Huntsville's three-story brick depot, finished around 1860 for the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, is the oldest passenger depot still standing in Alabama, and Civil War prisoners' graffiti still marks its walls. It is one of 7 museums and rail sites in 6 Alabama towns on this page, part of our nationwide guide to family train museums, reaching from Scottsboro and Decatur in the north to Foley and Silverhill near the Gulf. Type your town into the finder to see which one is nearest.
Three stops let kids ride. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera is the official railroad museum of the State of Alabama, the North Alabama Railroad Museum runs its own Mercury and Chase Railroad, and Wales West Light Railway runs a Welsh-style narrow gauge steam train. In Foley, the Foley Railroad Museum adds a free ride around Heritage Park.
The depot museums keep shorter hours. Scottsboro opens on the first Saturday of each month, Decatur asks visitors to call ahead, and the Huntsville depot's indoor tours are paused, so check each card before you go.

Big engines, little legs. Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to an Alabama train museum.

Iron, cotton and the first line west of the Alleghenies
Alabama's rail story starts early. In the 1830s the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur was built through the Decatur area as the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains. By 1857 the Memphis and Charleston ran 272 miles from Stevenson to Memphis and formed part of the first continuous rail route from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. Its depots in Huntsville and Scottsboro still stand, and Scottsboro's town limits were measured from its 1861 freight depot.
Rails also fed industry and farms. In 1891 the L&N built its Alabama Mineral loop to gather raw materials for Birmingham's ironworks, and on the Gulf Coast the 1909 L&N depot in Foley was the town's link to markets for more than sixty years. In the north, the Chase Depot served both the Southern and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis, shipping nursery plants across the country.
Each museum tells part of that story. Visit the Historic Decatur Union Depot for the state's earliest railroading, the Scottsboro Depot Museum and Historic Huntsville Depot for the Memphis and Charleston and the Civil War, the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum for Birmingham's mineral railroads, the Foley Railroad Museum for a farm town built by the L&N, and the North Alabama Railroad Museum for a small union depot.

- At the North Alabama Railroad Museum, volunteers are on site Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Stay off the tracks and do not climb on equipment.
- Foley's Charles Ebert Express II rides depend on the weather and run Saturdays all year, plus Tuesdays and Thursdays in summer. Call (251) 943-1818 to confirm.

- The Historic Huntsville Depot's indoor tours are paused while the city plans the site's future, and freight still runs on the tracks beside it.
- Scottsboro opens only on the first Saturday of the month, 9 am to 3 pm, and Decatur's depot asks visitors to call (256) 341-4818 first.

Rally and Mr. Conductor

One of my favorite pages in our book is when Mr. Conductor, in his blue uniform, holds out a hand to help Rally aboard. My kids, who are learning to read, always slow down on that page. Alabama's volunteer train crews remind me of him, the people who keep old coaches rolling so children can ride. Rally is our real corgi, and my mom dreamed up his story before she died in 2021. Print our Rally coloring pages for the drive to Calera or Chase, and read how the book came to be on our story page.

When did the railroad come to Decatur, Alabama?
Decatur's railroad history goes back to the 1830s, when the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur was built through the area as the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains. Later, two major southern lines met in Decatur and shared a bridge over the Tennessee River. The 1905 Historic Decatur Union Depot tells that story today.
