Taking the kids to Rusk County Depot Museum & History Center? Bring Rally along.
In Rally Takes the Train, a corgi's little legs can't manage the big train stairs, so Dad gives him a boost. It takes about five minutes to read, a good fit for the drive to Henderson.

One railroad station that grew into a village of history
In a small East Texas town, the railroad depot was often the center of trade and travel, and in Henderson it became the center of something else: a museum. The Rusk County Depot Museum & History Center was formed in 1978 with the old railroad station and a vision, and for years the depot held the entire museum.
Over nearly five decades, the collection outgrew its first home. The grounds now hold twelve historic structures and many other pieces of Rusk County life, gathered and preserved so visitors can see how people lived in early East Texas. One of the most remarkable is the T. J. Walling log cabin, built in 1841 on land granted by the Republic of Texas and found hidden inside a larger building in 1982. The museum describes it as one of the oldest and most authentic log structures in Texas, and in recent years it welcomed R. K. Bills, a great-grandson of Thomas Jefferson Walling, to see it.
None of it would exist without the people of Rusk County. The museum says its buildings and artifacts survive because of donations and volunteer labor, and the Rusk County Historical Commission helps manage operations, fund growth and provide archives for research. The Rusk County Historical Foundation publishes the museum's website and welcomes new supporters.
From the depot to the log cabin and the syrup mill
Start at the old railroad depot, which the museum has preserved as a handsome reminder of the town's railroad era and now uses as its Children's Discovery Center, a place where kids can touch, feel and see history for themselves. From there, stroll the grounds past the historic structures, including the 1841 Walling log cabin, and look for the syrup mill that comes to life each November.
Inside the main museum, exhibits tell the stories of Rusk County's people, places and events through artifacts and everyday objects of rural life. The museum's own description sums it up well: this is a place to see and experience first-hand, not just read about. Because admission is free, it is easy to come back for a festival or a lunchtime program.

Hands-on history inside the old depot
The depot is built for kids now. As the Children's Discovery Center, it invites children to handle and explore history rather than just look at it, and families can reserve it for birthday parties. Outside, the grounds give little legs room to roam between historic buildings.
The calendar is full of family days. Touch-a-Truck in June lets kids climb around law enforcement and service vehicles, Grandparents Day is built around generations spending time together on the grounds, and second graders can attend Heritage Folk Art Day with their schools. Admission is free, so short visits with toddlers are easy.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

This museum began with one depot, and folks kept adding to it until it held a whole collection of old buildings. That reminds me of Rally packing for his trip in our book. In go his turtle toy, his green bone and his yellow ball, and he is sure he needs every one. My kids pack the same way, and I let them.
