The Holiday Cultural Festival is one of the signature evenings of Christmas at Union Station at The Durham Museum. Local cultural organizations display their crafts and traditional dress, and musicians and dancers perform throughout the evening, giving kids a lively look at how families around the world celebrate this time of year.
The festival takes place under the museum's giant holiday tree in the former Union Station waiting room. Hard-to-find foods and gifts are available for purchase. The event is included with regular museum admission, which is $10 for children ages 3 to 12 and $17 for adults, and it is free for museum members. It is a good way to show kids that winter holidays look different in other cultures, and the rest of Christmas at Union Station, including the giant tree and the sock skating pond, is part of the same visit.
Parent tip: Register or buy tickets through the museum's ticket page ahead of time; members should sign in so the free member rate applies.

Cinnamon Celebration is a hands-on Saturday class for kids at the Council Bluffs Public Library. Children shape and decorate cinnamon dough ornaments, a classic holiday craft that smells as good as it looks, and then enjoy a cinnamon treat together.
The program meets in the library's Tree House children's area from 10 to 11:30 am. It is listed for the Kids age group, and registration is required, so sign up early. Parents do not need to stay in the room during the class, but they do need to remain in the library building. The library is at 400 Willow Avenue in downtown Council Bluffs, a short drive across the river from Omaha. The finished ornaments go home with the kids, so this class doubles as a chance to make a handmade gift for grandparents or teachers before the holidays.
Parent tip: Register ahead through the library calendar. Plan to stay in the building while your child is in class.

This one-day celebration starts at 1 pm, when Santa rides his sleigh through La Vista neighborhoods. He visits areas west of 84th Street from about 1 to 3 pm and east of 84th Street from about 3 to 5 pm, and families can follow his route with an online Santa Tracker.
At 5 pm, Santa's Workshop opens at Central Park with free cookies, hot cocoa, glow items, caroling and live animals, plus lighted park decorations for photos. Santa arrives around 6 pm to light the city Christmas tree, lead a sing-along and pose for a community group selfie. The city notes there will not be individual Santa photos at this event. Both parts of the day are outdoors, so dress for the weather. Maps of the sleigh route are posted on the city's event page ahead of time, so you can figure out roughly when Santa will pass your street before heading to Central Park for the evening.
Parent tip: Be outside before Santa reaches your street, since the sleigh slows down when people are waiting. Use the Glympse app or browser tracker (search LaVistaSleighRide) to follow his route.

If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.

Are there Christmas train rides for kids in Omaha?
Yes, but they have their own guide. Santa trains and holiday train rides are listed in our Omaha Christmas train rides guide, so this page sticks to story times, Santa visits and other events off the rails.
How do you confirm these events?
We list an event only after we find this season’s date on the host’s own website or an official city or tourism calendar. We last checked every listing on November 2, 2026. Hosts change details, so always confirm on the host’s page before you go.
Event names belong to their hosts. Rally Takes the Train is a family picture book and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any host listed here. Confirm dates, times and prices on each host’s own site before you go.
