falls.Train 281 at 10:20am with the cafe, a night in Rochester for the Strong museum, Buffalo's Canalside, then the falls. Jump to Rochester.

Read this before you go

Three things to know. First, only the four Niagara Falls trains (280, 281, 283 and 284) have a cafe; the seven Albany trains each way sell nothing, so pack food even for 2.5 hours. Second, sit on the left heading north for the Hudson, and if the left is full, watch for seats opening at Yonkers and Croton-Harmon. Third, the Niagara Falls trains change engines at Albany-Rensselaer, so the pause there is planned, not a delay. Alerts are on the Empire Service page on Amtrak (opens in a new tab).

Tickets, seats, bathrooms, strollers and what to pack are all in our Empire Service parent guide. This page is the fun part: where to get off and what to do when you do.

Choose a stop, then press Go to jump to it.

Stop 1 of 16NYPAbout 9 northbound Empire trains a day from 8:15am to 11:25pm; the Niagara Falls trains leave about 10:20am and 1:20pm on weekdays

New York Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station

Watercolor of Rally and his family walking toward a red train

The Empire Service leaves from Moynihan Train Hall, the skylit, calm side of Penn Station across Eighth Avenue from the Garden, and within ten minutes it is running up the Hudson with the river on the left. That is the whole pitch. Two and a half hours to Albany, no transfers, a river the entire way, and the best first ride you can start from Manhattan. Only the Niagara Falls trains have a cafe, so pack food for the Albany ones.

The moment to plan for

Stand under the skylights, find your train on the board, and tell the kids the first five minutes are a tunnel and then there will be water.

Right off the platform

  • at stopMoynihan Train Hall: the skylit concourse, a food hall, restrooms, a Mamava nursing pod and staffed counters.
  • 10 minThe High Line and Hudson Yards, a 10-minute walk west.
  • 15 minBryant Park's carousel and the library lions.
  • 10 minThe Empire State Building's lobby and view.

Half a day between trains

  1. Breakfast in the food hall, the skylights, the walk to the track (45 minutes).

Make it a full day

New York is a trip of its own. The Empire Service is how you leave it with a river out the window by 10am.

Snack stop: The food hall before boarding; most Albany trains sell nothing on board.

Out the window: The Empire Connection tunnel under the West Side, then daylight at the river with the Palisades across the water.

Know before you go, October 2026

Sit on the left heading north for the Hudson. Train 233 at 11:20am is the easy Poughkeepsie day trip; Train 281 at 10:20am and 283 at 1:20pm are the Niagara Falls trains with a cafe.

Stop 2 of 16YNYMost Albany trains; one of the two Niagara Falls trainsour honest take: ride on

Yonkers

A 1911 station on the river, restored, with a waterfront park outside and a science barge that opens on summer weekends. Twenty minutes from Penn Station; Metro-North covers it better and more often. Nice to look at from the train, not a stop to plan around.

The moment to plan for

The Science Barge on the river, free, on a summer weekend, if you are a Yonkers family boarding here.

Right off the platform

  • at stopThe 1911 station with a waiting room and restrooms, shared with Metro-North.
  • 5 minThe Yonkers waterfront park and the daylighted Saw Mill River park.
  • 5 minThe Science Barge, a floating greenhouse, free (seasonal weekends).
  • at stopThe Hudson River Museum and its planetarium, by cab (admission).

Half a day between trains

  1. Stay aboard.

Make it a full day

Skip on Amtrak; Metro-North for a Yonkers day.

Snack stop: The waterfront's cafes.

Out the window: The Palisades across the river on the left, and the Tappan Zee bridge ahead.

Stop 3 of 16CRTEvery train

Croton-Harmon

A big Metro-North station beside the Harmon rail yard, where the electric trains end and the diesels begin. Croton Point Park on the river is a mile away, and Van Cortlandt Manor, a 15-minute walk, hosts the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze every fall. Every Empire train stops here, so some riders get off and the left-side seats open up.

The moment to plan for

The Blaze in October: thousands of carved pumpkins in the dark at Van Cortlandt Manor. Book ahead; it sells out.

