Part of Orchard Road, from Paterson Junction at ION Orchard to Bideford Junction at Ngee Ann City, becomes a street party on Thursday 24 December. Road closures run from 6pm to 2am, and the event itself runs from 8pm to 12.15am. Benjamin Kheng and Maia Lee headline, with DJ sets, festive mascots and food trucks.
Sleigh the Street, by *SCAPE, adds street dance, graffiti art, circus performances and hands-on creative activities aimed at younger audiences. The night ends with a countdown into Christmas Day. The nearby Great Christmas Village at Ngee Ann City is open until 1am on 24 December if children want games and snowfall first.
This is a late-night event in the middle of the city, so it suits families with older children or those happy to leave early. Orchard Road is closed to vehicles during the party, and food trucks are on site.
Parent tip: Programme ends after midnight and crowds are heavy, so older children and early arrival suit best. Check road closure times for pick-up and parking.

At the heart of Season of Joy is Colours of our Wishes, where visitors pick one of seven coloured ribbons, write a wish and add it to a festive installation that fills up over the season. An eight-metre Christmas tree and holiday displays set the scene at WEAVE, with pop performances, weekend jazz, Christmas carols and balloon sculpting for children.
Families can meet Santa at the Holiday Audio Lounge in the lead-up to Christmas, and look for a towering gift-box photo spot at Grand Avenue. Spending at least S$88 in up to two same-day receipts at WEAVE earns a Gori-knot keychain. Check the resort site for Santa's exact times.
The wish installation fills up as more ribbons are added through the season, so a visit in December shows a fuller display than one in late November.

The story of Christmas in Singapore
Orchard Road has been lit up for Christmas every year since 13 December 1984, and the lights kept going through SARS, two recessions and COVID-19. For a city near the equator, Singapore takes its snowy holiday seriously.
Cold Storage shoppers and the 2,000 bulbs of 13 December 1984
Long before the official lights, Orchard Road was where Singapore did its Christmas shopping. By the 1930s, the British and other Europeans bought their Christmas goods at Cold Storage and the Orchard Road shops, and after the war the YMCA on Orchard Road kept up its carols and concerts. The official Christmas Light-Up began on 13 December 1984, with about 2,000 bulbs across Orchard Road and Scotts Road.
At home, Christmas is a public holiday on 25 December. Many Eurasian families still cook feng, a dark pork curry, from rempah recipes handed down through the generations.
Tharman's 8 November switch-on and a 14m tree with snowfall
In 2025, the light-up turned 42. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam officiated the ceremony on 8 November, and lights ran along 3.1km of Orchard Road, from Tanglin to Dhoby Ghaut, until 1 January 2026. For SG60, the wreaths and ribbon swirls came with the SG60 logo and Merli, the Merlion mascot. A 14m Christmas tree had snowfall shows at 8pm and 9pm every night, and the Christmas Eve street party filled 400m of road from ION Orchard to Ngee Ann City.
In 2026, the light-up ceremony is on 17 November, Christmas Wonderland opens at Gardens by the Bay on 27 November, and the street party returns on 24 December.
Sharity the Elephant, blue bulbs and carollers in the malls
In 1984, Tangs department store lit a 4.6m tree with over 37,000 small bulbs. The next year's theme was "Christmas at the Equator", with comets and shooting stars for Halley's Comet. In 1988 came "Christmas Sharityland", starring Sharity the Elephant, the first year the light-up raised money for people in need. Most of the lights in the 1980s were yellow, and blue ones only turned up in the late 1990s. Christmas Wonderland began in 2014, and its Spalliera is 20m tall with 103,000 bulbs. And because most families live in high-rise flats, carollers sing in malls instead of going door to door.
Traditions today
- Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up: The lights go up along Orchard Road every year, as they have since 1984. In 2026 the light-up ceremony is on 17 November at Shaw House Urban Plaza.
- The Great Christmas Eve Street Party: Orchard Road closes to cars on Christmas Eve for music, mascots and food trucks, with a midnight countdown. In 2024, close to 300,000 people came.
- Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay: Giant light displays and "snow" under the Supertrees, held since 2014.
- Eurasian Christmas food: Feng, seaweed jelly, achar, fruitcake and brueder, a dense coconut toddy cake, shared with the whole family.
- Carolling in the malls: Carolling groups sing in shopping malls and public places, since door-to-door carolling is hard in high-rise flats.
- Nativity scenes: Churches, families and some department stores set up nativity scenes. Some families only put baby Jesus in the manger on Christmas Day.
A fact for kids
Orchard Road's Christmas lights once starred an elephant called Sharity. In 1988 the whole street was "Christmas Sharityland".

