The story of Christmas in Dumaguete
Carnival rides at Freedom Park, 12-foot spiral tree
Dumaguete's oldest documented Christmas event is the Freedom Park carnival of the 2012 season, part of the province's Pasko sa Kapitolyo program. Entry was free, rides were cut to PHP 30, and the carnival ran daily from 5 p.m. to midnight until January 6, 2013. A 12-foot spiral tree stood at the center, with 5-foot candy canes along the path, a carousel, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars and food stalls. By 2018 Pasko sa Kapitolyo had grown into booths where towns across Negros Oriental showed how they celebrate, timed to follow the province's October Buglasan Festival.
A pyro-musical switch-on and a Pampanga lantern
The latest full Capitol switch-on on record was on December 10, 2023. Lanterns and installations were lit at the Provincial Capitol and Freedom Park, opening Pasko sa Sidlakan Negros. Peacock and angel figures glowed in white, yellow and blue lights, a four-tiered tree stood on the fountain, and a pyro-musical show followed. The giant lantern beside the Negros Oriental sign came from Pampanga. The Capitol roof carried a large Malipayong Pasko sign and a life-size nativity replica sat on the staircase landing. On November 14, 2024, Filinvest Malls Dumaguete held its first tree lighting on Central Plaza.
Whale shark lanterns and a Gentle People city
In December 2018 the city tourism office planned a concert called Kumukutitap sa Dumaguete for December 9 at 7 p.m. on the city hall quadrangle, with National Artist Ryan Cayabyab. Lanterns shaped like a whale shark, a green sea turtle and a Philippine spotted deer were to be lit the same night, and a giant tree was planned for Quezon Park. Dumaguete calls itself the City of Gentle People. Its Rizal Boulevard runs along the sea, and Sandurot Festival fills Quezon Park each September. Freedom Park is the province's Kilometer Zero point.
