Two of the three towns in the name of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe are in Kansas, and the railroad's oldest surviving locomotive now stands in a gallery in Topeka. This page gathers 10 train museums, depots and rides in 9 Kansas towns, from Wichita to Dodge City, and it sits inside our guide to train museums in every state. Type your town into the finder below to see what is closest.
Kansas rail history is mostly a Santa Fe story told in depots and steam engines. You can climb into locomotive cabs in Wichita on a Saturday, ride behind a Santa Fe steam engine on the official Kansas Heritage Railroad in Abilene, or walk through a Fred Harvey hotel room in Dodge City for free.
Several smaller sites, including the museums in Atchison and Newton and the Midland Railway in Baldwin City, do not post hours online. Each card below notes when you should call or message ahead before driving out.

How the Santa Fe built Kansas towns
The first train ran on Kansas soil in 1860, and the state grew up along the tracks after that. Atchison, on the Missouri River, was the starting point of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, and Topeka gave the line its middle name. As the Santa Fe pushed west, it created towns as it went: Newton was founded in 1871, the year the main line arrived from Emporia, and Dodge City had nine businesses open before the first train rolled in during September 1872.
Cattle and grain kept those trains full. From 1875 to 1885 Texas herds reached Dodge City each spring and summer, and Wichita boomed on the cattle trade and the railroad. In the east, the Leavenworth, Lawrence and Galveston laid track between Lawrence and Ottawa in 1867 and 1868, largely with Chinese workers. Along the busiest lines, Fred Harvey hotels and dining rooms set the standard for travel across the West.
Each museum here covers part of that story. The Atchison Rail Museum marks where the Santa Fe began, and the Kansas Museum of History shows its 1880 engine. The Santa Fe Depot in Dodge City covers the Harvey and cowtown years, the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum explains the cattle boom, and the Old Depot Museum tells the LL&G story. For the trains themselves, visit the Great Plains Transportation Museum or ride the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad.

Kansas train day trips
Trip 1
A Saturday in downtown Wichita
Start at the Great Plains Transportation Museum when it opens at 9 am, while it is still cool enough to climb around the outdoor yard. After lunch, walk over to the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, which opens at 1 pm on weekends, to see how the railroad and cattle trade built the city. On a Sunday the history museum is free, but the transportation museum is closed.
Trip 2
Depots of eastern Kansas
- Santa Fe Depot (Lawrence Station)Lawrence
- Midland Railway Historical AssociationBaldwin City
- Old Depot MuseumOttawa
These three stops sit within about 25 miles of each other. Look at the 1956 Santa Fe station in Lawrence, check whether the Midland Railway is running in Baldwin City, then finish at Ottawa's Old Depot Museum and its model railroad. Call ahead for Ottawa's hours and the Midland's schedule.
Trip 3
Capital and cowtown
See the 1880 Santa Fe engine in Topeka in the morning, then drive about 83 miles west to Abilene for an afternoon ride on the Flint Hills Express between May and September. Check the train schedule first so the timing works.
Holiday trains and seasonal days at Kansas museums
Fall and winter bring the most family train trips in Kansas. The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad runs the Pumpkin Harvest Express, where each child picks a pumpkin and gets a trick-or-treat bag, followed by the Cowtown Santa Express with antique coaches lit for the holidays. When the Midland Railway operates in Baldwin City, it has run Haunted Train Rides and Maple Leaf Festival trains, and the Great Plains Transportation Museum hosts Railfest every September. See our Kansas Halloween and pumpkin train guide and our list of Christmas train rides in Kansas for dates and tickets.

- The Kansas Museum of History is closed Mondays and state holidays. EBT and WIC cardholders pay $3 each through Museums for All.

- The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum has an elevator to all four floors and a family restroom on the third floor.

A note from Rally's family

When I read about kids climbing into a locomotive cab in Wichita, I think of the moment in our book when the train steps look enormous and Dad gives Rally a boost. Rally is our real corgi, and those big stairs were made for someone with longer legs. My mom dreamed up Rally's train story before she died in 2021, and now my kids are learning to read with it. If your little one is about to meet a big Santa Fe engine, print a few of our train coloring pages for the car ride, and you can read how Rally's story began.

Is the Kansas Belle Dinner Train still running?

Where is Santa Fe steam locomotive 3768?
Santa Fe 3768 is on display at the Great Plains Transportation Museum in Wichita. The big 4-8-4 came to the museum after the city sold Union Station, when the new owner donated it. In eastern Kansas, the Midland Railway in Baldwin City has run Haunted Train Rides that grow scarier on later departures, so families with small children should choose an early train.
Why was the Santa Fe Railroad important to Kansas history?
The Santa Fe created many Kansas towns and carried the cattle and grain that built them. The railroad began in Atchison and took its middle name from Topeka. Newton was founded in 1871 when the main line arrived, and Dodge City grew along the tracks as Texas herds arrived from 1875 to 1885. Fred Harvey hotels, like the one in the Dodge City depot, served its passengers.