Right off the platform

  • at stopA large station with a waiting room, restrooms and a coffee counter, shared with Metro-North.
  • 15 minVan Cortlandt Manor, with the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze from late September into November (tickets; sells out).
  • 20 minCroton Point Park on the river: a beach, a playground and a nature center.
  • at stopThe Harmon rail yard from the platform, full of trains.

Half a day between trains

  1. Croton Point Park's playground and the river (90 minutes).

Make it a full day

The Blaze in fall, with a Metro-North or Empire train home after dark.

Snack stop: The station counter; a deli in the village.

Out the window: North of here the river widens into Haverstraw Bay and the train runs right along it for 40 miles.

Know before you go, October 2026

Watch for seats opening on the left side as riders get off here.

Stop 4 of 16POUEvery train; about 1 hour 25 minutes from New York

Poughkeepsie

Watercolor of Rally at the train window watching a white bird fly over the water

The best day-trip stop on the Hudson with kids, and it starts in a 1918 station with arched windows designed by the same firm as Grand Central. The Mid-Hudson Children's Museum is on the waterfront a few minutes from the platform. Four blocks north, an elevator lifts you 21 stories to the Walkway Over the Hudson, an old railroad bridge turned into a mile-long park 212 feet above the river. My daughter walked the whole thing at four and then asked to do it again.

The moment to plan for

The elevator up to the Walkway, then stand in the middle of the bridge with the river underneath and a train going by on the real bridge downstream.

Right off the platform

  • at stopPoughkeepsie station: a restored 1918 waiting room with the big arched windows, restrooms and a counter.
  • 5 minThe Mid-Hudson Children's Museum on the waterfront, ages 0 to 10 (admission; check days).
  • 5 minUpper Landing Park and the Walkway elevator, running most days in season until late November; a 15-minute walk and stairs otherwise (free).
  • 5 minThe riverfront park and a playground.
  • 15 minMain Street's bakeries and the Bardavon theater.

Half a day between trains

  1. The Children's Museum (90 minutes).
  2. The elevator and the Walkway (1 hour).
  3. Ice cream at the waterfront, then the train.

Make it a full day

Train 233 at 11:20am, the Children's Museum, the Walkway, lunch on the waterfront, and Train 244 home at 5:30pm. Or stay the night and ride on to Albany or the Catskills ferry at Rhinecliff.

Snack stop: The waterfront cafes and an ice cream stand by the museum.

Out the window: The Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Walkway cross overhead just north of the station; look up.

Know before you go, October 2026

The Walkway elevator closes in high wind and for the winter; there is a hotline to check. Children's Museum days vary.

Stop 5 of 16RHIEvery train

Rhinecliff

A small 1914 station right on the river, with a hill village above it and Rhinebeck three miles inland by cab. Rhinebeck has a toy store, a very old inn, and, on summer and fall weekends, the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome's biplane air shows. Across the bridge in Kingston is a trolley museum with rides. It is a grandparents' stop; a lot of families get off here to be met.

The moment to plan for

The Aerodrome air show on a weekend: biplanes from the 1910s looping over a grass field, and a ride in an open-cockpit plane for brave adults.

Right off the platform

  • at stopThe 1914 station on the riverbank, with a waiting room and an elevator up to the village.
  • at stopRhinebeck's village, 10 minutes by cab: a toy store, a bookshop, the Beekman Arms, and ice cream.
  • at stopThe Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, 15 minutes by cab, with weekend air shows from June into October (admission).
  • at stopKingston across the river by cab: the Trolley Museum of New York's rides and the Hudson River Maritime Museum (seasonal).

Half a day between trains

  1. Cab to Rhinebeck for lunch and the toy store (2 hours).

Make it a full day

A weekend with the Aerodrome on Saturday and Kingston's trolley on Sunday, with a car.

Snack stop: A cafe at the top of the station hill; Rhinebeck's bakeries.

Out the window: The widest part of the river, with the Catskills rising on the far side to the left.

Know before you go, October 2026

Cabs meet most trains but call ahead for a return.

Stop 6 of 16HUDEvery train; 22 minutes from Albany

Hudson

The shortest hop on the route and the one I would pick for a toddler's first train: 22 minutes from Albany, into a brick 1874 station with a riverfront park right outside. Warren Street climbs from the station through a mile of shops and ice cream. A cab ride away is a museum of 90 antique fire engines, which is a better afternoon with a four-year-old than it sounds.

