Santa trains sell out fast
The best dates are often gone weeks before December. Leave your email and we will write once, the moment 2027 bookings open in West Midlands.

The train story to read before you boardRally Takes the Train is a five-minute rhyming picture book about a little corgi’s first train ride to see his grandparents, hand-painted in real watercolour. For ages 0 to 5.
Kidderminster, a steam run to Arley and a show on the platform
Arriving at Kidderminster
Santa's Steam Specials start at the Severn Valley Railway's own station in Kidderminster, postcode DY10 1QX, which stands next to the town's mainline station. The railway suggests arriving up to 45 minutes before your departure, which gives you time to park, collect yourselves and look at the engines. The car park uses number plate recognition and costs £4 for the day.
Departures run between 10am and 4.30pm, and you book a specific slot. Your booking is for a whole table or private compartment, so once you find your seats you have your own space for the trip, which makes a big difference with small children who like to wriggle.
Tables suit couples with one child or a family of four who are happy to sit facing each other, while a private compartment closes off from the corridor and feels more like a little room of your own. Travelling with grandparents? A compartment for six keeps everyone together.
Thirty minutes of steam along the Severn
From Kidderminster the train runs for about 30 minutes to Arley, passing through Bewdley on the way. Everyone on board gets a gingerbread biscuit, and there is a copy of the North Pole News to read together on the way.
The railway is clear that steam is subject to availability, so on some trains a diesel locomotive may be used instead. That is worth mentioning to engine-mad children in advance, so that nobody is disappointed if a diesel turns up.
The Recipe for Christmas at Arley
The big change for 2026 is the show. At Arley station, Santa and his friends perform a brand new theatrical show called The Recipe for Christmas. This is a performance rather than a grotto, and the railway says plainly that Santa does not meet guests individually. If your child has their heart set on whispering a wish into Santa's ear, prepare them for watching a show instead.
Each child receives a present, which is why the railway asks for the names and ages of all children when you book. Children also get a complimentary Freedom of the Line ticket for a day out on the railway in 2027, subject to terms, which gives you a reason to come back in the summer. The railway's page does not mention mince pies or mulled wine for adults on these trains, so do not count on them; if you want a hot drink, ask what is available on board or at Arley when you book.
Back to Kidderminster, or a stop at Bewdley
After the show, you return by train to Kidderminster. On selected departures, you can choose to stop off at Bewdley on the way back and then take a diesel shuttle to Kidderminster later. The railway's page does not list which departures offer this, so check on the booking site if you would like an hour in the riverside town. Allow at least 2½ hours in total for the whole experience.
Picking a Severn Valley Santa slot for babies, pre-schoolers and big kids
Babies and under 2s
Children under 2 travel free, do not count towards your group size and still receive a present, which makes this a good value option for families with a baby. Because buggies cannot go into the Arley show and the railway suggests leaving them at home, bring a sling or carrier. A morning departure from 10am fits best around naps for many babies.
Preschoolers and a show instead of a grotto
Pre-schoolers love a show, and The Recipe for Christmas is designed to be watched together as a family. The total of 2½ hours or more is quite long for the youngest children, so a slot that fits around their usual nap time helps. If your child is likely to be upset by not meeting Santa face to face, talk it through beforehand. You could tell them that Santa is very busy this year making a special Christmas recipe, and that they are invited to watch him and his friends at work. Bring a favourite snack for the train, as gingerbread alone may not keep a hungry three-year-old going for the whole afternoon.
Older children on the Severn Valley
Older children often enjoy a theatrical show more than a grotto visit, and they will appreciate the Freedom of the Line ticket for 2027. A later departure, up to 4.30pm, brings you back after dark, which adds atmosphere. If you have children of different ages, the show format can work well for everyone at once, since nobody has to queue for a turn.
Relaxed trains, budget and weather
Relaxed Santa's Steam Specials run on 6, 13 and 20 December. The page does not explain what is different on those trains, so contact the railway if your child would benefit from a calmer experience and ask what adjustments are made.
Prices are per table or compartment, from £67 for a table for two to £210 for a compartment for six. A family of four pays from £133 for a table or from £140 for a private compartment. The show at Arley takes place at the station, so dress for the weather, as December in Worcestershire can be cold and damp.
If you are comparing options, the GWSR Santa Express from Toddington in Gloucestershire is the nearest other steam railway with Santa trains in our guide.
Sixteen miles of the Severn valley, rebuilt by volunteers
The Severn Valley line was built between 1858 and 1862 and opened on 1 February 1862, running along the river between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. Arley was one of its stations from the start. The following year, on 1 August 1863, the line was absorbed into the Great Western Railway.
Like many country railways, it did not survive the 1960s. Passenger trains between Shrewsbury and Bewdley stopped on 9 September 1963, the year of the Beeching Report, and through freight ended at the end of November. A small passenger service around Bewdley and Kidderminster carried on until January 1970.
Rescue began quickly. A preservation society was formed in July 1965, and the Severn Valley Railway Company followed in May 1967. In 1970 the first heritage trains ran between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade. The railway reached Bewdley in 1974, and on 30 July 1984 it opened through to Kidderminster, where the volunteers built a new station, Kidderminster Town.
