  • Where: Rockford Public Library, East Branch, Rockford
  • Cost: Free
  • Ages: Ages 3 to 7

On Tuesday, December 15, the Rockford Public Library's East Branch offers a holiday Evening Storytime aimed at ages 3 through 7 and their families. Santa comes by briefly to read a story, with the reading starting at 6:00 pm.

Each guest is handed a ticket at the door and has it stamped twice during the visit, one time for a craft and one time for a take-home treat bag. Craft tables open once Santa has gone and stay open until 7:00 pm sharp. The library explains that time is too short for individual visits with Santa, but he is glad to pose for a photo with anyone who asks. There is no charge. The East Branch is at 6685 East State Street in Rockford, and you can call 815-966-2748. Santa's stay is short, so arrive ahead of the 6:00 pm start to catch the reading and still have time for crafting and the treat bag.

Parent tip: You receive a ticket when you arrive, so come a little early. Photos with Santa are casual.

The story of Christmas in Rockford

Rockford's Christmas story started small. In 1989 a drive-through light show in Sinnissippi Park opened with just 11 displays, and today it has grown to more than 85, sitting alongside a downtown festival that lit the city tree in a record snowstorm last year.

How Rockford celebrates

Rockford has two big Christmas traditions. The Holiday Festival of Lights in Sinnissippi Park began in 1989, founded by Joe Marino and John Peterson of the Rockford Park District, and is a free drive-through show with music. It started with 11 displays and now has more than 85. Downtown, Stroll on State kicks off the season each year just after Thanksgiving, with a parade, the official city tree lighting, fireworks and a visit from Santa. It reached its 11th edition in 2023 and its 13th in 2025.

Christmas last year in Rockford

The 13th Stroll on State took place on Saturday, November 29, 2025, and turned out to be the snowiest in its history, with more than 10 inches falling. Organizers shortened the evening to end at 7 p.m. with fireworks, and the drone show was postponed. Even so, an estimated 15,000 people came, 1,380 ran the Dasher Dash 5K and the city tree glowed with 35,000 lights. New features included a Rockford-themed parade balloon and a quieter Sensory Santa visit at the library. The Festival of Lights ran from November 28 to December 31.

Fun facts about Christmas in Rockford
