A Victorian depot that Orange would not let fade
The Southern Pacific Railroad built this Victorian-style depot in Orange in 1902, and for decades it was a busy and necessary part of life in town. As passenger train traffic through the region declined in the middle of the twentieth century, the depot's working days came to an end.
Its second life belongs to the Friends of the Orange Depot, a nonprofit group established in 2014 to restore the century-old building. The Friends raised the money to renovate it, and the depot now stands as a proud local landmark, used both as a museum of its own history and as a venue for private events. The group regularly thanks the loyal volunteers who make events such as Depot Day possible. Regular opening hours and a detailed exhibit list are not posted online, so call before you go to arrange a visit and ask what is on display.
The restored depot on Green Avenue
The building itself is the main attraction: a Victorian-style railroad station restored by local volunteers. The Friends of the Orange Depot also share a short video on depot history on their website, a good preview before you visit. Exhibit details are not listed online, so ask when you call to schedule.

Bring Rally along: a train book for the drive

For half a century travelers came through this little Victorian depot in Orange, and somebody always had to greet them on the platform. I think about that every time we read the page where Mr. Conductor, in his blue uniform, offers his hand to Rally. It is such a small gesture, but my mom knew it was the kind of welcome a nervous first-time traveler remembers.
