Santa has asked the Main Library downtown to help collect letters before Christmas. Children bring a letter, drop it into the special mailbox at the library and make sure to include their name and mailing address so Santa can send a reply. No postage is needed.

The mailbox is available during library open hours on the calendar dates from November 28 through December 11, so families can work it into any visit to the library. The program is open to families with children from birth to age 18,. Letters need to be dropped off by December 11, the last day the mailbox appears on the calendar, so there is time for Santa's reply to arrive. The Central and Unser Library also had a Santa mailbox on November 28.

Parent tip: Write the letter at home and include your child's full name and mailing address so Santa can reply. Mail it by December 11.

The drop-in style craft runs from 3 to 5 pm on Friday, December 4, in the Cherry Hills children's room. It is listed for all ages, and no registration is listed, so it works as an easy after-school stop. The Cherry Hills Library is in northeast Albuquerque on Barstow Street. Gingerbread Extravaganza is a weeknight holiday gathering at the Central & Unser Library on Albuquerque's west side. Younger children ages 3 to 6 decorate gingerbread people, while kids and teens ages 7 to 17 build and decorate gingerbread houses with icing and candy.

The event runs from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, December 9, which makes it easy to attend after school or work. Materials are offered while supplies last, so earlier arrival is a good idea, especially for the gingerbread houses. The Central and Unser Library sits at the corner of Central Avenue and Unser Boulevard on the west side. Kids take their finished gingerbread creations home, so bring a box or bag to carry them safely. The split by age means both preschoolers and older siblings get a project at the right level.

Parent tip: Supplies are limited, so arrive closer to 5 pm for the best chance at a gingerbread house kit.

Lomas Tramway Library on Albuquerque's east side hosts Fun with Santa on Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm in the branch meeting room. The library lists it as an all-ages special event with arts and crafts for children.

Families are invited to take pictures with Santa, and children can tell him what they would like for Christmas. Afterward, kids make ornaments to take home and decorate their tree. The two-hour window means families can come when it suits them rather than rushing for a single start time, and the library setting is usually calmer than a shopping center Santa line. It is a good choice for families in the foothills and east mountain areas who want an easy Saturday morning holiday outing, and a stop in the children's section for winter picture books fits neatly into the visit.

This after-school STEAM session at the Main Library downtown invites kids to make a whimsical melted snowman ornament. The project takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and children can work at their own pace, so families can stop by any time during the hour.

The drop-in runs from 4 to 5 pm on Thursday, December 17. It is designed for ages 6 to 17, and adults are welcome to craft alongside them. No registration is required, and the finished ornament makes an easy handmade gift or tree decoration. The Main Library is at Fifth Street and Copper Avenue in downtown Albuquerque. Because it is a quick drop-in craft, it fits easily into an after-school library stop, and kids leave with a finished ornament for the tree or to give as a small handmade gift. Adults are welcome to join in and make one too.

Parent tip: Plan on 15 to 20 minutes for the craft; arrive any time before 5 pm.

Craft and Watch pairs a holiday movie with a hands-on project. At the Lomas Tramway Library, families watch The Grinch and make a Whoville-style ornament while the film plays, so restless kids have something to do with their hands.

The program runs from 2 to 4:30 pm on Saturday, December 19, in the library's meeting room. It is listed for all ages and children, and no registration is listed, which makes it a relaxed option for the last weekend before Christmas. The Lomas Tramway Library is near the foothills on the northeast side of Albuquerque. Kids leave with a handmade ornament, so the afternoon ends with a small keepsake as well as a movie. Since the program runs about two and a half hours, families can settle in for the whole film or come for part of it.

The screening runs from 3 to 5 pm on Saturday, December 19, in the library's community meeting room. The film is rated G and the program is listed for all ages, and no registration is listed. It is a gentle introduction to A Christmas Carol for younger kids. The International District Library is on Central Avenue NE, east of Nob Hill. A story for the drive home

A morning with Santa or an evening of holiday stories tends to end the same way: tired kids, a long drive and one more book before bed. Our picture book follows Rally the corgi on his first train ride to see his grand-paw-rents, and every page is painted by hand. If your family is spending December missing someone, it was written for that too. For the car, print our free corgi and train coloring pages.