The moment to plan for

The FASNY Museum of Firefighting: a hall of hand-pumped engines, steam pumpers and ladder trucks you can sit on, with a kids' area (admission; check days).

Right off the platform

  • at stopHudson station: a restored 1874 waiting room, restrooms and a counter.
  • 2 minHenry Hudson Riverfront Park, with a playground and the Hudson-Athens lighthouse in view.
  • 5 minWarren Street's shops, a toy store and ice cream, uphill.
  • at stopThe FASNY Museum of Firefighting, 10 minutes by cab (admission).
  • at stopOlana, the painter Frederic Church's house on a hill, by cab, with trails and the view (grounds free).

Half a day between trains

  1. Train 238 from Albany at 12:10pm, the riverfront playground and Warren Street for lunch, Train 235 back about 5:30pm.

Make it a full day

The fire museum by cab, Warren Street, the park, and a night in town before riding on.

Snack stop: Warren Street's bakeries and ice cream.

Out the window: Leaving north, the river stays close, with the lighthouse on the left just past the station.

Know before you go, October 2026

The fire museum is not downtown; it needs a cab. The lighthouse runs tours a few weekends a summer.

Stop 7 of 16ALBEvery train; the Niagara Falls trains pause here about 20 minutes to change engines

Albany-Rensselaer

The end for seven of nine trains, in a bright modern station with a clock tower on the Rensselaer side of the river. Downtown Albany is two miles across the bridge by cab or bus: the State Museum is free and has a working 1912 carousel on its top floor, and the Empire State Plaza next door has an egg-shaped theater and an underground concourse kids love to run. Niagara Falls trains swap the dual-mode engine for a diesel here, so the pause is planned.

The moment to plan for

Riding the carousel on the fourth floor of the State Museum, free, with the Adirondack and New York City halls on the way up.

Right off the platform

  • at stopAlbany-Rensselaer station: a big waiting room, restrooms, a cafe counter, a staffed counter and a garage.
  • at stopThe New York State Museum, 10 minutes by cab or bus across the river: the carousel, a mastodon, the Sesame Street set and the 9/11 gallery, free (check days).
  • at stopEmpire State Plaza: the Egg, the reflecting pool (an ice rink in winter) and the observation deck, free.
  • at stopThe USS Slater, a WWII destroyer museum on the Albany riverfront, by cab (seasonal; admission).
  • at stopAlbany Pine Bush Discovery Center, by car, with trails and a hands-on room, free.

Half a day between trains

  1. Cab to the State Museum and the carousel (2 hours).
  2. The Plaza's concourse, then back across the river.

Make it a full day

The State Museum, the Plaza, the destroyer, dinner downtown, and tomorrow's train north on the Adirondack or west toward Niagara.

Snack stop: The station cafe; downtown Albany's lunch counters near the Plaza.

Out the window: Leaving west, the train turns away from the Hudson and follows the Mohawk; the river views are over.

Know before you go, October 2026

The station is not in Albany; it is across the river. Budget a cab each way. Niagara Falls riders: the engine change is the time to stretch legs on the platform.

Stop 8 of 16SDYThe two Niagara Falls trains and the Maple Leaf, Adirondack and Ethan Allen; about 25 minutes from Albany

Schenectady

A downtown station from 2018 in the city General Electric built, with a science museum and planetarium a mile away and a big park with a toddler playland. The Adirondack and Ethan Allen stop here too, so it gets more trains than the rest of the western stops.

The moment to plan for

The planetarium at miSci, then the hands-on floor.

Right off the platform

  • at stopA modern station with a waiting room and restrooms, close to downtown.
  • 5 minJay Street and State Street's cafes and Proctors theater.
  • 20 minmiSci, the Museum of Innovation and Science, with a planetarium (admission; check days).
  • at stopCentral Park's Tiny Tot Land playground and rose garden, by cab.

The moment to plan for

Walking the Overlook bridge across the Mohawk, five minutes from the platform.

Right off the platform

  • at stopA small station with a shelter and a lot.
  • 5 minThe Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook pedestrian bridge and its gardens, free.
  • 10 minDowntown Amsterdam across the bridge.

