Watercress Line Father Christmas Express 2026 at Ropley

At Ropley, the present is earned rather than handed over: children are given a magic token on the train and trade it at a stall called Present Junction in Father Christmas's Hampshire Hideaway. The steam ride itself is short and sweet, and the rest of the visit is a station full of trails, letters and a miniature railway. For other options, see our full list of UK Santa steam trains.

Tokens, trails and a steam ride to Medstead

Arriving at Father Christmas's Hampshire Hideaway

Everything happens at Ropley station on Bighton Hill, postcode SO24 9SQ. Unlike the Watercress Line's normal days, this event uses Ropley only, and the railway asks you not to park at any of its other stations. The Hideaway activities run from 9.30am to 3.30pm, and your ticket shows the time you board the train, so you can arrive early and play first or ride first and play afterwards.

The Hideaway is the part of the day that sets this event apart. There is an activity trail, a miniature railway, a letter writing corner for messages to Father Christmas, photo opportunities and reindeer food for children to take home. None of it is a quick add-on: give yourself at least an hour on the station around your train time, more if your children like to linger.

A simple order that works for most families is letter first, then the train, then Present Junction and the trail. Writing to Father Christmas before meeting him gives children something to tell him about, and keeping the present until after the ride stops it being unwrapped on the train.

On the Father Christmas Express

The steam train runs from Ropley up the line to Medstead and back in about 35 minutes. That is a manageable length for toddlers and short enough that nobody gets bored, yet long enough to feel like a real journey behind a working engine. Seats are allocated automatically when you book individual tickets, so there is no carriage to choose; ask the railway if you need to be sure your group sits together.

During the ride, Father Christmas walks through the train to meet the children. Rather than handing out presents on board, he gives each child a magic token. Babies under one have a gift-only ticket with no seat and sit on a parent's lap, and children under two without their own seat also travel on a lap.

Present Junction

Back at Ropley, the magic token is the ticket to Present Junction, where children exchange it for their present. It turns the gift into a little mission, which preschoolers in particular love, and it gives you a natural end point to the visit. Keep the token somewhere safe between the train and the stall: a zipped pocket is better than a small hand.

Food and drink are not included, but the station sells extras at set prices: hot chocolate £6, a mince pie £2, a sweet cone £2.50, an elf hat £2.50, a festive picnic box £15.95, a kids' picnic box £6.25, and mulled cider with a mince pie for £8.50. Check at booking whether the picnic boxes need to be ordered in advance. For a contrasting Christmas train that bundles a fairground into the ticket, the Bluebell Santa Specials in Sussex are about an hour and a half east.

Which Ropley day and boarding time to book

With a baby on the Watercress Line

Under-ones have their own £12 ticket on most dates (£14.50 on Christmas Eve), which covers a gift but no seat. With very limited buggy space on board, a sling makes the train much easier. A morning boarding time suits most babies, who are usually at their happiest early in the day, and the Hideaway is quieter before the lunchtime trains.

Toddlers and preschoolers

The 35-minute ride is about the right length for two- to five-year-olds, and the token exchange at Present Junction gives them a clear goal. Plan your boarding time around naps: if your child sleeps after lunch, either book an early train and play afterwards, or arrive after the nap for a mid-afternoon ride, remembering that activities finish at 3.30pm. Children aged 1 to 15 pay the child fare, which is higher than the adult fare; the present comes with the child ticket.

Older children on the Watercress Line

School-age children may enjoy the miniature railway and the activity trail more than the train, so a later boarding time with play first can work well. If they are past believing, the letter writing table is a nice way to involve them in helping a younger sibling. Because the child fare applies right up to age 15, teenagers count as children here and receive a present too, which is worth knowing when you budget for a family with a wide age range.

Price and date

Every date except Christmas Eve uses the same prices. On 24 December the fares rise to £34.50 for children, £28.50 for adults and £14.50 for under-ones. There is a £2.50 booking fee on top, and flexible tickets cost slightly more. If there is any chance your plans will change, the flexible option is worth considering, because standard tickets are non-refundable and changes cost £20 with 3 working days' notice. Weekday dates from 21 to 23 December fall after most schools break up, while 12, 13, 19 and 20 December are the weekend choices.

As for weather, much of the Hideaway is outside on the station, so a dry day makes the trails more fun. In wet weather, plan more of your time around the train ride, and ask the railway which Hideaway activities are under cover.

Why it is called the Watercress Line

The line was built by the Mid-Hants Railway company, which was authorised in 1861 to build a railway connecting with the London and South Western Railway at Alton and Winchester. It opened on 2 October 1865. Its popular name comes from the days when it carried locally grown watercress from the beds around Alresford to markets in London.

British Rail closed the line in February 1973; the summary on Wikipedia gives 5 February 1973. Volunteers set to work on the section between Alresford and Ropley and reopened it on 30 April 1977. They reached Medstead and Four Marks on 28 May 1983 and Alton, where the line meets the national network, on 25 May 1985. The heritage railway is about 10 miles (16 km) long.