The line has faced serious setbacks. Floods on 19 June 2007 caused major damage, and the full line did not reopen until 21 March 2008. More recently, a landslip on 30 January 2025 closed part of the route until 26 July 2025. Today the railway runs for 16 miles between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, and Arley, with its Victoria Bridge nearby, is one of its best-known stations: the bridge appeared in the 1978 film The Thirty Nine Steps.
There is one more chapter for 2026. On 1 June 2026 the railway's society became a Charitable Community Benefit Society, a change in how the organisation behind the line is set up. When you buy a Santa ticket, you are helping to fund the upkeep of 16 miles of track, bridges and stations that volunteers have cared for since the 1960s.
Freight lingered on the Kidderminster end for many years after passenger trains stopped: goods trains served Foley Park, on the edge of Kidderminster, until 1982, only two years before heritage trains arrived in the town.
- 1862The Severn Valley line opens on 1 February.
- 1863The Great Western Railway absorbs the line on 1 August.
- 1963Passenger trains between Shrewsbury and Bewdley end on 9 September.
- 1965A preservation society is formed in July.
- 1970Heritage trains start between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade.
- 1974Services are extended to Bewdley.
- 1984Trains reach Kidderminster on 30 July, and Kidderminster Town station opens.
- 2008The full line reopens on 21 March after the 2007 floods.
- 2025The full line reopens on 26 July after a landslip.
To tell a six-year-old: this railway was closed when Grandma was little, and lots of helpers spent years putting it back, mending bridges and building new stations, so that Santa could put on his show at Arley.
Kidderminster, Bewdley and the Wyre Forest in December
Bewdley, where some departures let you stop on the way back, is a handsome Georgian town on the River Severn, with a riverside walk and plenty of cafés. If your departure includes the Bewdley stop, it is an easy way to stretch the day out.
The Wyre Forest lies just west of Bewdley, with family walking trails among the trees. In December paths can be muddy, so wellies are a good idea. A short loop under the trees is a good way to let children run off their excitement before the drive home, but keep an eye on the time, as it gets dark early and the forest paths are not lit. Close to Bewdley you will also find the West Midland Safari Park; check its own website for winter opening and any Christmas events.
Kidderminster itself has shops and places to eat within easy reach of the station, and it is a convenient base if you are coming from further away and want to stay overnight. Worcester is about 30 minutes away, Wolverhampton about 35 minutes and Birmingham about 40 minutes by car.
According to ITV News, Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market returns to Victoria Square and New Street from 5 November to Christmas Eve 2026. Our guide to Birmingham at Christmas with kids lists more family events in the city.
Arley itself is a small, peaceful village on the river, and its station sits close to the Severn and the Victoria Bridge. The railway's page does not describe how much time you have at Arley beyond the show, so ask when you book if you would like to explore.
If you are thinking of a second Santa trip in the region, the Great Central Railway Santa Express in Loughborough is about an hour and a half away.
Severn Valley Santa trips: what parents should know
Buggies
The railway asks families to leave buggies at home. If you do bring one, it must be folded, and it is not allowed into the show at Arley. A sling or carrier is the better option. If you arrive by car, you can leave the buggy in the boot, and your table or compartment will have room for a baby on your lap.
Parking and arrival at Kidderminster
The Kidderminster car park uses number plate recognition and costs £4 for the day. Arrive up to 45 minutes before your departure. Kidderminster's mainline station is next door, so you can also come by train. Trains from Birmingham and Worcester stop there, which avoids parking altogether on the busiest Saturdays before Christmas.
Toilets and heating on the Severn Valley
The Santa page does not cover toilets or heating. Ask the railway about toilets on the train and at Arley, and whether carriages are heated, and use the facilities at Kidderminster before you board. With at least 2½ hours out, it is also worth asking where to find baby changing.
Tickets and group sizes
You book a whole table or compartment. Groups of 5 or 7 can add one extra person to a compartment, and a table of 3 can add one. Under 2s go free and do not count towards group size. Online booking closes at 9am the day before, and any remaining tickets are sold on the day at Kidderminster.
Santa and the show
Santa appears in the show at Arley and does not meet families individually. Prepare children who expect a grotto visit, and give names and ages for every child when booking so each gets the right present.
Accessibility at Kidderminster
Wheelchair spaces must be reserved in advance. Contact the railway to book one and to ask about access at Arley for the show. If anyone in your party has other access needs, mention them at the same time, and ask whether the relaxed dates might suit you better.
Dogs on the Severn Valley
Only assistance dogs are allowed on Santa's Steam Specials.
Steam or diesel on the Severn Valley
Steam is subject to availability, and a diesel locomotive may haul your train. Mention it to children in advance, and ask the railway on the day if you would like to know which locomotive is booked.
Booking on the day
If you decide at the last minute, remaining tickets are sold at the Kidderminster booking office on the day. On popular dates there may be nothing left, so phone or check the ticket site before you set out.
