The story of Christmas in Toowoomba
Lions volunteers, gold coins and a $1 million Wonderland
Toowoomba's Christmas Wonderland is run by the Lions Club of Toowoomba West in the Queens Park Botanic Gardens. A 2018 magazine piece called it a regional staple of nearly 16 years, and that December it passed $1 million raised for local groups, including Lifeline Darling Downs, the Toowoomba Hospice and the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation.
The other old favourite is the Mayoral Carols by Candlelight at Frogs Hollow in Queens Park. Council's events calendar calls it one of the oldest and largest regional carols events in Australia. In 2015 it had kids' rides from 4pm, carols at 6.30pm and fireworks to finish.
Free ice cream and 14 December carols in the 2025 season
In 2025 Christmas Wonderland ran from Saturday 6 to Wednesday 24 December, 7pm to 10pm nightly (9pm on Christmas Eve). Entry was a gold coin or tap-and-go donation, and children got free ice cream and popcorn. The organisers said the year before drew over 60,000 visitors and raised more than $85,000.
The Mayoral Carols were on Sunday 14 December at 6pm. Follow the Star, a real-life nativity with markets, ran 18 to 21 December at the Railway Goods Shed with free entry. Tony's Community Carols filled McGregor Street Oval at Wilsonton on Friday 19 December. No 2026 dates have been confirmed yet.
A sleigh parade, a 7.09pm switch-on and a tinsel trail
At a 2021 Christmas in the CBD night, Santa's sleigh led a street parade from City Hall. City Hall was lit up at 7.09pm, and the CBD Christmas tree at Grand Central was lit at 7.30pm.
Out in the region, a Christmas tinsel trail ran through Maclagan, Quinalow, Malling, Kulpi, Peranga and Oakey in 2025. Clifton held Santa in the Park at Centenary Park on Friday 12 December, and Oakey had a Santa Fair on Saturday 6 December. Millmerran lit its own tree at Domville Place on Monday 1 December.
