The story of Christmas in Springfield, MA
In Springfield, Massachusetts, Christmas is a drive through a glowing park. Since 1995 families have rolled through Forest Park to see lights, and a first night price of $6 per car is still honored once each season.
How Springfield celebrates
Springfield's best known Christmas tradition is Bright Nights at Forest Park, a three-mile drive-through light show that opened on November 24, 1995. Parks Director Patrick Sullivan got the idea from a brochure he found in February of that year, and the event is run by the nonprofit Spirit of Springfield with the city. The first night drew 1,488 cars, and the first season counted 74,859 vehicles, far more than the 40,000 expected. In 1996 fundraising began to light downtown Springfield too, including Court Square and the Memorial Bridge.
Christmas last year in Springfield
The 31st season of Bright Nights opened on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, with a countdown led by Santa at 4:45 p.m. in Santa's Magical Forest. The big new attraction was a 50-foot musical Christmas tree topped with a 4-foot star, with over 6,000 lights and about 2,000 ornaments. There was also a new cottage for sharing wishes with Santa and an augmented reality elf hat. Opening night admission was $6 per car, the same price as in 1995. The drive had over 750,000 lights and ran through January 4, 2026.
Fun facts about Christmas in Springfield
Bright Nights has welcomed over seven million visitors since 1995, and a 2003 study estimated it brought $7.3 million to the regional economy. In 2021 Governor Charlie Baker came to the opening, the first governor to do so since 1995. Springfield is also the hometown of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, and the Springfield Museums honor him each winter with holiday exhibits and a Lighting of the Quadrangle. A Seuss themed display has also been part of the drive.

Questions about Christmas in Springfield, MA
When did Bright Nights start in Springfield?
Bright Nights at Forest Park started on November 24, 1995. Parks Director Patrick Sullivan proposed it after finding a brochure for light displays in February of that year. The first season drew 74,859 vehicles, far more than the 40,000 that organizers expected, and it has returned every holiday season since.
How many lights are in Bright Nights?
Recent seasons advertise over 750,000 lights along a three-mile route. Earlier descriptions counted more than 675,000, so the show has grown over time. The display includes themed areas, a 50-foot musical tree added in 2025, and hundreds of lit pieces that families see from the car.
Who runs Bright Nights in Springfield?
The nonprofit Spirit of Springfield runs Bright Nights with the city's Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management department. They have produced it since 1995. Judith Matt, president of the Spirit of Springfield, helped design the first displays, and the city's Parks department works with the nonprofit each season.
What happened at Bright Nights last year?
The 31st season opened on November 26, 2025, with a countdown led by Santa. New that year were a 50-foot musical Christmas tree with over 6,000 lights, a cottage for sharing wishes with Santa and an augmented reality elf hat. The drive ran nightly from 5 p.m. through January 4, 2026.
Why does opening night cost only $6?
Opening night is called Roll Back Night, and it honors the $6 per car price from the first season in 1995. In 2025 regular admission was $25 per car plus a $2 fee, so the opening night price is a special throwback to how the tradition started.
How many people have visited Bright Nights?
More than seven million visitors have driven through Bright Nights since 1995, according to the organizers. The first season counted 74,859 vehicles, and the 2024 season ended with turnout nearly the same as the year before. A 2003 study estimated it brought $7.3 million to the regional economy.
Who was the first governor to attend a Bright Nights opening?
The article says Governor Charlie Baker attended the 2021 opening, the first governor to do so since Bright Nights began in 1995. Each season of the drive begins with a countdown and a lighting ceremony in the park. Our Springfield Christmas events guide on this page lists this season's opening night.
When did downtown Springfield start lighting up for Christmas?
Fundraising to light downtown Springfield's public areas began in 1996, one year after Bright Nights started. The first project outlined the Municipal Group buildings in lights for one season. Later, businesses bought displays for their own buildings, adding to lights on Main Street, Court Square and the Memorial Bridge.
What is the Lighting of the Quadrangle?
It is the Springfield Museums' winter kickoff, when the quadrangle that surrounds the museums is lit up for the holidays. The museums also host holiday exhibitions and family days. Because it is run by the museums, it has its own schedule, so see our Springfield Christmas events guide on this page for this year's date.
Is Dr. Seuss connected to Christmas in Springfield?
Yes. Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born in Springfield, and the Springfield Museums honor him each holiday season at The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum and the sculpture garden. A Seuss themed area has also appeared in the Bright Nights drive.
How can I explain a drive-through light show to my toddler?
Tell your child that Bright Nights is like a Christmas parade where the lights stay still and the family moves. The car goes slowly along a three-mile road through the park. Kids can count the glowing displays, hunt for the tall musical tree and wave to Santa at the cottage.
Why do some displays at Bright Nights change each year?
The show keeps adding new pieces. In 2019 there were 420 display pieces, and in 2025 the organizers added a 50-foot musical tree and an augmented reality elf hat for phones. Families who return each year often have a favorite scene, so spotting what is new becomes part of the fun.
Who helped start Bright Nights?
Several local people helped. Parks Director Patrick Sullivan proposed the idea in 1995, Judith Matt of the Spirit of Springfield and designer John Catenaci helped design the displays, and Peter Picknelly, chairman of Peter Pan Bus Lines, was an early investor. It grew from a new idea into a long-running local tradition.
Where can kids see a giant Christmas tree in Springfield?
The biggest tree at Bright Nights is the 50-foot musical Grand Christmas Tree in Santa's Magical Forest, new in 2025. It is topped with a 4-foot star and has over 6,000 lights and about 2,000 ornaments. See our Springfield Christmas events guide on this page to confirm this season's tree and dates.
When does Bright Nights usually run?
Bright Nights opens in late November and runs nightly into early January. In 2025 it opened on November 26, the day before Thanksgiving, and ran through January 4, 2026, from 5 p.m. each night. Check our Springfield Christmas events guide on this page for this year's schedule.
Does Santa visit Bright Nights?
Yes. In 2025 Santa led the opening night countdown, and a new cottage in Santa's Magical Forest let families share Christmas wishes with him and take photos. The cottage was one of several additions that year, along with a large musical tree and an augmented reality elf hat.
How did the first Bright Nights compare with what organizers expected?
It did far better than expected. Organizers estimated about 40,000 vehicles for the first season, but 74,859 vehicles drove through in the first season. Opening night alone drew 1,488 cars. That strong start is a big reason the drive became a yearly Springfield tradition, and it still opens each year with a lighting ceremony.
Is there a train museum near Springfield, Massachusetts?
Yes. Chester Railway Station & Museum is the closest on our list, a restored 1862 depot and National Historic Landmark with a steam engine and a 1919 caboose. It is free, but it is open summer weekends and by appointment, so call ahead before you go.

Is there a historic train station to visit in the Berkshires?
Yes. The Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum in Lenox has a restored 1903 station and diesel locomotives, all volunteer built. It also runs the Hoosac Valley Train Ride from Adams Station. Check the museum's site for trip dates and tickets before you go.
