Winter Wonderlights returns to the Greensboro Science Center for its seventh year, lighting up the grounds with over a million lights, handcrafted lanterns and an iconic glowing tunnel. New for 2026 is Laser Holidays, a 15 minute holiday laser show that plays throughout the evening in the OmniSphere and is included with admission.
Families with young children will like the Merry Mermaids, who close the evening with a goodnight story about a sleepy Science Center in the SAIL Center Atrium every half hour from 6 to 8:30 pm. The center's first Sensory Friendly Night, on Tuesday, November 17, offers quieter music and quiet zones. The event runs rain or shine, the path is wheelchair friendly, and discounted admission is available for members, SNAP/EBT/WIC participants buying in person on the same day, and groups of 15 or more.
Parent tip: Free on-site parking is limited; carpool on busy Friday and Saturday nights, and check the posted schedule for open dates.

Allegacy Financial's Festival of Lights is billed by Downtown Greensboro Inc as downtown's favorite holiday tradition. Families are invited to come downtown on the first Friday evening in December, enjoy the festive atmosphere and take care of some holiday shopping.
The Festival of Lights opens the Downtown in December season, which the organizers say includes a community tree lighting, live music, Santa Claus and the Winterfest ice skating rink, along with family friendly activities, dining and entertainment throughout downtown. The Holiday Parade follows the next morning. Downtown Greensboro Inc does not list a price for the festival, and food and drink vendors and performers are part of the evening, so bring a little spending money for treats. Plan for evening temperatures and crowds downtown.
Parent tip: Make a weekend of it, since the downtown Holiday Parade is the next morning.

On the day of the Downtown Greensboro Holiday Parade, the Greensboro History Museum opens its doors for a free family celebration of the winter season. Families can warm up with hot cocoa, make crafts and meet Ms. Claus and Santa, who stop by for a special visit.
The day also launches the museum's Mousetastical Adventure, a free mouse hunt that runs December 4, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Mischievous mice hide throughout the galleries, and kids who find enough of them earn a special mouse treat. The museum notes that more information about the parade day schedule will be posted closer to the date. The museum lists the parade day event as free, and the mouse hunt is free all month, so it is an easy stop for families on a budget.
Parent tip: The museum sits downtown near the parade, so it makes a good warm-up stop. Check the event page for exact times before you go.

What does Frosty the Snowman eat for breakfast? Kids can find out at the Carver School Road Branch Library this December. Children grab a clue sheet in the Children's Department and look for sweets you might eat in December, writing down the letter next to each one to spell out the answer to the joke.
Completed sheets go to the circulation desk in exchange for a sticker. The hunt is recommended for ages 5 to 10 and runs during library hours from December 1 to 23, and participation is limited to once per month per child. It is a quick, free activity that pairs well with checking out a stack of holiday picture books, and it gives early readers some gentle practice with letters and clues.
Parent tip: One entry per child per month; turn the finished sheet in at the circulation desk for a sticker.

Santa's reindeer have run away, and the Reynolda Manor Branch Library needs help getting the sleigh ready. Throughout most of December, kids can stop by the library and search for all 10 loose reindeer hidden around the building.
Children who find all 10 reindeer win a small prize. Because it runs during regular library hours from December 1 to 23, families can fit it into any library visit, pick up some holiday books at the same time, and come back on a rainy afternoon. The hunt is listed for all ages, so toddlers can tag along with older siblings. There is no set start time or registration, which makes it an easy, free outing during a busy month. Ask at the desk if your child needs a hint.
Parent tip: Drop in any time the branch is open between Dec 1 and Dec 23.

Old Salem's second Christmas Salem Saturday of the season brings St. Nick to the historic hat shop, where children can tell him what they want for Christmas and families can take a new holiday photo. The Wachovia Historical Society hosts its Moravian Market in Salem Square, with local craft vendors representing the heritage of the Wachovia region and modern day Forsyth County.
Families can also tour the historic buildings and enjoy live music, including the Costumed Moravian Brass Band and a Moravian Mass Band in the afternoon. All activities are included with Old Salem's standard admission holiday ticket, which is sold online and at the ticketing desks. The historic district is spread out and largely outdoors, so comfortable shoes and warm layers help.
Parent tip: Buy the standard holiday admission ticket online or at the ticket desk; St. Nick is in the historic hat shop.

The Central Library in downtown Winston-Salem is hosting a special Seasonal Storytime that celebrates Winter Holidays Around the World. Children will explore how different cultures mark the season through stories, crafts and hands on activities.
The storytime is presented by the library's youth team, Miss Carolyn, Miss Hannah, Miss Kirsten and Miss Madison, and takes place in the Central Library Storytime Room. It is listed for children, and the one hour morning slot fits well before lunch or a nap. This is a nice choice for families who want a holiday program that includes a range of traditions. Books and Snacks is a monthly book club for kids at the Clemmons Branch Library, and in December the theme is favorite holiday stories and books about families. Children talk about what they have been reading and leave with new recommendations from other kids, which can be a fun way to build a holiday reading list for the winter break.
The club is recommended for children and tweens ages 6 to 12, and registration is required. When registering, kids are asked to share which books they would recommend to others. Snacks are served, so families should download and complete the library's food waiver or sign one on arrival, and kids should bring their own drinks. It is a nice way to keep young readers talking about books over the break.
Parent tip: Register ahead, complete the food waiver, and send your child with a drink and a favorite holiday book to talk about.

Santa Claus is visiting the Clemmons Branch Library all the way from the North Pole for a special edition of the weekly preschool storytime. Children will enjoy stories, songs and more with a festive theme, all in the branch auditorium.
After storytime, kids are welcome to sit with Santa to have their photo taken and tell him what they want for the holidays. The program is designed for children up to 6 years old and their families, so it suits babies, toddlers and preschoolers who might find a busy mall Santa line overwhelming. No fee is listed. Bring a phone or camera for the photo, and plan to arrive a few minutes early since the special guest may draw a larger crowd than a regular storytime.
Parent tip: Bring your own camera or phone for the photo with Santa after stories.

The Clemmons Branch of the Forsyth County Public Library is celebrating all things Grinchy during the school break. Kids will hear How the Grinch Stole Christmas read aloud, then sing Grinchy songs, play Grinchy games and make Grinchy crafts in the branch auditorium.
The program is meant for children ages 11 and under and their families, and it is listed as both a storytime and a special event. The library page lists registration for this event, and online registration closes when the event starts at 10:30 am, so it is best to sign up ahead. Families who want to make a morning of it can stay at the branch for a free family showing of the 2018 animated film The Grinch, rated PG, from noon to 2 pm the same day.

Christmas in the Park is a Burlington tradition that turns City Park into a holiday playground for one evening just before Christmas. The event is completely free and includes amusement park rides, a sledding hill, hot cocoa and cookies, and a hayride through the park.
Kids can also enjoy crafts and face painting, and a few special visitors will be on hand, including one from the North Pole. The 5 to 9 pm schedule on a Tuesday during the school break makes it a nice mid week outing once the sun goes down. Dress warmly for an evening outdoors, and arrive early if your kids have their hearts set on the most popular rides, since lines may grow as the night goes on.