Has the Orchard Road Christmas light-up ever stopped?
The light-up has kept going through hard times, including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the 2003 SARS outbreak, the 2008/09 Great Recession and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025 it marked its 42nd year, after starting with about 2,000 bulbs in 1984 and growing to 3.1km of lights.
What was Christmas like in Singapore before the Orchard Road lights?
By the 1930s, the British and other Europeans did their Christmas shopping at Cold Storage and the Orchard Road shops. After the war, the YMCA on Orchard Road held Christmas carols and concerts. Eurasian Christmas food mixes Portuguese, Dutch, Asian and English influences. The table often has feng (a pork curry), seaweed jelly, achar pickles, fruitcake and brueder, a dense coconut toddy cake. After supper, the head of the family traditionally gives a toast to the coming year, with advice and blessings.
What is feng?
Feng is a dark, dry pork offal curry that many Eurasian families in Singapore cook for Christmas. It is made with rempah, a spice paste, and each family's rempah recipe is passed down through the generations. It is one of the dishes the National Heritage Board lists in its record of Christmas in Singapore.
Why don't carollers go door to door in Singapore?
Most Singapore homes are in high-rise flats, which makes door-to-door carolling difficult. Instead, carolling groups perform in shopping malls and other public places. Some volunteer groups also visit nursing homes at Christmas to share food and music with the residents.
Where do Christmas trees in Singapore come from?
Local nurseries in Singapore import pine trees in large numbers every December to meet demand. Families decorate them with baubles, religious ornaments and fairy lights, and top them with a star or an angel. Churches, families and some department stores also set up nativity scenes beside the tree.
How do I explain Christmas in Singapore to young kids?
Tell them Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, and that in Singapore people of many faiths join in. Families share a big meal, swap presents and set up nativity scenes. Some families wait until Christmas Day to put baby Jesus in the manger, which gives little ones something to look forward to.
Does the Orchard Road Christmas light-up raise money for charity?
Yes. It first raised funds for the needy in 1988, the year of "Christmas Sharityland". Today the light-up ceremony is a fundraiser for the Community Chest, run with the Orchard Road Business Association, and it supports more than 300 social service programmes.
Who was Sharity the Elephant?
Sharity the Elephant was the star of "Christmas Sharityland", the 1988 Orchard Road light-up. President Wee Kim Wee and the First Lady officiated that year, the lights reached as far as Marina Square, and it was the first time the light-up raised money for people in need.

Does it snow at Christmas in Singapore?
No, Singapore sits near the equator, so the 1985 light-up theme was even called "Christmas at the Equator". The snow is made for fun instead. In 2025, the 14m Christmas tree on Orchard Road had snowfall shows at 8pm and 9pm, and Christmas Wonderland has its Blizzard Time.
How many people visit Orchard Road at Christmas?
Millions. Organisers expected 4 to 5 million people for the 2025 season. In 2024, the two Christmas villages drew over 1.1 million visitors combined, and close to 300,000 people came to the Christmas Eve street party. Back in 1984, the first light-up was estimated to attract 2.99 million visitors.
Besides the Orchard Road lights, what can kids do at Christmas in Singapore?
Kids can pick by mood. For bright lights, try Orchard Road or Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay.
