Each year the courtyard of Honolulu Hale becomes a holiday wonderland, with Christmas trees decorated by 26 City and County of Honolulu departments, many featuring handmade creations. After opening night on December 5, the City Department Tree Exhibit is open daily from 7:45 am to 10 pm, December 6 through December 30.

Outside, the large Honolulu City Lights displays, many with a Hawaii inspired theme such as Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele, offer plenty of spots for family pictures. The holiday wreath contest is on view in the Lane Gallery in the same building. Visiting is free, which makes this an easy, low key outing on a weeknight when the opening night crowds are gone.

Parent tip: Visit after dark to see the outdoor displays lit up, and bring a camera for the Shaka Santa photo spot.

Santa sets up in his Windward Wonderland at Windward Mall in Kaneohe from Saturday, November 21, through Christmas Eve. He visits on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 20, then daily from December 21 to 24. Hours are 11 am to 2:30 pm and 3:30 to 6 pm, since Santa takes a break from 2:30 to 3:30 pm to feed his reindeer.

The $30 photo package includes two 4 by 6 prints and a digital download to share or print later. The mall invites families to dress up and bring their ohana. Pet photos with Santa are offered on Sundays, November 29 and December 6, 13 and 20, for leashed or carried pets. The mall suggests coming dressed in your holiday best. Santa's last day is Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, so plan your visit before then.

Parent tip: Avoid the 2:30 to 3:30 pm break. If you want a calmer visit without pets in line, skip the Sunday pet photo days.

Windward Mall in Kaneohe welcomes Santa with a grand arrival celebration on Saturday, November 21, from 11 am to 1 pm in Center Court. The first 200 keiki receive a holiday goody bag.

The morning includes the interactive Storybook Station's Holiday Show, face painting and other activities for children. The Kaneohe Salvation Army collects canned goods at the event to help those in need, so families may want to bring a donation. Once Santa has arrived, he settles into his Windward Wonderland for photo visits through Christmas Eve. Santa's photo hours begin the same day, so families can stay for a visit with him after the arrival celebration. The celebration takes place indoors in Center Court, so it goes on regardless of the weather.

Parent tip: Arrive early if you want one of the 200 goody bags, and consider bringing a canned good for the Salvation Army collection.

The Holiday Parade, with decorated vehicles, floats and walkers, has historically started at 5:30 pm with the Royal Hawaiian Band leaving Kapolei High School and ending at Kama'aha Avenue.

This year's theme is Paniolo Nights and Holiday Lights, blending Hawai'i's paniolo heritage with holiday sparkle, slack key music and seasonal treats. A 50-foot holiday tree lights up outside the hale, and inside you will find community tree displays from City agencies and neighborhood groups. Families can spread out picnic mats in the open-air courtyard for more entertainment. The decorations stay up from November 28 through January 3. Parking and entertainment details will be announced once confirmed.

Parent tip: Bring a picnic mat for the courtyard. The City says parking details will be posted closer to the event.
