West Acres mall in Fargo hosts Photos with Santa from November 14 through December 24. The setup is called Santa's Whimsical Wonderland and is located next to Best Buy. This year there are two settings: sit with Santa on his big green chair in front of Santa's house, or choose Santa's sleigh, photographed from an elevated position.
A reservation is highly recommended and is booked online through the mall's partner site, but it only holds your place in line and not an exact time. The page notes that an appointment is not required, and that a photo purchase is required to visit Santa. Hours change by day, with longer days on weekends and the final days before Christmas. Check the hours list on the event page for the date you want to visit.
Parent tip: Book a spot in line online if you can. Hours vary by day, and Christmas Eve hours are shorter.

Window Wonderland returns to Downtown Fargo from Friday, November 20 through Saturday, December 5. Local businesses turn their storefronts into festive holiday displays, and visitors are invited to bundle up, grab something warm to sip and stroll downtown to take it all in.
The event page lists a voting component that runs for the same dates, so families can pick a favorite window as they walk. It is free to stroll, and the dates run right up to the Xcel Energy Holiday Lights Parade on Saturday, December 5, which is a natural way to combine two downtown outings. Details about the display locations were still being added when the page was checked, so look at the Downtown Community Partnership site for the latest map.

Santa stops by West Acres mall in Fargo to read some of his favorite stories on two mornings, Saturday, November 28 and Friday, December 18. The fun kicks off at 9:30 a.m. in the mall's Aquarium Court.
After the stories, children can join a craft activity. The event page lists it as Stories with Santa and describes it as a story time with Santa followed by a craft, with no ticket price shown. West Acres is an indoor shopping center, so the program works well on cold North Dakota mornings. Families can combine it with the mall's separate Photos with Santa experience, which has its own reservation system and a photo purchase requirement. The mall is on 13th Avenue South in south Fargo, with plenty of indoor space to warm up before or after the program.
Parent tip: No price was listed on the event page. Photos with Santa are a separate experience.

West Acres mall in Fargo hosts a lineup of holiday performances by local groups and musicians in its Fountain Court from November 30 through December 11. The event page posts the full schedule by day and time so families can plan a visit around a favorite group.
The lineup includes children's and school groups such as elementary and middle school choirs, a children's choir from Enderlin, orchestras, hand chimes ensembles, dance studios, and the Fraser Child Care Center. Most performances are short, so families can drop in for a set, shop, and come back for another. Some acts fall in the daytime on school days and others in the early evening. Because the mall is indoors, it is a comfortable option on cold days. The page does not list a ticket price.
Parent tip: Check the day-by-day lineup on the event page. Children's choirs and school groups perform on several days.

Expect dozens of entries decked out with lights and music, including floats, marching units and equestrian entries, as the community celebrates the start of the holiday season together. The Fargo Public Library teams up with F-M Ballet and Gasper's School of Dance for a Nutcracker preview on Wednesday, December 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Main Library.
The event is part of the library's Libraries Dance series of themed storytimes followed by short dance lessons. Children hear stories tied to the theme and then get up and move with local dance teachers. The series is geared toward children ages 3 and up, and the library lists it as a free family storytime with no registration required. It is a gentle way to introduce kids to the Nutcracker story and ballet movement before any holiday performances, and families can drop in without signing up. The event is held at the Main Library, 101 4th Street North in downtown Fargo, in the evening after most school and work days.
Parent tip: No registration is needed. Wear comfortable clothes your child can move in.

The Fargo Main Library marks the Icelandic custom of Jólabókaflód, known as the Christmas Book Flood, Saturday, December 12, from 2 until 3 p.m. In Iceland, people give each other books on Christmas Eve and then read through the night, and this party shares a bit of that custom with Fargo.
Bring a book to trade at the swap, make crafts with an Icelandic flavor, have snacks, and hear Scandinavian tunes played by Project Constellation. The library describes a warm, festive afternoon for every age, and you do not need to register. With books at the center of the swap, it is a nice way for children to choose something fresh for winter break reading. The party is in the downtown Main Library, within walking distance of numerous Fargo shops and restaurants if you would like to stretch the afternoon.
Parent tip: Bring a book to trade if you can. Registration is not needed.

While the reindeer get some rest before the big night at the North Pole, Santa travels to Fargo in a helicopter landing at the Fargo Air Museum, Saturday, December 12. Doors swing wide at 9:30 a.m., with Santa expected around 10 a.m., though the museum can't rule out flight delays.
Children can pose for a picture with Santa and tell the elves in his workshop what they hope to find under the tree. You do not need to register in advance. Regular museum admission applies, and members get in free. Adults pay $15; students, military, veterans and seniors pay $12; children 5 to 11 pay $10; children 4 and younger enter free. Take time to look at the museum's aircraft displays while you are there.
Parent tip: Santa's landing time hinges on flying weather, so be there when the doors open. Pre-registration is not needed.

If your child loves the idea of hearing reindeer land on the roof this season, come to the Fargo Public Library's Reindeer Storytime on Wednesday, December 16, 10 to 11 a.m. in the Main Library.
After the stories comes a game about reindeer, more activities and a craft. It is meant for 2 to 6 year olds, and the library tags it with the categories early literacy, storytime and craft, and registration is not required. Preschoolers who enjoy moving around and bringing home something they made will like it. Additional storytimes run through the week, so you can pair this one with borrowing books. The Main Library is at 101 4th Street North in downtown Fargo.

Kids do not have to stay up until midnight to celebrate the new year at the Fargo Main Library. On Thursday, December 31, from 11 a.m. to noon, families are invited to ring in the Noon Year with Elephant and Piggie, the favorite pair from Mo Willems' picture books.
The library describes the event as a morning of silly fun, friendship and festivities for the whole family. It is listed as a family event with no registration required. Because it falls on the last day of the year, it is a handy after-Christmas activity for children who are home on winter break and ready for one more party. Families who know the Elephant and Piggie books may enjoy dressing up as their favorite character.