Stop 10 of 16UCAThe two Niagara Falls trains and the Maple Leaf; about 1 hour 40 minutes from Albany

Utica Union Station

A grand 1914 station with marble, benches and a barbershop, and the home platform of the Adirondack Railroad, whose tourist trains run from here to the mountains in season. The Utica Children's Museum reopened in 2025 in a new building a short cab ride away, with seven galleries. A zoo, a very good art museum and the half-moon cookie round it out. If you are going to break the Niagara trip once, this is a good place.

The moment to plan for

The Adirondack Railroad from the far platform: a slow diesel train into the woods and back, in season. Otherwise the Children's Museum.

Right off the platform

  • at stopUnion Station: the marble waiting room, restrooms, a cafe, a staffed counter, and the Adirondack Railroad's platform.

Make it a full day

An Adirondack Railroad day from Union Station, the Children's Museum, and the Niagara train the next afternoon.

Snack stop: The station cafe; Holland Farms by cab.

Out the window: The Mohawk flattens out; the canal is on the right.

Know before you go, October 2026

Adirondack Railroad runs on a seasonal calendar with holiday trains in December; book ahead.

Stop 11 of 16ROMThe two Niagara Falls trains and the Maple Leafour honest take: ride on

Rome

A neoclassical depot with bronze chandeliers, and a reconstructed Revolutionary War fort downtown with a free visitor center. The station is a mile and a half from the fort, so it works with a cab. A history stop for ages seven and up; most families ride on.

The moment to plan for

Fort Stanwix's log walls and the rangers' cannon talk, if you get off.

Right off the platform

  • at stopThe 1914 depot with a waiting room and restrooms.
  • at stopFort Stanwix National Monument, 5 minutes by cab or a 30-minute walk, free.

Make it a full day

The zoo, the MOST, and the State Fair in late August with its own stop.

Snack stop: Counters in the station; Armory Square's restaurants by cab.

Out the window: Onondaga Lake on the right leaving west, then the Finger Lakes farm country.

Know before you go, October 2026

The station is not downtown; everything needs a cab or the Centro bus. During the State Fair, trains stop at the fairgrounds instead of here for fairgoers.

Stop 13 of 16ROCThe two Niagara Falls trains and the Maple Leaf; about 1 hour 20 minutes from Syracuse

Rochester

Watercolor of Rally sitting on a train seat while the conductor holds out a hand

The Strong National Museum of Play is a 20-minute walk from the station, and it is the single best indoor place for children on this route or maybe any route: a Sesame Street set, a butterfly garden, a carousel, a pretend grocery store, and the video game hall of fame for the grown-ups. The station itself opened in 2017 and was designed to echo the grand depot the city tore down. Every family on the Niagara train should think about getting off here.

The moment to plan for

The Strong: Sesame Street first, the carousel second, the butterflies when they need to slow down.

Snack stop: The Strong's cafe; a garbage plate for dinner.

Out the window: West of Rochester the land flattens into orchards and the Erie Canal towns.

Know before you go, October 2026

The Strong is worth a whole day; buy tickets ahead on school holidays.

Buffalo-Exchange Street

A small 2020 station downtown, five minutes on foot from Canalside, where Buffalo rebuilt its waterfront around the end of the Erie Canal. There is a children's museum right on the canal, a solar-powered carousel from 1924, a destroyer and a submarine to board, and paddle boats in summer. The Buffalo Zoo and the wings are a cab ride. If the falls are your destination, a night here first is an easy split.

The moment to plan for

Right off the platform

  • at stopExchange Street station: a waiting room, restrooms and a counter, next to the hockey arena.

Make it a full day

A Buffalo night: Canalside, the ships, the zoo, wings, and the 42-minute ride to Niagara Falls in the morning or evening.

Snack stop: Canalside's stands in summer; downtown cafes.

Out the window: Leaving for Niagara Falls the train crosses the city and runs north past the Niagara River's upper rapids.

