The story of Christmas in Galveston
How Galveston celebrates
Galveston's signature Christmas tradition is Dickens on the Strand, a Victorian-themed festival in the historic Strand district presented by the Galveston Historical Foundation. It began in the early 1970s to celebrate the island's Victorian architecture, and it marked its 50th anniversary in 2023. Visitors wear Victorian costume, and parades, choirs and contests fill the ten blocks of the Strand. Charles Dickens never visited Galveston, but the festival honors his stories. The city also holds a Christmas Parade with Santa, and Moody Gardens turns into a holiday lights destination each winter.
Christmas last year in Galveston
Dickens on the Strand returned December 5 to 7, 2025, with admission of $25 for adults and $18 for youth, and half off for guests in Victorian costume. On Saturday there were choirs, circus performances, the Queen's Parade at 2 p.m., the Dickens Costume Contest at 3:30 p.m. and the Pickwick's Lanternlight Parade at 6:30 p.m. Sunday brought the half-mile Dickens Dash and the Victorian Bed Races. Holiday in the Gardens at Moody Gardens ran from November 22 to January 3 with a trail of more than two million lights and ICE LAND, built from about 2 million pounds of hand-carved ice.
Fun facts about Christmas in Galveston
ICE LAND is kept at around 9 degrees Fahrenheit, and the ice weighs roughly 1,000 tons. At Moody Gardens, kids under 48 inches can ride a kiddie train through part of the lights, and an Arctic Slide is for guests at least 36 inches tall. At Dickens on the Strand, the contests include the Whimsical Whisker Revue and Victorian Bed Races, and a kids' scavenger hunt in 2023 asked families to find six illustrated chickens. Some families have entered the costume contest for generations.
Trains and Christmas in Galveston
The best-known train at a Galveston Christmas is a small one. At Holiday in the Gardens, Moody Gardens runs a kiddie train through part of the lights trail, and riders must be under 48 inches tall. It is a gentle ride for toddlers and preschoolers who might find the cold ICE LAND too chilly. We did not find a Galveston rail museum with a Christmas program this session.