Ropley, where the Father Christmas Express starts, is the line's engineering centre. The main locomotive shed and workshops were built there, which is why steam engines are so often in view around the station. The section between Alresford and Alton is known as The Alps because of its steep gradients. Medstead and Four Marks is described as the highest station in Hampshire, and the summit of the line, just outside it, is 652 feet (199 m) above sea level. Your Santa train climbs from Ropley towards that high point and back, so even a short trip shows the engine working hard on the bank.

Children who like a story with a twist enjoy hearing that a railway can be named after a salad leaf, and it is a good conversation starter on the platform. For older children, the dates tell a second story: it took the volunteers eight years to rebuild the line from Alresford to Alton, working outwards a few miles at a time, from Ropley in 1977 to Medstead in 1983 and Alton in 1985. Ropley sits in the middle of that story, which is partly why it became the workshop and engine shed for the whole railway.

That also explains why the Father Christmas Express starts here rather than at either end. With the sheds next door, Ropley is the railway's working heart, and on a December day you may see engines being prepared alongside the Santa trains. The railway does not list which locomotive will haul each departure, so if your child is keen on a particular engine, ask the railway nearer the time.

A version for a six-year-old: this railway was famous for carrying watercress to London, and when it was closed, people who loved steam engines fixed it up so that trains could puff up the big hill again, and now Father Christmas rides it too.

A Hampshire December around Ropley and Winchester

Ropley is a village between Alresford and Alton, and the Father Christmas Express is a self-contained day at the station. With trails, a miniature railway and the train itself, many families find a morning at Ropley is plenty for small children, and save any further plans for older ones. Winchester is about 20 minutes' drive away and Southampton about 35 minutes, so many families combine the train with an afternoon in the city.

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market runs from Friday 20 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026, according to the cathedral's own information sheet. It overlaps with every Father Christmas Express date except 23 and 24 December, and pairing the two makes for a full festive day out: train in the morning, market and cathedral close in the afternoon. Expect it to be busy at weekends, and look up parking before you go. With a pushchair, a weekday visit to the market is usually easier, and the Father Christmas Express runs on weekdays too, on 21 to 23 December.

On the same railway, the Watercress Line also runs a separate after-dark event, Steam Illuminations, from 27 November 2026 to 2 January 2027. It is a different ticket and a different experience, but worth knowing about if your children love the trains and want a second visit in the holidays. Because it runs into early January, it can also be a treat for the quiet days between Christmas and New Year, after the Father Christmas Express has finished on 24 December. Check the railway's own page for its times, prices and where it departs, as those details are separate from the Santa event.

Families coming from London will find more festive ideas in our roundup of family Christmas events in London. If you are heading west instead, the East Somerset Railway's Santa trains at Cranmore are within a long day trip.

Ropley practicalities for families

Buggies and pushchairs

Buggy space on the train is very limited. The railway asks families to fold pushchairs onto the luggage racks or leave them at Ropley. On the station, a pushchair is useful between the trail and the activities, so leaving it at Ropley while you ride is the simplest plan. Ask the railway where buggies can be left safely, and label yours with a name and phone number.

Parking and arrival at Ropley

Park at Ropley station, Bighton Hill, SO24 9SQ. The railway specifically says not to park at its other stations for this event, since the train starts and ends at Ropley. Check your boarding time on the ticket and arrive early enough to park, collect any extras and find the platform.

Tickets and changes at Ropley

Tickets are individual and seats are allocated automatically. There are no discounts and no free carer tickets. Standard tickets cannot be refunded, and changes need 3 working days' notice and a £20 fee. Flexible tickets can be refunded as a gift card with 5 working days' notice. Under-twos without a seat travel on a lap. A £2.50 booking fee is added; the page does not say whether it is charged per ticket or per order, so check the basket total before paying.

Accessibility at Ropley

Accessible carriage space is limited, so contact the reservations team on 01962 733810 before booking if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or needs step-free boarding. There are no free carer tickets for this event, so budget for every adult in the group.

Toilets, heating and food

The event page does not describe toilets, baby changing or heating on the train. Ask the reservations team, and dress in layers for the outdoor Hideaway. Food and drink are extras at listed prices, so bring snacks if you would rather not buy.

One thing to double check

When the event page was checked it showed a stray label saying the event had finished, even though the 2026 dates and booking link were live. Confirm availability on the booking system before you plan around a date.

Dogs on the Watercress Line

Only assistance dogs are allowed on the Father Christmas Express, so the family dog will need to stay at home for the day.

Timing your visit

The Hideaway closes at 3.30pm, so families with an afternoon boarding time should check how much play time is left after their train. If you want a relaxed visit with time for every activity, choose a morning boarding time and arrive soon after 9.30am. On Christmas Eve, when prices are highest, it pays to make the most of the full day.

Packing for Present Junction and the Hideaway

Most of the visit is on the station rather than the train, so think playground rather than restaurant.

  • A sling or carrier, as buggy space on the train is very limited
  • Wellies and waterproofs for the activity trail
  • A safe pocket for the magic token, the key to the present
  • A pre-written list of names for the letter writing table
  • A small bag for the reindeer food to take home
  • Snacks and a flask, unless you plan to buy the extras
  • Card or cash for hot chocolate, mince pies and picnic boxes
  • Your ticket, with the boarding time clearly visible on your phone or printed out