Know before you go, October 2026

Niagara Falls

Watercolor of Rally looking out the train window at Grandmommy and Papa waiting on the platform

The end of the line, in a 2016 station built around an 1863 customhouse that now holds the Underground Railroad Heritage Center on its first floor. The falls are about two and a half miles away: a 10-minute cab or the free seasonal shuttle. Then it is Goat Island, the Cave of the Winds decks where the spray soaks you, the Maid of the Mist boat in season, and an aquarium with sea lions a mile from the station. Amtrak says 700,000 gallons go over every second. My son asked if that was more than our bathtub.

The moment to plan for

The Hurricane Deck at Cave of the Winds, in yellow ponchos, screaming happily. Then the Maid of the Mist if it is running.

Right off the platform

  • at stopNiagara Falls station: a waiting room, restrooms, a counter, and the Underground Railroad Heritage Center inside (admission; check days).
  • 20 minThe Aquarium of Niagara, with sea lions, penguins and a touch pool, about a mile (admission).
  • at stopNiagara Falls State Park, 10 minutes by cab or the free Discover Niagara shuttle in season: Goat Island, the Niagara Scenic Trolley, Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist (admission for each; boats roughly May to early November).
  • at stopThe Rainbow Bridge walkway to Canada, on foot with passports or birth certificates for the kids.
  • at stopWhirlpool State Park and the gorge trails, by car.

Half a day between trains

  1. Train 284 home leaves at 6:37am, so a half day here means a night: arrive at 7:45pm, sleep, the falls in the morning, and the Maple Leaf south at 11:40am (check its border delays).

Make it a full day

Two nights. Day one: the state park, Cave of the Winds, the boat, the trolley. Day two: the aquarium, the Heritage Center, the Rainbow Bridge on foot for the Canadian view, and the morning train east.

Snack stop: The state park's cafes; Third Street's restaurants near the station.

Out the window: Arriving, the Niagara River is on the right, fast and green; the falls themselves are not visible from the train.

Know before you go, October 2026

The 6:37am eastbound is early with kids; the Maple Leaf at 11:40am is the civilized option but can run late after its border stop. Boats are seasonal. The station is not at the falls; plan the cab.

A river for two and a half hours

Watercolor of Rally at the train window watching a white bird fly over the water
The window page from the book. On this train the water is the Hudson, on the left, for most of the way to Albany.

There is a stretch north of Croton where the river is a mile wide and the train runs on a causeway with water on both sides, and every child in the car goes quiet. I have seen it happen a dozen times. Mine do it too. You do not need the whole state; you need that stretch, a bag of pretzels and a stop with a playground at the end. Albany to Hudson. Poughkeepsie for the bridge. The rest of it, the carousel and the museum of play and the falls, can wait for when they are older and you are braver.

Next in this series: the Maple Leaf, which runs the same route and then crosses into Canada to Toronto, and the Adirondack, which leaves the Hudson at Albany for Lake Champlain and Montreal. For the corridor south, the Northeast Regional, and for Pennsylvania the Keystone Service. Every route is on the Train Trips With Your Kids page.

Empire Service trips with kids: questions parents ask

How long is the Empire Service from New York to Albany?

About 2 hours 30 minutes, with about nine trains a day each way. The full run to Niagara Falls is about 9 hours 20 minutes, on two trains a day each way.

Which side of the Empire Service has the Hudson River?

The left side heading north out of New York, the right side heading south. The river is beside the train for most of the way to Albany. West of Albany the route follows the Mohawk and there is no long water view.

Do kids pay on the Empire Service?

Kids 2 to 12 pay half the adult fare with an adult on the booking, and one child under 2 rides free on each adult's lap. Students 13 to 25 with ID get 15 percent off coach on trips inside New York State, booked a day ahead.

Is there food on the Empire Service?

Only on the four Niagara Falls trains (280, 281, 283 and 284). The Albany trains have no cafe, so bring snacks, water and a meal if your ride crosses lunch.

What is the best Empire Service stop for kids?

Poughkeepsie for a day trip from the city: a children's museum on the waterfront and an elevator up to the Walkway Over the Hudson. On the western half, Rochester, for the Strong National Museum of Play, a 20-minute walk from the station.

Which Empire Service stops should we skip with kids?

Yonkers (Metro-North does it better), Amsterdam, Rome and Buffalo-Depew. Syracuse's station needs a cab for everything. The trip is Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff, Hudson, Albany, Utica, Rochester, Buffalo-Exchange Street and the falls.
