Every Saturday and Sunday from November 28 through December 20, Fort Hunter Mansion and Park shows a toy train exhibit between 12:30 and 4:30 pm. The enchanting HO gauge model trains come courtesy of the Keystone Model Railroad Historical Society.
Visitors can interact with many parts of the display, and the layout lets you circle around it. The park describes it as a not-to-miss stop for every member of the family. Each week shows a mix of vintage and newer trains, and there are fresh additions every year for those who return. Entry costs nothing thanks to the Friends of Fort Hunter, who underwrite it. Note that no rides are offered, since the exhibit consists of models only. Weekends also bring a Festival of Trees at the park, and December adds a Kids Only Holiday Shop.
Parent tip: Admission is free. The exhibit is open on weekends only.

Helper elves then wrap and tag the gifts, and children leave with presents ready for the holidays. Whitaker Center's Breakfast with Santa takes place on Saturday, December 12, from 8:30 to 11 am. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their helpers bring a morning of joy, music, and holiday cheer to the science center in downtown Harrisburg.
Tickets include a buffet style breakfast, a meet and greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a photo op and a sweet treat from Santa, cookie decorating, and a voucher for the Select Medical Digital Cinema. The center also offers discounted admission to the UPMC Science Center for the rest of the day, which currently includes the traveling exhibit Mission Aerospace, so families can stay and play after breakfast. Tickets are sold online through the Whitaker Center page, and it is wise to buy early because holiday breakfasts tend to sell out.

The Mechanicsburg Museum Association welcomes Mrs. Claus back to the historic Passenger Station for an afternoon of stories. She reads from noon to 3 pm, and there are crafts for young visitors to make during the same window.
This is a gentle, small-scale outing that suits preschool and early elementary kids who enjoy being read to. The museum suggests pairing it with the train display at its Freight Station for a full Christmas afternoon, which makes it a nice choice for train fans. Mechanicsburg is a short drive from Harrisburg. The event page does not list a price, ages or registration, and it notes that tickets are not on sale, so it appears to be a drop-in event. Contact the museum if you need to confirm details before you go.
Parent tip: Plan time to see the train display at the Freight Station after story time. The page lists no tickets for sale, so it appears to be drop-in.

A story for the drive home
A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
